About Mrs. Mascara

For the Little Ones

April 27th, 2009 @ 3:02 pm by Mrs. Mascara

My fiance and I LOVE kids, and there are a ton of them in our families. While I understand why some people decide not to have kids at their weddings, we couldn’t imagine our wedding without them! There will be about 30 or so kids attending our event, so we have been thinking of something we can do to make them feel special.

At our reception venue, there is a small room connected to the room where our reception will be held. We’ve been told that we are free to use it, and until recently, I hadn’t figured out what we would use it for, if anything. I met with one of our decorators this past weekend on my trip to Michigan, where she suggested that we use the room as a type of playroom for the kids. Genius idea, don’t you think? I do!

Surely, most of the kids will spend plenty of time out on the dance floor, but if they are getting tired or don’t want to dance anymore, they’ll be able to go into the playroom and watch a movie, color, or take a nap! We’ll be setting up small tables with chalkboard tops, and lining the floor with pillows so they can get a little shut-eye or watch some Pixar films on the TV we’ll be bringing in (I’m thinking Shrek, since they get married in the end!).

I’ll probably put together some kid-friendly swag bags, with crayons, coloring books, juice, some snacks, and maybe a small toy of some kind. Hopefully, our little guests will feel like VIPs, because to us, they are!

Great idea!

(Maybe not what you meant to say, but Pixar didn’t make Shrek; Dreamworks did. I’m an animation junkie, and it’s like fingernails on a chalkboard when people use “Disney” or “Pixar” as a blanket descriptor for all animated movies!)

We don’t have as many little ones in the family right now, but i’ve seen some receptions with lots o’kids do a special little “kids buffet” at their height and with their favorite kid foods on it. I think that is pretty fantastic! =)

That’s a great idea. We’re definitely setting out something holding playthings for the kids. We’re having an outdoor wedding, so the pillows and movie might not work, but we’re definitely doing coloring book, crayons, and small toys to help keep them entertained!

We also plan to have children at our wedding and I definitely want to make them some sort of goodie bag. :)
Are you just going to estimate the number of children you think will attend?
I know a lot of our friends/family have young children, but we aren’t sure who will and who won’t be attending.

we had 15 kids under 12 and it was great! we set up 2 kids activity tables at the back of room with coloring supplies, puzzles and simple games. And hired 2 teens (my mom’s students) to act as activity coordinator through the end of dinner. The kids had a great time, and i have some great drawing that were made for the hubby and me.

@Jo: Haha, I was thinking this as well — the first Shrek was Mr. Bruschetta and my second date after my senior prom (which was the first).

No kids coming to our affair, but you’ve got some cute ideas…and I’m sure everyone will contribute some more!

I think your ideas are wonderful. We too are having kids at our wedding and so far the estimate is about 30 that are under 6. Because kids are part of our family we definitely wanted to include them in our wedding. We will have coloring books, crayons and other crafty projects for them. I am also looking to create goody bags as well. I wish I was able to do the movie thing but there aren’t any extra rooms.

We’re having a fun “color me” menu for our little guys! It says “Draw a picture of {MightySapphire} ” with a little box for them. Crayons only!! Markers are a no-no in a room with a white dress LOL!

@Jo: I totally used it as a blanket descriptor. Guess that shows how much I know about animated films!@Emilydll: Since the only kids invited are in our family, we should be able to get a pretty accurate count through the RSVPs and we’ll be able to figure out which ones are coming. I’ll probably make a few extra goodie bags just in case though, I wouldn’t want one poor kid to be left out!

The wedding venue we booked is pretty spread out. To keep the 5 kids (ranging in age from 9 months, & 2 years to 7 years old) in a certain ‘area’ we were planning on making a scavenger hunt. We are going to hide some gnomes that have numbers (so they can know they found every one of them) on them strategically throughout the social areas of the venue so they are involved with the guests looking for things. We were also considering having some riddles for the kids like; ‘find the mother of the bride and say the magic word that rhymes with cheese to get a prize!’… type thing.
There is a bridal room too, so I was going to set up a playpen, and portable cd player for the kids who need a time out from the festivities- or just a place to chill.

We are having children at the wedding, out of 50-60 guests, there will be about 8-10 children 12 and under. My god-daughter and my friends’ daughters (3 of them, like nieces to me) all wanted to be part of the wedding. Since we aren’t having attendants and only our children will be at the alter with us, I am having my florist make lavender roses with ribbons tied on them for each of the little girls. I also plan to put together goodie bags with a coloring book, bubbles and some other cute things inside.

Having a kids room was one of the best things we did. The kids stayed entertained, and the parents loved it. It was also used as a cry-room during the ceremony, which we hadn’t expected but was adored by the parents of infants.

BTW - the #1 hit of the night: BALLOONS.

We also had a little room attached to our reception hall. We actually made it into the “kids room” where all the kids had their meals too! They had regular tables and a kids meal for dinner (chicken fingers, fries, fruit). I made each kids a favor box from things I found on the $1 aisles at joanns and michaels… specifically for boy boxes and girls boxes. and in the middle of each table, I put a little tin box full of pary light sticks that you can make into bracelets. The kids loved it all and kept them entertained all night! I had 30 kids as well that are pretty rowdy so this was great.

Not that you asked, but if you are wondering where to get some great grab bag stuff:

1) Oriental Trading Company (lots of craft stuff and coloring stuff that comes cheap and by the dozen)

2) Dollar Tree (I don’t know if these exist where you live)

3) Dollar bins at Target (just about saved my life!!)

I would love to see pics of how it turns out!!
