The (Non)Wedding Budget Breakdown

April 28th, 2009 @ 12:16 pm by Mrs. Mary Jane

Our $1000 budget wasn’t actually set in stone: it just worked out to be around that much. We wanted to spend as little as possible, so I tried to come up with what I thought were reasonable amounts to spend on the things we need and want in order to pull off our wedding in style. Here are the details. The green number after the slash indicates our actual expenditure.

Marriage License: $110/?
$110 is the cost for a marriage license in Minnesota, where we were originally considering tying the knot. If we do it in North Dakota, it’ll cost a little less. We haven’t decided yet.

Dress: $250/$14
This was my initial dress budget. The brown suit cost $170; I returned it. My white eyelet dress was much more budget friendly! I am still planning to buy a shrug, pashmina, or light jacket to go with my dress, but I don’t think it’s going to bring the dress budget total even close to my original estimate.

Shoes: $100/?
I haven’t bought my shoes yet, but I hope to do better than $100 for them.

Accessories: $50/?
I have a string of pearls given to me by my grandma. I bought a pair of earrings that are similar to my ring; they were $28 at Macy’s but free with a gift card I had from Christmas. I’m still unsure about a hairpiece. (Barrette? Headband? Birdcage veil? We’ll see.)

Flowers: $60/?
…if I get them at a florist, which I might. I don’t intend to buy a “bridal bouquet”; I’m just going to get some flowers and wrap them myself. Grocery store flowers tend to cost about $20/bouquet, so I’d estimate about $40 in case I want to combine two bouquets.

Cake: $30/?
A round cake for 10 costs about $15 at our local grocery store. I am thinking of making my own topper with materials that will cost under $10.

His clothes: $100/?
We’re not sure what Mr. Mary Jane is going to wear. This may amount to a shirt and tie if he wears pants and shoes he already owns.

Dinner for 8: $150
We plan to buy dinner for our 6 guests and ourselves at a local restaurant.

Announcements: $150/?
I’m planning to make some kick-ass marriage announcements (about 50) to send to friends and family to alert them of our new married status.

Total estimated budget: $1000.

What am I missing above? For starters, the paper products. No invitations or save the dates. No postage. There is no reception. No centerpieces, no DJ, no tent rental, no favors, no plating fees, no wait staff or catering. Transportation? We will use our own car. There will be no professional hair or makeup, no wedding party, and no dress alterations (aside from those I may do myself). Photography? Our parents will take photos of us. (Though I may have something else brewing - we’ll see!) We may decide to do an after-shoot, but it depends how good the photos from our parents are and how much money we have after we spend a summer home-improvementing. So right now, photography is not in our budget. My hope is that we will save money on enough of the other items above to allow for us to add it to our expenses without breaking our budget.

You may also notice that I did not include our rings in the above budget. Wedding rings are life-long symbols of our commitment to each other. They are someday-heirlooms: our most treasured pieces of jewelry. They are not, in our opinions, a wedding day expense (and hence not part of the wedding budget).

I also did not include a honeymoon. While we are planning to have one, we’re not planning to have one right after the wedding. One of the reasons we elected to have such a low-key wedding was so that we could afford the rings we wanted and the honeymoon of our dreams. We don’t know what that dream is yet, but we know we want to leave the continent, and for quite a while.

So there you have it: a rundown of our very bare-bones budget. I plan to revisit this with updates and reflections after our wedding so you can see what saved us money, what was right on, and where we had to splurge a little.

Do you have a budget? Have you been pleasantly surprised by some expenses, but hit harder than anticipated by others? What were your biggest splurge and your best savings?

I love budget posts. They really help and make you think. We don’t have a budget set in stoen either. I estimated how much everything will cost, then I try and find the best deal under that price. It has worked well and we are going way under what we were originally thinking and hwat we were told the wedding would cost in the area we chose.

The biggest splurge is the guestlist. The savings have actually come from the two places I was willing to splurge- video and photography- the two places I thought would be way more!

Our budget is 5k (not including the honeymoon). Our splurge is the honeymoon and photography.

Hmm… Are you sure about your dinner budget? Does that include alcoholic drinks?

I’m still giddy over the dress you found!! Our biggest splurge is the venue. Our savings include mostly everything else (trying, at least).

