DIY Custom Wedding Album Design

April 24th, 2009 @ 8:33 am by Mrs. Ant

Hello hive! You’re probably wondering why an ’06 bride is posting again on Weddingbee. I wish it were because I’m planning a spectacular vow-renewal extravaganza. How exciting would that be? But… no such luck.

I’m simply posting again to address a defunct slideshow of my DIY wedding album design that has been down for years. Brides have been regularly emailing me for a working link to view the album spreads, but I had no idea because I no longer check my weddingbee email… *sheepish face*

To all the readers I inadvertently ignored: Thanks for your interest! I hope you find this new slideshow to be helpful. Best of luck on your album designs. happy01

Photography by: Tony Yang
Album design by: Mrs. Ant (yours truly)
Software: Adobe InDesign

Getting Ready & Portraits: Start ~ 1:40
Ceremony: 1:40 ~ 2:40
Reception & Dancing: 2:40 ~ End

Hopefully, Vimeo will stick around longer than the other 3rd party hosting service I used and the slideshow will be permanently taken care of.

Mrs. Ant’s Album Design Series [circa 2007]

Finally, I was hoping to get some recommendations for a good print-on-demand photobook company. I’m designing a wedding album as a gift for one of my best friends who got married in India. Gotta put those well-earned Adobe InDesign skills to use, right?

Before I can start, I need to determine what company to print with so I can set the proper dimensions and color space. In a fantasy world, I’d love to present her with an album from Vision Art Book (drooool), but it’s way out of my budget. I’ll probably have to turn to lower quality but more budget-friendly companies instead (e.g. MyPublisher and Blurb). Unfortunately, I’ve been out of the whole photobook and wedding scene for so long that I’m no longer familiar with the market landscape…

What are the best budget-friendly print-on-demand photobooks out on the market?

Thanks for your help! blush01

Mrs. Ant! Thanks for sharing. That slideshow was great!

I’m so impressed with yoru design…I can’t imagine I’ll ever have time to design something that perfect (using blurb or shutterfly is just so much easier!)

Have you looked into mpix.com? They make album books too and are a professional printing company. They are reasonable. :)

I’ve also heard that mpix.com has great quality for a reasonable price. I’m planning on using them, but haven’t ordered anything yet.

I absoloutely love your slideshow!!! I am sorry I don’t have any suggestions for what you’re looking for but you have have actually given me the best idea for our first song! The second song in your slide show is sung by one of our favorite Colombian singers, the words are beautiful and we are having our wedding in Colombia! I dont know why I didn’t think of that song before.
Thank you so much for the inspiration!

Shutterfly and MyPublisher are budget friendly and produce good quality photobooks in my opinion. I’ve used them both and was always pleased with the results.

Aww. You girls are too kind. :-)

Thanks for the recommendations for MPix and Blurb. I’ve used Mpix before for photos but I had no idea they also offered photobooks.

I’ve ordered photobooks from MyPublisher before. How would you compare the quality of Mpix or Blurb with MyPublisher? I also see that Blurb offers “premium paper” now… Is it a lot nicer than their standard paper?

All these choices make the decision so confusing!

I ordered a “suede hardcover book” as my guest book from Mpix. I used their standard text stock and while I thought the quality of the book was great, the paper was a little too thin for me.

Mpix also offers “assembled albums”, which are similar to flush mount albums, but they have a 1/16″ black border around each page. I haven’t tried these yet, but plan to for our parents books and possibly our own album.

I’d also definitely recommend mpix! I recently posted about our good experience with them: http://www.weddingbee.com/2009/03/25/get-an-album/

I’ve used blurb in the past and thought the quality was just ok, and the colors a little off. Hope that helps! Your slideshow was beautiful, it was so fun to see your wedding pics again!

I ordered a photobook from Mpix a year ago and was unhappy with the results. I had crisp, hi-resolution photos, but in the photobook, the picture quality was poor due to graininess. Mpix told me that the photos print out that way in their photobooks because of the different processing compared to prints. I ended up returning the photobook for a refund and ordering prints to put in a Kolo album myself. I don’t know about the other companies since I never used them.

Mrs. Ant - you were the only actual bride that came up when I googled the Designer of a wedding dress I saw in a magazine. I ended up buying a Le spose di Gio too - in part because of your beautiful pictures. I didn’t get the same style though, mine is style 14 on their website. Thanks!

I totally LOLed when the music turned to “Party Like a Rockstar!” Love your album and may have to steal some of the layouts so I can motivate myself to make an awesome album (planning to DIY if I find a good program).

Yay! You’re back! I really liked how my Blurb guestbook turned out. I used the more expensive paper, and the wrap-around cover, and it was just lovely.

Your album series was very informative and helpful– thanks for taking the time to do all that! I’ve used MyPublisher before for vacation books, but I’m going to give Blurb or Mpiz a try for our guestbook and parent albums. Sorry I don’t have any advice!

Oh, and on another note, you’re absolutely gorgeous and your wedding looks like it was a blast!

I used SharedInk for my college-years scrapbook, and plan to use them again for my wedding album. They have a “photographers” program that anyone can join, which gives you Photoshop templates and more choices for book size and covers.

i used mypublisher for my parents albums and was very happy with the results. 99% of the photos printed clearly and crisply, the way i would’ve expected them to. only 1 photo was a bit off and i think its b/c my photographer edited the pic a bit too red. the jacket cover is vivid and stunning (the glossy dust jacket i think its called?).

of course it cannot compare to the professional album we got from our photographer which has a very nice binding, super thick paper and has great quality…but for something that i made, and was relatively cheap, and was buy 1 get 1 free,i was very satisfied with MP.
