Something Old

April 22nd, 2009 @ 5:19 pm by Mrs. Mascara

Every bride knows the little rhyme that tells them what they must carry with them on their wedding day. I thought I’d share one of my wedding day items with you all and the story behind it.

One of the first (of many) photos I had clipped out of a wedding magazine was this bouquet from Modern Bride.
Something Old : wedding flowers jewelry Modern

I fell in love with the cameo that the bride had attached to her bouquet, in honor of her late grandmother.

My lovely future-mother-in-law must have seen this picture in my wedding binder, because a few months ago she gave me this beautiful cameo and told me that I could attach it to my bouquet just like I’d seen in my inspiration photo.

She told me that she wore this on her wedding day, which made it even more special to me. And I’m honored to be carrying it with me down the aisle as my “something old”.

What are you using as your “something old”?

Oh, how lovely! I just LOVE cameos, and am hoping to pin one that my mom gave to me to my bouquet on my wedding. What a sweet thing for your Future MIL to do!

I am thinking along the same lines! I asked my mother if she has any heirloom pieces of jewelry I use as a “something old” and “something borrowed”, but alas, after an extremely long discussion/debate with my mother (who admitted that she did not keep any heirloom jewlery from her mother or grandmother) we decided to pin a brooch that she owns to my bouquet. And the brooch is more than 1 year old, so that technically qualifies as old. :)

I wore my grandmother’s veil - which was made for her by her mother from lace that HER mother brought over to America with her family from Ireland!

That’s so sweet that your FMIL is helping your cameo vision become a reality! :-)

That is SOOO sweet of your MIL.

My old - my mom is giving me her ring bearer pillow and veil from her wedding. I’m using the fabric to make a clutch.

How nice of her! I love it :)

My mom is suprising me with my “something old”. I know it will make me cry…so I may have her give it to me before the day of the wedding! :)

Oh I love that!!! I wish that I had something old! Sad to say that my family doesnt not have something that has been passed down generations or anything like that. I guess I have to really figure out what that will be. The only thing that I have is my something new

That is so sweet! I loooooooove cameos. For my something old, my mom cut the lace off of the train of her wedding dress (that I LOVED as a little girl) and we’re using it as my bouquet wrap. But I am loving Lara Bee’s idea of making a clutch!! How creative..hmmm

Please, please, please, PLEASE be careful with your bouquet!!! It’s amazing how bouquets go missing at weddings. (I have no idea what happened to mine). It is so sad to lose a sentimental piece that way - and it really does happen. I carried a family heirloom down the aisle, and passed it back to my dad when he hugged me, who gave it to my mom to put in her purse. I suggest doing something similar with the cameo - take it off your bouquet immediately after the ceremony and get it into a purse of someone you trust! Then you can relax for the rest of the night.

That’s really special your future in-laws are providing your something old. What a nice way to be officially welcomed into the new family! I want to find something old from my grandmother. I might wear her wedding set, which I actually wore as an “engagement ring” before FI got me my own.

I have been racking my brain for my “Something Old” and have yet to come up with something between me and my mother. She does not have much jewelry that I would want to wear, and she does not have much from my Grandma….so the brainstorming continues!

I’m going to wear the pearls that my father gave to my mother as a wedding present. My mother passed away when I was 10, and her necklace will be a way to have her with me, as well as fulfilling the “something old” requirement.

We choose the color amethyst for our wedding day colors to honor my grandmother who loved purple and amethyst jewelry. I will be using her amethyst rosary beads for something old and I am borrowing my grandmothers 7 karat amethyst ring from my mom. It almost makes me feel as if she is there with me.