I adjusted my budget as I went along. I don’t know if that really makes it a budget? But as I realized the dress would cost WAY less and the food WAY more, I simply adjusted the values. I suppose my budget is more of a way for me to track my expenditures than to prohibit my spending. Because as I’ve wanted to add, I did. As I’ve nixed items, they’ve disappeared.

For those of you curious about how to feed 8 for under $150… only 2-3 people will be drinking alcohol, and one of the guests is a kid. Now let’s say we were to go to Applebees. (We’re not, but it’ll be somewhere similar.) Assume each of the 8 people orders a $12 dinner and a $3 beverage, on average. It works out to $12. Upgrade a couple of those beverages to wine and tack on a few Appetizers, and we’re good to go. :)

*I meant similar price-wise to applebees - not necessarily a similar restaurant.

Miss MJ,

I grew up in GF, ND and my maid of honor is coming down to Louisiana from there.

She said she saw a Mens Warehouse in Fargo, near the Toy’s-r-Us the other weekend. Just an FYI, if you were interested in checking it out, but a single rental would probably hit the top of your budget.

Cool - we’ll probably not be renting a tux though.

LOVE this post! Good for you for sticking to a budget! We are spending way more than I wanted on our venue/dinner, but saving a ton in other areas. Even with what many consider a “low-cost” wedding, I am having regrets and wishing we could do something more similar to your beautiful wedding. It sounds like it will be a perfect day that you can look back on with no regrets! (and more importantly, you can afford to look forward, too!)

Our budget is around 7k and that includes our honeymoon and wedding bands (though not my e-ring - which shouldn’t be included anyway, I think). Our biggest splurge would have to be our caterer. The best savings (EVER!) were our church and reception venue which was a gift from our lovely pastor!

Our biggest budget saver was our unexpected “regrets” to our invitations! Although it was sad that we had more people RSVP no than anticipated (because almost all the guests are local), I felt much less sad the other day when I updated our excel spreadsheet, and it took off about 10 per cent of our catering bill and another 10 per cent of our rentals!

I always love your posts. Your plans sound just wonderful.

There are a couple small places I’d splurge, though. :)

Splurge #1: How about budgeting some money ($15 or more) on a DIY wedding album? You can put your parents’ photos into a “published” album using a service like blurb.com of shutterfly. It’s a small wedding, but the memories will be big!

Splurge #2: have your guy buy new pants. Just like with your suit idea, he’ll definitely wear them again, but when he wears them, he’ll be thinking, “hey! I got married in these!” :)

Love your plans. Thanks for posting!
Best Wishes

@midwestelle: I actually did plan to do some albums (either blurb-etc, or scrapbook). I didn’t include it in the budget since like the rings it’s a “long term” investment. (Though, if I want to lay it out like that, photography would also be a long term investment, as would the marriage license, shoes, earrings, etc… Hmmm!) Do you think I should have included it in the budget?

Did you know that you get a discount on the marriage license in MN if you do premarital counseling or take a premarital class? The fee drops to $40 only.

I think you only need 12 hours of counseling (or retreat or class) to get the $70 off.

@Andrea - I did see that, but Mr. Mary Jane and I decided not to pursue it. One reason is that we don’t feel we need it - some of our friends have done it and it seems that they talked about issues that Mr. MJ and I laid out on the table within the first half-hour of meeting - we’re OPEN with each other like whoa. But beyond that, it’s a religion thing. Admittedly I haven’t looked hard at all, but almost all of the pre-marital counseling offerings I’ve seen were either based out of a local church, or were being sponsored/offered by an organization with Christian or otherwise religion-based values. This is not in line with Mr MJ’s and my beliefs. And lastly, it’s a time thing. For the time it would take for us to go to a nearby Minnesota city for counseling (though EGF isn’t far), to sit through the counseling… for very busy career people and students, the many hours saved are worth the extra $70 spent. So, we’re just gonna fork it over if we decide to marry in MN. ;)

I’m loving the $14 dress marked off! Lucky you! But hey, I’m getting a $4000 for less than $800, so I’m not doing too bad, right?

Hmm. Well, I added the blurb albums to our budget to make sure we don’t end up buying a $200 album from a photographer (although hopefully our budding photographer friend will take the pics). So for me, I like seeing it in the budget because it reminds me that we’re saving money!

Also, I think that will be the “gifts to our parents” (I know it’s not necessary, but why not?) Simple, affordable, and meaningful. Done.
