Birds of a Feather

April 24th, 2009 @ 1:22 pm by Mrs. Bruschetta

In order to find the perfect decoration for our cake, I learned all about the birds and the bees.

Mrs. Canary found Lauren Alane through Etsy, and together, they created a duo that captured the couple’s “nerdy” and “music-loving” personalities.

Mrs. Coconut featured the coveted, and always stylish, Ann Wood birds.

Mrs. Gummi Bear had a whole flock — 20 (!!!) of Ann Wood creations, plus one of her custom cake topper couples!

Mrs. Lovebug commissioned her custom birdies from Carrin of Rain’s End.

Mrs. Peacock’s aunt crafted her cake toppers from alpaca wool donated from another relative’s farm.

Mrs. Penguin’s birds were handmade by her friend, Jenny Louwheeeeze.

Clearly, fowl play (::wink wink::) is popular. And while I’m usually one to strive for uniqueness, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to have me and the mister represented in fine feathered figurine form.

A quick search of Etsy — where else? — led me to Le Petit Oiseau, Sue Bennett’s birdie bridal boutique. Her endearing creations can be customized to meet your color, style and trim specifications.

After a brief email chat — Sue’s daughter is getting married in September, so we discussed our ongoing searches for the perfect wedding shoes — we decided to work together to design the Bruschetta birdies that’ll top our triple-tiered confection. I love that, while I’m certainly embracing a trend, our cake toppers will be totally original, and reflective of us and our wedding day attire!

We also have custom bird toppers.
We found Red Light Studios on Etsy and she created 2 custom birdies for us.
The groom is wearing dark grey with a skinny blue tie and she painted a flower on my bride birdie. :)
I adore them…

Emilydll, your pic didn’t work:(

We got ours from Etsy too, but went against the grain and didn’t get birds — here’s an example of what we got!

Wait… please tell me the Ann Wood birds used to be less expensive? Because.. did Miss Gummie Bear really spend $6000 to outfit her cake? I don’t mean to be snarkey…it’s more—wow girl… how fun would that size budget be?!!!

I LOVE the birds cake topper! I really like the cake topper I found on etsy named HaveandHold because they used real feathers rather tan fabric. We are going to create ones ourselves from store-bought birdies! Save the cake-topper expense from the budget.

Ooh, I didn’t know those were for Mrs. Canary - I love Lauren Alane!

Unfortunately, birdies weren’t in our budget :( And Mr. S (and, like, everyone else I showed them to), didn’t “get” the birds. What’s to get?! Hee. I love my topper more than anything, but the birds still get me ;)

We both play Rock Band fairly often with our friends and the site offers the ability to get a figurine of your custom character. Here’s my fiance’s:

I got it for him as a Christmas gift and we’ve now realized how well they’d work as cake toppers.

If you play Rock Band and want to make your own figurine, the website is here: http://www.rockband.com/merch

I am completely excited about our cake topper - it will be a clay mini version of us on our wedding day!! Being made from Etsy’s very talented Nicole W Clark. You can check her out at http://www.nicolewclark.com. She was the first “big” purchase for the wedding and I think its one of the things I’m most excited about seeing on our wedding day!

I purchased bird cake toppers from Sue Bennett too - and she is AWESOME! I asked her to add a pair of glasses on the groom bird and after seeing a pic of my fiance - they look perfect!

I am so happy I purchased frmo her. No offense to Ann Wood or Lauren Alane birds but Sue Bennett’s birds were in stock, more reasonably priced, and personalized. Could not reccomend her more!

We are also using birds in our wedding. I am wanting to incorporate them elsewhere as well, so Mrs. Gummibear, or anyone else, if you have some you want to sell, please “pm” me! Thanks. :)
Very cute!
