Mrs. Cowboy Boot's Picture
Mrs. Cowboy Boot, Santa Fe Age and Occupation: 25, Magazine Editor Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Artist and Whitewater Rafting Guide Engagement Date: April 28th, 2008 Wedding Date: October 2009 Venue: Devil's Thumb Ranch, Colorado About Me: I grew up in Los Angeles and have since lived in San Diego, Boston, Italy, Hawaii, New York City, and Santa Fe. I speak Italian and love pasta. My real passion is the outdoors, though. When I'm not at work, I'm snowboarding, hiking with my two dogs, mountain biking, surfing, cross-country-skiing, or boating New Mexico's rivers. Despite my boyish love for adventure, I'm a girly-girl at heart and am overly-excited to pull off the romantic, vintage-inspired, country wedding of my dreams.
About Mrs. Cowboy Boot

Dreaming. Romanticizing. Those are two things I am darn skilled at. Put me in charge of whipping up a swoon-worthy wedding with no budget attached and I’d be off and running in no time. But, with family on two sides of the country to consider and a bank account that’s nowhere near out of this world, we had to be a wee bit more realistic.

That said, a girl can dream, can’t she? Somewhere in between searching for venues back East and booking Devil’s Thumb Ranch in Colorado, a few venues popped up that could be appropriately filed under “gasp”, “sigh”, “swoon”, and, well, “unrealistic”.

Let’s rewind and run through my short-list of dream venues, shall we?

1. Mankas Inverness Lodge one hour north of San Francisco. It’s a fishing and hunting lodge from 1910 tucked between Tomales Bay and Tomales State Park near Point Reyes. Surrounded by woods and nature, this arts-and-crafts rustic style camp (with nine rooms and two cabins) is intimate (read: probably 50 guests max), but so special. I mean, check out this gorgeous wedding there. All pictures below by Mel Barlow.

2. Sea Ranch Lodge on the Sonoma-Mendocino coast in Northern California. Rolling grass and redwood bluffs surround this 1970s eco-community. Honestly, it was the barn over the ocean that had me from the start. All photos below by Ann Hamilton.

3. The final place I seriously yearned for (and actually considered with a guest list of about 20) was Hanalei, Kauai. I love the way the giant, lush cliffs hug the bay, how the perfect surf rolls in, the turquoise water, and the gentle, warm breeze.

Out of anywhere in the world, this is where I’d have our ceremony. Too bad, weddings are not allowed on the pier.

We’d rent a beach house overlooking the ocean with a big lawn like the Faye Estate. A bunch of us would stay there. Our guests would rent houses within walking distance. And we’d have an outdoor reception on the lawn.

Oh, wouldn’t it be nice?

Where did you dream of getting married that was outside of reality?

Oh I so wanted to do a destination wedding!!! Somewhere tropical and outside the hurricane belt, where we could spend the weekend with our most favorite people, get married and then have a few days of honeymooning afterwards. Bur of course it would cost more than us staying here and getting married, and we’ll be able to have more people. But I totally swooned over and over again at Mrs Sea Breeze’s wedding….

Oh wow, the Faye Estate is just gorgeous! I guess if I could dream HUGE I’d have wanted to fly to Italy (with fam and friends in tow) for a destination wedding. :-)

I heart Mankas Lodge. I tried contacting them for our wedding and they never got back to me- not meant to be. Sea Ranch Lodge is beautiful but cold 90% of the year. BUT the place in Hawaii makes my heart swoon. Ahh, to be on a warm beach!!

I love Mankas Inverness Lodge! I would have loved to get married there if I didn’t have such a large guest list! All three of those destinations want to make me escape right now! I like your taste Miss CB!

I love northern california. Would #1 and #2 have been too expensive from site fees, or too expensive for guests to travel to?

@Miss Rye Bread: Well, for our East Coast guests (who can’t travel as fiscally easily as our West Coast guests), it would’ve been expensive to get them to Cali. Hawaii is, well, obvious. But the real reasons we couldn’t choose those two Nor Cal venues: 1) Mankas never got back to me either (similar to Peep Toe) and 2) the Sea Ranch Lodge was going under renovations and not holding any weddings this year.

*Swoon* Those shots from Mankas made my heart skip a beat. I LOVE the shot next to the old boat.
If money were not object I would looked into getting married in Scotland. I LOVE Scotland :)

I LOOOOOVE all of those. Especially the third one. And I also am drooling over the dress the bride in the Sea Ranch Lodge photos is wearing. ;)

OOh, I love that first location. I would probably have had it in the hill country somewhere.. maybe near my Opa’s house.
