Where Did I Find You?

April 28th, 2009 @ 11:37 am by Mrs. French Bulldog

date

When I do something weird or quirky, which I am known to do, Mr Frenchie just smiles and says, “Where did I find you?”

To which I answer, “On the internet.”

Yep, Mr Frenchie and I met on the internet. How very new millennium of us! ;)

I guess I was never really turned off, or afraid of meeting someone on the internet because that was how I met my very first college boyfriend. He was a friend of a friend, and we were set up online before we met. So in that case, I didn’t really “meet” him on the internet but I talked to him on the internet before I “met” him. Does that make sense? Internet dating didn’t turn Mr Frenchie off either, because when his parents remarried, after their divorce, they both met their new husband/wife using the personals in the newspaper.

Anyway, 3 years ago when my ex-boyfriend and I had broken up, I decided to try Match.com. Knowing there can be a LOT of freaks on the internet, I went in with a plan. I wasn’t going to date anyone who wasn’t a college graduate or at least in college, and they needed to be Christian, or at least open to Christianity, because I was very involved in my church at the time. Also, they needed to live fairly close to me. After a month and 4 first dates later, I received an email from Mr Frenchie. I was immediately interested - he was cute (check), Christian (check), in college (check) and didn’t live too far away (check). Mr Frenchie and I exchanged emails for a few weeks and one night, after we chatted on AIM, I was the one to give him my phone number… he was taking things a little too slow for my taste hahaha.

How did you meet your Mr? Like us, did you turn to the World Wide Web?

Awww, Mr. Frenchie’s “Where did I find you?” question is so cute!

Mr. Bruschetta and I really got to know each other very well over AOL Instant Messenger in the days leading up to my senior prom — he was my date, but we were so awkward we didn’t really talk in person before the big night!

Match.com here as well. Our first “meeting” was a shopping trip to the super wal-mart at midnight (long story). So I like to call him my roll-back special :)

I’ve found that telling my peers that I met my husband online is a lot easier than telling my family or people my parents’ age. There’s still that “but… it could be anyone looking at your profile!” stigma, I think.

But I found that meeting people in “real life” dating scenarios (in bars, for example, or through mutual friends) doesn’t guarantee you a good match, either. In fact, some of the worst break-ups I’ve had resulted from being set up through mutual friends!

I always tell people that I wouldn’t have thought twice about my mister if I’d met him in real life, though - we’re both very quiet, and not the sort of people who would randomly ask out a cute stranger - so the internet was a perfect means for us to meet!

I met Mr. BF on Yahoo Messenger…we met at my apartment complex when I was working at the front desk. I figured that was neutral enough and if he was a weirdo, campus police walk around often. :) Glad he wasn’t a weirdo…well, not a criminal minded weirdo, but he is a dork like me! :)

I met my husband on Match.com, my sister (at my urging) also met her husband on Match.com!

We both lived in New Jersey at the time, so in typical Jersey fashion, our first date was at a diner!

I met FH on our first day of move -in at college. It took us 4.5 years to actually start dating, but we had been friends for so long, that it was a natural transition.

@Jo: Wow, it never occurred to me that if I had met Mr Frenchie in a bar I probably wouldn’t have thought twice either. I always joke with him that we would have NEVER dated in high school, though.

@Miss Ballet Flat: Good call on the neutral meeting place! I was usually all about that, but for some reason I let Mr Frenchie pick me up at my house… we live in a gated community so I guess I thought I was safe. But, he totally could have killed me and left me in a ditch :-/

Yay! For internet dating success stories! Although we did not meet on the interet (school) I believe it’s so different than the old misbelief of internet dating. I wish certain single guys we knew would be more open to the idea. Meeting someone after college is SO hard.

My sister met her husband on Match, too–and a good friend who just got married last month! I think it gives you a lot more opportunity to “screen” and have an idea who someone is, especially with how the world works today.

I met my FI in college in the outdoors club. I wondered what the punk kid with blue hair was doing in a backpacking club. He wondered if the preppy blonde chick had even been outdoors before. We were best friends from from the start. These days, his hair is back to brown, but mine is red!

eharmony.com baby! I have so many friends who have met their SOs that way. My FI’s mom was the one who talked him into signing up. Actually…my cousin’s mom talked him into signing up on jdate.com as well where he met his FI. Maybe our parents generation is more into the internet dating than we give them credit for!

