Mrs. Kitten's Picture
Mrs. Kitten, Austin/Grand Cayman Age and Occupation: 25, Law Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 27, Dental Student Engagement Date: October 19, 2006 Wedding Date: April, 2009 Venue: The Grand Old House, Grand Cayman About Me: In 2009 I will get married (after a two and a half year engagement!), become an Army wife, graduate from law school, take the bar, move from Austin to Washington, D.C., and start my career as a lawyer! With all this going on, Mr. Kitten and I decided to have a tropical, "stress-free" destination wedding. Nevertheless, my micromanaging, detail-oriented, perfectionist side has prevailed---I am currently obsessed with every last detail of my "stress-free" destination wedding! But most of all, I'm beyond excited to become Mrs. Kitten on a fabulous Caribbean vacation surrounded by my friends and family!

Our Wedding Movie: Take 1 : wedding videography Couple Peir couple-peir

When I started planning our wedding, I never thought I would hire a wedding videographer. The wedding videos I had seen up to that point were, let’s face it, pretty darn boring. Sure, it’s great to record the day for posterity, but most wedding videos aren’t exactly something that a couple will pull off the shelf and watch very often. Most of my married friends didn’t hire a videographer for this very reason. Not only that, but videographers aren’t exactly cheap; in fact, they can be a huge expense! At the very most, I was gravitating to delegating wedding videography to a friend or family member, who would use a handheld camera–something other Bees, like Miss Piglet, have talked about doing as well.

But after becoming a Weddingbee reader, I was introduced to a totally different type of wedding “videos”. Wedding cinematography, as opposed to just traditional videography, is truly an art form. And the inspiring images from my two favorites–

StillMotion

and Joe Simon

Keely & Kyle HD Highlights Montage from Joe Simon Productions on Vimeo.

–that I found on Weddingbee made me realize that I still didn’t want a wedding video–I wanted a wedding MOVIE! Something documentary style and heavily edited to create a cinematic piece so touching it gives you goosebumps–something we would want to watch over and over again!

Unfortunately, as you can imagine, hiring a wedding cinematographer isn’t cheap. Aside from paying the cinematographer(s) (or wedding filmmakers as they are sometimes called) for filming the wedding, plus the overhead cost of their fancy cameras and equipment, you are paying for an extensive editing process–a process that can take months to complete! I decided that we would go big or go home–either have a wedding movie from one of my favorite wedding filmmakers, or have a friend or family member do it. All I knew for sure was that I was not going to pay an arm and a leg for something I liked, or that was just okay. After all, we had already plunked down a substantial sum to hire a talented photography team, who skillfully document every aspect of the weddings they cover.

Having a wedding film isn’t on the top of everyone’s list. Where does it fall amongst your wedding priorities? If your fairy godmother appeared and offered you the choice of:

  1. A wedding meal catered by Emeril/Wolfgang Puck/(insert celebrity chef name here), or
  2. A wedding film like the ones posted above

Which one would you choose?

If I had a fairy godmother, I’d choose the wedding film. But since I don’t, I choose my cousin filming on the little camera that we are going to buy for the wedding.

I would take the wedding film for sure!! And I’m a HUGE foodie so that’s saying a lot! lol

I’ve given a lot of thought to this topic. I’ve contacted Patrick at StillMotion and have been in discussions with him about shooting our 2010 wedding in Tulum.

At first I was hesitant because of the cost. It’s a lot of money - especially since I was hoping to keep costs low by having a DW in the first place. But ultimately the finished product speaks for itself. They are AMAZING!!

And as I like to say - there are no do-overs! :) I’ll only have that one day and I want the film to remember it by.

When I get back from my site visit in June, I’ll contact StillMotion and book them for the wedding. I anticipate it’s a decision I won’t regret!!!

***AH! sucha great picture!

I’m in the process of waiting for our wedding MOVIE! so seeing yours will help ease the pain ;) I definitely do not regret our decision to get a wedding movie made… our team was great: simply cinematic in orlando, fl. and they did an awesome job.

that being said, we budgeted for things that would last us longer, ie: photography and videography. you’d be surprised at how many times you’ll watch it. You may not now, but in the future, when you have kids, you will.

Def #2, as Peep said it lasts much longer. But since there is no fairy godmother as of yet, I plan to have my uncle who always has his video camera do the honors for us

I tortured myself for weeks over the decision to hire a videographer. At first I thought I would go with a ‘budget’ one, but then I realized that, just like photography, these should be timeless works of art and that was important to me. I guess it’s all relative depending on your priorities. I think you either go for a grand production by a serious professional, or an emotion-provoking and raw clip filmed by a guest. Both are incredible.

(Oh, and in the end I splurged and booked our dream videographer - he did Mrs. Apple and Mrs. Hydrangea’s weddings)

OMG I was totally crying at my desk at work. haha. Wow. I’m in LOVE. I already can’t wait to be married and this just makes it more intense. Before watching them I would’ve picked #1, but after… definitely #2.

Definitely the film! I want one so bad, but I’m not sure if I can justify the expense.

Everyone I know that’s had a wedding video, even a cheesy one, says they watch it. Some of them never even bought a wedding album.

I’m debating between a splurge on photographer or cinematographer. I’ve been really fascinated with photography ever since reading Camera Lucida, but I definitely see the value of a great video. I think in our Flickr age photography is a pretty good value, but there’s just something about film. Tough call!

The movie! No question! Food can be good enough created by anybody. But a movie lasts more than ten minutes - it lasts a lifetime!!
