Our Complicated Ring Search

April 25th, 2009 @ 1:15 pm by Mrs. Taffy

Like many brides to be, I have had a really difficult time finding a wedding band. To be honest, we didn’t think about the wedding band while designing my engagement ring. I wanted a really low setting, but didn’t think about how that would affect a wedding band from fitting next to it. Here are some images of my engagement ring:

I originally wanted a very thin, simple white gold band.
But because my setting was so low, any rings that I tried on did not sit nicely next to it. Mr. Taffy and I went to Austin & Warburton, the jeweler that made my engagement ring. They were a dream to work with- they made my ring in around nine days from Mr. Taffy’s sketch to the actual delivery- and we were thrilled to go back for our wedding bands.

Taking my concerns into consideration, they gave us a proposal for a custom ring that would sit up against my e ring. It would have to be like a horseshoe, and would have to be joined permanently to my engagement ring. Mr. Taffy used the picture above to do a rendering of their proposal at home. He made the wedding band brighter so I could point it out easily when I showed it to my friends & family.

I love the way that it looks, but had some concerns. I didn’t like the idea of having to use a horseshoe shaped ring for the ceremony, since I like the symbolism of a whole ring that has no beginning or end. I also love my engagement ring as is, and was worried about joining it permanently with the wedding band. We took a few weeks to think about it, since I was so commitment shy.

Before we had a chance to get back to the jeweler, our friend called us with some bad news. They had also gone to Austin & Warburton for their engagement ring, and had just received a notice in the mail that they were going out of business!!! We were really surprised, and had not received anything regarding the situation. We later realized that our notice had been sent to Mr. Taffy’s old address and was not forwarded.

Just what every bride wants to see…

It took more than a week to find out what was going on- they were having private sales during their normal store hours. It was a confusing and frustrating week, especially since another vendor dropped us at the same time! More on that later. ;) Finally, we learned that the store is closing on our wedding day. What are the chances!?

We also found out that the crazy going out of business sale would not apply to our wedding bands.

Stay tuned for the outcome of our situation…

Did one of your vendors go out of business before your wedding?

I have the same problem as you, Taffy. My ring is in a very low setting. But I don’t want to have my wedding band fused to my engagement ring. I’d like to be able to wear them separately.

I can’t wait to see what you chose!

Sorry to hear about your frustrating ring situation! But, looking forward to hearing about your wedding ring, and how you and Mr. Taffy are resolving the situation.

We benefited from a going out of business sale for my band, but I feel so bad about yours :(

None of my vendors went out of business, but I did have a similar problem finding a wedding band to fit my e-ring. Like yours, it has a lower setting so there was no way that a band would lay flush. I hated that all the pretty rings I tried on looked so awkward next to my band.

So we went back to the jeweler who made my ring and he suggested the same thing that was suggested to you: a scalloped setting so the rings would be flush. I got the finished result and they look very pretty together. However, my desire for a normal band is still pretty strong. So my FH promised that for our one year anniversary, I could get a normal band to wear during the times I’m not wearing the e/wedding ring combo. I think this is a nice compromise and it’s worked out well so far. :)

The main contact at our venue quit and no one told us. She also didn’t tell the person who took over for her that she’d promised me aon site place to get ready with my maids and thus we were not told that the room lost heat and was having work done on it. Luckily my month of coordinator (the fab Mrs. Emerald) helped resolve the issue!

I’m sure you’ve already found a solution, but just in case, here’s mine!

The diamond fidelity ring from Kwiat:

My low setting snuggles right up to it!

Yikes! That’s something I do worry about … since we bought the lifetime protection for the band - replating the white gold, cleaning, repairs, etc. So far, we’re good there, BUT our catering manager was FIRED and is being investigated for embezlement. About a month after we found that out, we learned that the operations manager - the guy who is actually on site and who previous brides have raved about - is going to have to travel out of town for his best friend’s wedding the same day. Oh brother!

Thankfully that hasn’t happened to us, but I have a co-worker in Detroit who found out a month before her wedding the caterer was closing the week before her reception. Thankfully she found someone else fairly quickly through a caterer we use for work functions but I can’t imagine the stress of it!

I can’t wait to see the band you decided on!

This exact same thing happened to me! In fact, my FH and I were just debating what to do about my flush engagement ring because it is so low and we had to get a curved wedding band. It came in this week and we both HATED it. So… we are buying an “everyday” band that I’ll wear on my right hand (very European) and I’ll wear my engagement ring on my left hand. We’re keeping the band that goes with my setting - someday I may not be freaked out by all the diamonds. We’ll get married with the round “everyday” band rather than the curved with the engagement ring. Our jeweler is also going out of business, which means we have to go tomorrow to pick out my band because 1) he may not have any more in stock 2) finals are coming up and 3) we want the extra discounts.