Another match.com here!
Starting talking to him about 4 years ago but he still lived in LA at the time and I had already been talking to another beau. So unfortunately, I let him go and starting date “the other” and continued doing so for almost 3 years. After we broke up (we had stayed together past our expiration date), I decided to get back on the horse - errm, match, and my betrothed found me again - the 2 day I was back on match! By this time he had moved to Las Vegas (my city) and the rest is history. Wahoo!!!
Timing is everything I guess.

E-harmony.

He was talked into joining by a friend who had met his wife on E-harmony. I had heard E-harmony talked about on a radio program back in 2001, but I never joined up until 2007, because I was chicken. I finally decided to give it a try after some pushing by friends who had met their spouses online. My sister, my mom and my aunt also pushed me.

We met through our families but before him, I dated a few guys I met on match.com. One of them for almost a year. I met a few weirdos but most of the guys I met were decent guys, just not for me.

Every time eharmony runs their promotion on tv, I tell my FI that we should both fill out the questionnaire (as a joke) just to see if we’d be matched! He won’t do it. :)

Unfortunately there are a lot of freaks and creeps no matter where you go. I met my husband through the nerve/salon/onion personals in 2003. It was considered a little ‘weirder’ back then, but honestly I met some of the most interesting (and good looking) guys through online dating, and even found someone I liked enough to marry!

I can completely relate to all you ladies out there, I too met my man online. Though I must admit at first I was skeptical…meeting someone through Myspace was not on the top of my to do list (after all anyone sending messages through those networking sites are creeps right?) Anyhow it was nearly 4 years ago that I was first messaged by him and the rest is history (we couldn’t be happier). The story of how we met in person is actually the best one. After months of talking online I finally decided to be spontaneous and meet him in person. Looking back it prob wasn’t the safest thing to do..I didn’t tell my roommates where I was going or when I would be back and really for some reason thought nothing of it at the time. But, lucky for me he was normal and likely the sweetest guy I have ever met. I ended up staying over since it was an hour drive from where I lived (still not thinking anything of it). So after a great weekend with a great guy I get home happy as clam to see some very unhappy roommates waiting for me. Apparently one of them had seen my message to my guy saying I was on my way…They assumed since they hadn’t heard from me and I hadn’t called that I was kidnapped/missing. I had to call the police to tell them no I was not missing and that I was safe and sound, just not good at communicating. Regardless today we are happy and we still find ourselves skirting the question of how we met..we joke to each other and say we met through our mutual friend Tom.

We’re a match.com couple too. I dated a handful of men on match, but none were right, until I met him. I know that we wouldn’t have ended up together if we’d met at the bar, so it worked out perfectly this way.

All of you girls have such cute stories! On the other hand that makes me feel obligated to tell my story which should be much harder to tell our children than we met on match.com!
I was on an internship in San Diego for the summer and my entire plan was to have the summer of my life. The very first night my best friend and I went out to the closest bar to our apt and get as drunk as possible! I was already very drunk before I ever saw Mr. Chihuahua and when he walked in my first comment was, “Well he’s the first normal person thats been in here tonight, I am going to talk to him!” Well I dont remember the details of the rest of the night because by the end of the night I was sick, but he invited us to breakfast in the morning and then stood us up. We actually didnt make it either because we were sick, but led to a good laugh and then the best summer of my life and now the happiness for the rest of my life. How do you tell your kids you met drunk at a bar? Awful story, but makes me giggle!

FI messaged me on facebook.
we talked online for 2 weeks. and then met in a public place at a coffee shop. we’ve been smitten ever since (going on 5 years!)

i agree that its easier telling my peers, w hen most people ask i say we met at a coffee shop not because im embarassed, but because i dont want to have to explain the whole darn thing! lol

and i never imagined i would meet the love of my life online, butttttt i am forever grateful that he got the nerve up to write me, since he said he never would have “in person”.

hes awesome :-)

I finally did, within a week we were matched…..we did the whole eharm process, emailed about 2 weeks then, like you I had to speed things up by giving out my number! LOL! We talked and met about month later (he lives miles and miles away!) We were engaged within 3 months and now getting married 10 months after 1st matched! I love our story!!!!!!!

@ggsb: Too cute!

I’m glad going online worked out for you. I had a friend that kept finding all the WORST guys online. I think it was mainly because of her insecurities with herself (trying to find someone she thought was worse than her I guess) and they always ended up as one night stands or horrible breakups.

I think that if someone decides to go online to find someone, they should take a page from your book and know what they’re looking for before jumping in.

Oh, and I met my man at work but we spoke via AIM before the first date (that awkward time between just knowing each other and then knowing that you both like each other!).
