About Mrs. Mary Jane

Let’s Talk Colors.

April 27th, 2009 @ 4:50 pm by Mrs. Mary Jane

Since I finally have a dress I can love, it’s finally time to start thinking about my favorite accessory: shoes! (Who am I kidding: I’ve cared more about the shoes than the dress all along. :) )

I have a couple of color options, but it’s pretty of dependent on the color scheme I choose. I don’t have tons of stuff to color coordinate for my low key wedding, but I do have two pretty noticeable things: shoes and flowers.

My initial thought for my September wedding was to go for an orange bouquet. With my ensemble, I could wear white, but I’d rather wear a colored shoe. I’ve been less than successful at finding a lot of decent orange shoes at budget prices, but there are a few options out there. Remembering that my dress is bright white, the orange color scheme would give me something like this:

(sources: left, top center, top right, bottom center, bottom right)
Note: Since I know you’re going to want to know, these shoes are Cole Haan Air Ibeza Strap (top left) and A. Marinelli Tune (bottom right).

The other color palette I’ve been considering revolves around blue shoes.

I’m loving some of the blue shoes that are out there and I think they’d make a great “something blue”. The issue is that blue shoes don’t exactly mesh well with orange flowers when you’ve got no other colored elements to tie them together! So with this option, I’d have to switch up my flowers and go with something else (perhaps white). The result is something like this:

(sources: Left, top center, top right, bottom center, bottom right)
Note: The white and blue shoe is the Naughty Monkey Dream Weaver. The sandals are RSVP Nikki.

A bonus (an insignificant one, but a bonus just the same) to this blue color scheme is that my ring box, which I hope to use for the transport of our rings, has the bluish/teal detailing as well:

One annoying little thing I have to keep in mind when I’m choosing a color palette is the availability of flowers in the color I want. If I get my flowers at a florist, color won’t be an issue. I’m not picky about the type of flowers, so I know I could at least get a bouquet of white roses pretty easily at any florist. But if I get them at a grocery store, I may not be able to find an all-white bouquet. (I’ve been keeping an eye out, and I have consistently seen orange bouquets throughout the seasons.)

Maybe it’s time to buy some shoes and see how they look (and how they feel - I cannot stand an uncomfortable shoe!) with my dress.

Hive, help me out here.

Which color scheme would you choose?

Those Marinella Tune shoes are hot! Orange is such a fun, lively color and with such a low-key event, you don’t have to worry that it’ll be overwhelming! I say go for it. ^_^

I love those blue heels. But I do agree that Orange is very sept. If you can’t find any orange shoes you love then go with the blue. Since you don’t have a set colors to work from you can make the colors work with the shoes.

be careful with white! For our after the wedding shoot (We had to reshoot our wedding pictures), I wasn’t going to pay for another bouquet and my mom said she could recreate it if I got her white roses… Easy enough, right? Wrong. for two days my parents looked and I looked. Thank god, the night before, I made two more stops and found one at one store and the other dozen at another!

seriously, it’s all luck of the draw when it comes to grocery store flowers, but I have read on weddingbee that you can call ahead and order some??

*i love your dress BTW!

We’re doing orange and I’m on the hunt for orange shoes too! One option is always getting some dyables. Our bridesmaid dresses are David’s Bridal’s tangerine and if it comes down to it I’ll be buying some white shoes and taking them there to dye tangerine. But the blue seems so peaceful and divine too! :)

I love your orange palette!
How cold is it going to be in ND in september? Maybe closed-toed shoes will be more comfortable?

I am an orange bride! I got great orange shoes at Nordstrom - Glint addison peep toe pumps. Really comfy:

Any colour goes with white (obviously). Also, any colour fits with September since it’s in the middle of summer/fall and depending where you live, it can still be quite warm in September.
I would say, look for a pair of comfortable shoes in ANY colour (just find the perfect pair of shoes first, then work out the colour) and then find flowers to match. If you then realize it’s easier to go with a florist than finding flowers yourself at the grocery store, you can make that decision. Anyway, going with a florist shouldn’t be too expensive since you don’t even have to tell them it’s for a “wedding”.
Hope this helps! I think it really simplifies the decision-making process, by making one decision at a time, instead of all of them at once!

What color is the inside/outside of the courthouse? I would try to harmonize with where you are taking photos.

BTW, both look good to me.

Both please! I think an orange bouquet wrapped in a delicous blue ribbon could look amazing!
Plus you could find a blue tie with petit orange stripes for the mister-

I agree that the orange is very fall-y, but I think you’d be able to re-wear the blue shoes after the wedding more than orange ones.

I will be using oranges and reds at my wedding and intend on wearing red shoes.

I think you should get some orange shoes! They will be a great re-wear come summer!

Go for a color you love…..anything will work in early September! Just find the shoe…then find the flowers. :) Enjoy! I love the change in dress! I think it will make the day much more fun and less business.

My best friend’s colors are aqua and orange and I think it’s a fabulous color combination. She is even wearing Erindesmar’s Glint shoes, which are super cute. I say go with your orange flowers and have a blue ribbon wrapping them together. After that a blue or orange shoe in a favored style is easily coordinated!

After reading some of your posts, you seem to have such a vibrant personality that orange seems to scream your name. But, if you find blue shoes that you do really like, what about doing yellow flowers instead of orange? My high school colors were orange and blue and I personally never really liked that particular combo, but think that blue and yellow compliment much better.

I love the blue but I have a serious bias against orange (main color of 3 of our football rivals! haha). Plus, I always think of Carrie Bradshaw’s white outfit with the blue Manolos!

If I remember correctly from art class in high school, blue and orange are complimentary colors so you can do both! Wear the blue shoe, but carry the orange flowers and I think it will look great.

I too love the orange flowers with blue shoes, what about wraping a blue ribbon around your boquet to tie in the blue. I also think your dress would look lovely and increase the girley factor with a ribbon sash which could be blue to match the shoes.

Miss MJ - I would go with the blue shoes and orange bouquet. If you throw a few blue flowers in, that would really contrast well w/ the orange, and let you match, if that made you comfortable.

Blue and orange… awesome idea! I kind of have an unhealthy obsession with those white and blue pumps… but I think the orange marinella tunes are awesome too. What can I say, I love shoes. lol.

The orange is very fall-y, but that pop of blue that matches your ring box lining is my favorite!

Why don’t you tie the blue and orange together through a hair fascinator, or the ribbon on the bouquet? I love the two colours together, but you’re right that finding all white flowers is always a gamble!

If you are careful with the flower selections, you can incorporate both blue and orange into the bouquet. This way you can still wear blue heels.
