Dancing Perfection

April 27th, 2009 @ 5:17 pm by Mrs. Powder Puff

This is quite possibly the perfect first dance.

What makes a first dance memorable to you?

something playful, personable, and interactive with the crowd(meaning it catches the guests off guard)…

The one posted is good but I love this one posted on youtube….they end up dancing to sir-mix-a-lot and give the audience a great surprise:

Oh my gosh! I love that. If only my groom would go for it. **sigh**

What a wonderful first dance!
I think the best first dances are those that reflect the couple’s style. The wedding decor and colors etc are all about the couple and I don’t think the first dance should be an exception.

It’s about 1 minute too long IMO. They should have just danced to the original song without the extra chorus. But, they did a great job and I love the choice of song. I agree with xLailax that the first dance should be a reflection of the couple. We’re planning on dancing to “At Last” at our vow renewal, because we’re renewing our vows…at last. :) It’s also the song we danced to on our actual wedding night in our hotel room and every year on our anniversary.

the more i see first dances like this, the more worried i get that people are feeling the pressure to entertain their guests in these ways. it’s nice but not necessary. i have never gone to a wedding and secretly hoped to see a spot on, heavily choreographed dance. to be honest, the first dance should be about the couple, not whether or not uncle george is going to pay attention, imho.

i say, if you can pull it off relatively easy without much stress, then go for it. otherwise, if the 8th grade sway is good enough for the president and first lady, it’ll be just fine for everyone else.

@tea: keep in mind that for some people, the “8th grade sway” would be much more stressful than a choreographed number. Personally, I’d be miserable and feel really awkward doing the 8th grade sway….I’d rather do either some kind of ballroom dance or a choreographed number.

Incidentally, while it was choreographed I didn’t think it was as “heavily choreographed” as some other first dance numbers I’ve seen. It mostly just looked like a few ballroom dances strung together. As opposed to say, the big choreographed group numbers that some people do.

I haven’t seen any memorable ones. :( As a guest, I personally don’t really pay too much attention to the slow first dances. I do for a couple of minutes, then I lose interest.

I was fine with swaying but my MOH sent me some surprise first dances and I fell in love! I loved the team work between the couple and the cheering of their guests in the end! I definitely wanted something that my guests will enjoy and I want it to set the tone for the evening! Plus we don’t take ourselves seriously and we just wanna have fun! :)

I thought it was super cute and love that they had the full “Conan O’Brien” sized band. I kept worrying the groom would step on the bride’s dress!

I think that as long as the dance fits the couple, choreographed or not, it’s perfect. All eyes are on you at that moment so whatever keeps you from feeling too much pressure is the way to go!

OMG. That gave me goosebumps. I sooo wish that we could do that! We’re going with the “shuffle around and try not to rip off my bustle” moves.

I agree with xLailax–it should reflect the couple’s personality. The best first dance I’ve seen is the one my best friend did at her wedding. It was totally THEM. And the first part is pretty funny, too. :)

Now here’s a difficult question, but I’m sure with the help of al the bees out there we can figure it out: What dress is she wearing?

Thanks for your input.

I’m probably strange, but I’ve never really liked the first dance. I don’t like watching the couple dance and I usually leave the room during that point of the wedding. I know I’m weird!! We didn’t do one at all because it just wasn’t us. I like fun and quirky and different stuff though - so if it’s unique that would make it memorable for me.

I thought I wanted a casual first dance, and when I first watched this I immediately called our local ballroom studio and scheduled our first lesson! Thanks for sharing, this is absolutely stunning!

I guess you could say it was perfect, as in perfectly choreographed, but I actually didn’t like it that well. They didn’t seem to have any spirit or passion for it. Maybe because they were concentrating too hard. It tends to look best to learn a bunch of moves and then string them together on the spot.
