Mrs. Tiramisu, Annapolis, MD/Maine Age and Occupation: 26, Healthcare Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Project Manager/Real Estate Management grad student Engagement Date: May 15, 2007 Wedding Date: July, 2008 Blogging Since: March 4, 2008 Venue: Oceanfront lawn and tent About Me: I was born and raised in Maine, now living in Annapolis, Maryland and planning a hometown wedding from afar. I’m nothing short of obsessed with wedding planning, and am loving the do-it-yourself madness that has now taken over my life! About Mrs. Tiramisu

The second stop on our three-island honeymoon trip was Bora Bora! It’s a short plane ride from Moorea to the island of Bora Bora, and they serve fresh pineapple juice on the flight! We had been told in advance to sit on the left side of the plane, and were rewarded with views like these:

Honeymooning in French Polynesia: Bora Bora : wedding honeymoon Dsc 083

Honeymooning in French Polynesia: Bora Bora : wedding honeymoon Dsc 08301 The airport is located on its own private “motu” (island), and so transportation to your hotel is by boat. Another island, more welcome leis (and the shell ones were the goodbye leis from Moorea!):

Honeymooning in French Polynesia: Bora Bora : wedding honeymoon Dsc 085 You’ll have to excuse the photo quality from here on out—we had big time camera issues during our trip, including breaking our normal (non-zoom) digital SLR camera lens, finding out that our “waterproof” digital camera wasn’t, and a non-functioning memory card.

Since we had stayed on land in Moorea, we decided to spring for one of the famous “overwater bungalows” in Bora Bora. We were psyched to find out when we arrived at our hotel (The Bora Bora Pearl) that we had been upgraded from a regular bungalow to a “premium” overwater bungalow! Apparently this isn’t as common as you would hope for honeymooners in French Polynesia, as a good majority of the guests there are in fact on their honeymoon.

The view from the porch looked like this:

Honeymooning in French Polynesia: Bora Bora : wedding honeymoon Dsc 091 Mr. Tiramisu goes for a swim after our ice bucket lid flew off the deck into the water:

Honeymooning in French Polynesia: Bora Bora : wedding honeymoon Dsc 094 Mount Otemanu from our porch:

Honeymooning in French Polynesia: Bora Bora : wedding honeymoon Dsc 09101 I took this one lying on the bed!

Honeymooning in French Polynesia: Bora Bora : wedding honeymoon Dsc 09102 The Pearl Resort is part of a project to install artificial reefs throughout the Bora Bora lagoon. Together with a marine biologist, they have created a coral nursery system called Toa Nui (”big coral”) that runs underneath all of the bungalows. Apparently this serves to re-establish the endangered coral population (coral is able to grow on the artificial reef). Pulling back the glass top on our coffee table revealed our own personal coral garden, which attracted gorgeous fish at all hours of the day.

Here’s a view of Mr. T through the coffee table:

Honeymooning in French Polynesia: Bora Bora : wedding honeymoon Dsc 09201 I was happy to spend a lot of time here, just checking it out:

We were gifted once again with a bottle of champagne, which we enjoyed on our deck before heading to dinner.

Honeymooning in French Polynesia: Bora Bora : wedding honeymoon Dsc 09401 Honeymooning in French Polynesia: Bora Bora : wedding honeymoon Dsc 096 For dinner on our first night in Bora Bora we had made reservations at Villa Mahana. I had read amazing reviews about the food here, and it did not disappoint. Mr. T had the best Mahi Mahi he has ever eaten, and I had filet mignon with red wine vanilla sauce and the most amazing gorgonzola gnocchi. We both agreed that the dessert of homemade coconut ice cream was one of the most delicious things either of us had ever tasted. We made our reservations via email months in advance (damien@villamahana.com), as there are only six tables and they fill up quickly!

Bora Bora offers so many things to do to fill your time… we spent one afternoon paddling around the lagoon in one of the resort’s sea kayaks, and doing a little snorkeling:

Honeymooning in French Polynesia: Bora Bora : wedding honeymoon Liamkay (Is it just me or do these pics taken with our disposable underwater camera make it look like we honeymooned sometime in the ’70s?)

Honeymooning in French Polynesia: Bora Bora : wedding honeymoon Emkayak The highlight of our adventures in Bora Bora was definitely our SCUBA dive! Neither of us are certified, but we had each done a few intro SCUBA dives in the past. This was our first dive together!

Honeymooning in French Polynesia: Bora Bora : wedding honeymoon Scubatw It was definitely the coolest dive either of us had been on. I’m really glad that it wasn’t my first, and that I was feeling pretty comfortable underwater, because not long into the dive we were greeted by a whole herd of these guys…

*Cue JAWS theme song.*

Honeymooning in French Polynesia: Bora Bora : wedding honeymoon Sharks Of course Mr. Tiramisu had to swim on over and take a closer look. Here is a photo of my new husband… and a shark. (Eeeeek!)

Honeymooning in French Polynesia: Bora Bora : wedding honeymoon Scubal This was as close as I cared to get:

Honeymooning in French Polynesia: Bora Bora : wedding honeymoon Scubae They were all just harmless reef sharks… Black Tip, White Tip, and Lemon sharks… but it is still a little daunting when one decides to swim straight towards you!

Honeymooning in French Polynesia: Bora Bora : wedding honeymoon Shark This dive was enough to convince us that we really want to get SCUBA certified!

Honeymooning in French Polynesia: Bora Bora : wedding honeymoon Hiscuba Anyone else spend a good portion of their honeymoon underwater?

Oh wow, I don’t think I’d be brave enough to dive with sharks — but I’d totally feed the fishies! :-)

What a beautiful place! You are so fortunate!!!

I attempted scuba diving in the Bahamas, but I completely freaked out before I was about to jump off the boat. I thought I would drown will all that weight on me. So I enjoy snorkeling instead. :)

{Quick “Mommy Warning”}
A word of caution to the uncertified diver:
The reason why they offer certifications is to give you the knowledge you need so you don’t DIE. SCUBA diving can be dangerous!! You can get the bends if you don’t know what you’re doing! If you choose to dive without certification, do like Mrs. Tiramisu and stay in SHALLOW WATER. Dive with a guide or a certified buddy who knows what they’re doing so they can calculate your rest times and ascent times. Also, DO NOT dive the day before or the day of your flight in or out. Bad juju. If you can, take a quick cert. class before your honeymoon! There is a PADI cert. and a NAUI cert. and they are equally good.
{End “Mommy Warning”}
Your villa looks beautiful Mrs. T!

1.) That is not a clownfish, it is a Picasso Triggerfish. Clownfish look like Nemo!
2) I highly highly recommend Columbia Scuba if you are looking for an area dive shop to do your certification class at. They rent women’s wetsuits and BCs, which is crucial to having a comfortable dive, and have a really good stock.

Thanks for posting this Mrs. Tiramisu! It sounds like we are taking very similar honeymoons with just slightly different hotels and we are only going to Bora Bora and Moorea. We also made reservations already at Villa Mahana after reading about it! I expect to spend a lot of time looking through that glass coffee table.

I’m jealous of the overwater bungalow. That is like my dream honeymoon.

Not so jealous about swimming with the sharks though, I think I’d have a panic attack.
