How I Knew It Was Coming…

April 29th, 2009 @ 11:45 am by Mrs. French Bulldog

Although my BFF’s hubbers proposed to her before the two had discussed marriage, in this day and age I think it is rare that a couple would get engaged without the bride knowing it was coming. Among all my newly engaged friends, 4 out of 4 couples had discussed getting married before becoming engaged. So, like them, I knew it was coming…

Last June, on the hottest day I can remember, Mr Frenchie and I went were eating lunch at The Corner Bakery and trying to decide what to do for the day. To my delight, Mr Frenchie asked if I’d like to go to Robin’s Bros and look at rings (UM YEAH!), not to purchase anything, but just to give him an idea of what I liked, since I’d be wearing the ring for the rest of my life.

I kinda threw him a bone and offered to first head over to the closest Auto Center to check out some new cars. Mr Frenchie had been talking about several new models he wanted to see in person, and I wanted to check out the new VWs.

After looking at all those shiny things, we went to Robin’s Bros to look at these shiny things…

Dream Ring

When we arrived at Robin’s Brothers it was a lot like being at the car dealerships. We were assigned a saleslady, and she walked us around as I tried on rings. At first, I tried on a bunch of pave rings, and after seeing them on my hand, I realized I didn’t like the pave settings. Boy, am I glad that Mr Frenchie suggested trying rings on first, because if had just shown him pictures, we would have ended up with something that looked more like costume jewelry (on my hand). Having seen what I liked and didn’t, our saleslady/ring specialist suggested the ring above, and I FELL.IN.LOVE!

After that, I just had to wait for Mr Frenchie to buy the ring and propose. And wait I did, for 5 LONG months.

Did you get to pick out your engagement ring?

Yup, we bought the diamond together, and then took nearly a year — yikes! — to figure out the setting…only to decide on another setting post-engagement. (So, we had the diamond reset.)

Is the inspiration pic what you liked, or what looked best on you?

I did. But I’m still waiting for my ring. Truth be told… I know which one it is (he doesn’t know I know which one so shhhh!) but he’s waiting to give it to me until after his older brother’s wedding in June out of respect for him. Which I understand, but man! I want that thing already!!

Bu we already have our date, venue, etc… so we just say we’re engaged already. Silly us!

Man, it is so true how different everything looks on the finger. I’m so glad we did this too, or I too would have ended up with something completely different.

My boyfriend and I have been together for 7 years and have been talking about marriage for 4. A couple of months ago he randomly said that we should go look at rings. The one I fell in love with wasn’t there the next weekend when I took my BFF to show her so I thought that maybe….just maybe he bought it. ^_^ Still waiting……

I actually didn’t get to pick out my ring. call me old fashioned, i didn’t want to be a part of it. FH and I talk about everything, and through the years we have discussed jewlery, and what I like and don’t. He went all by himself and found something he thought I would like…and OMG was he right. i don’t think I could have picked a better ring myself. This one is so me.

@Miss Bruschetta: The inspiration pic is what looked best on me. This ring is similar to what I thought I wanted. It is a beautiful ring, it just looked funny on my hand.

I did get to choose my ring, and I am very glad I did. I knew I wanted a princess cut diamond, and if I left dh alone the sales lady would have pitched a round diamond, which I hate.

I still had to wait around six months as well for him to propose, but he surprised me, I had no idea when he proposed!

My engagement was a COMPLETE surprise. My fiance has been married before and I was under the impression that he didn’t ever want to be married, again. I was fine with that. (Really!) When he proposed I was incredibly shocked.

That is almost my exact ring! I have 3 stones on each side, though, not 4. And yep, I picked it out. I narrowed it down to 3, but the one he ended up buying was the one I paid the most attention to. I think I wanted him to “feel” like he was picking it out. Ha. Sucker. Can’t wait to see your ring!

I guess I am in the minority, but I didn’t know it was coming. My family had asked me just the month before about if I we were going to get engaged, I replied that I wouldnt say no if asked, but we were happy and I wasn’t itching for a ring. But he picked out the ring all on his own, and I love it! Call me old school but I would not have wanted to know it was coming - the surprise was perfect.

We went shopping one day so he could see what I liked and he’s the one who made the final selections.

I knew he was looking a little, but we never went shopping together. His mom knew a few of things that I didn’t like and then he kind of went from there. I love it though!

I picked mine out in Maui then he bought it a week after we got back (I didn’t know it) then held on to it for another YEAR till our next Maui trip and proposed. I sorta knew he got it but wasn’t for sure.

we shopped together and figured out what style looked best [and which one makes both our hearts skip a beat] but ultimately he gets to pick out the ring.

Miss Bulldog- okay I have two things to say- first of all I got my ring at Robbins Bros too, in pretty much exactly the same way you did!! lol! Secondly I just figured out who you are (or were?) on the boards and I’m totally excited that you’re now a blogging bee–congrats!!

I picked out mine online! LOL But my FI waited to purchase it and they only had ONE LEFT in their ENTIRE FRANCHISE INVENTORY. Lucky he got it!!
PS-I adore your ring but I despise Robbin’s Brothers. DESPISE. You got it right, it’s like a car dealership. They are pushy and try to charge WAY TOO MUCH. I went in with an ex just for fun, and they wouldn’t let us leave without buying a ring! WOULDN’T LET US?? I literally had to flip off the sales lady and PUSH PAST HER to get out of there!! Worst window shopping experience OF MY LIFE. That store is on my blacklist!!

@MightySapphire: how strange! I had a completely awesome experience at Robbin Bros and would absolutely recommend them to anyone. I got the nicest salesguy ever who was so completely laid back and they just were not pushy at all about anything. They were able to work with our budget and didn’t force me to try on things I didn’t like. I love them! Now Jared is another story…had a bad experience there with pushy salespeople!!

That’s my ring!! I had no idea the proposal was coming when he got down on 1 knee. We had talked marriage but I was thinking 6 to 12 months from now.. He picked out the ring all by himself and I love it!
Your thoughts were the same as mine - if he had asked me what I wanted, I would never have picked this ring, but it’s totally perfect!

Like lobstergirl I was old fashioned about it and did not want to even talk about rings or go anywhere to look at them but he kept asking me to go with him and after looking online at hundreds of rings, I realized that I was very picky with the style, I wanted something unique but simple, so I gave in and we went to Robins Bros because they were the only ones around that carried the tacori ring that I liked. Like Miss Burgandy, we had a great experience they were very patient and helpful and not pushy at all. We made it very clear that we were there just to look because I would not be there with him when he would eventually buy it. It was still a surprise to me when he proposed just because it took like 5 months after we had initially gone ring shopping, apparently it was due to trying to schedule a meeting with my dad to ask him for my hand in marriage.

We are in the minority as well–I knew we’d get engaged in the next year or 2 but had no idea he was ring shopping already. I knew a couple girls who were totally nuts and pressuring their boyfriends to propose and I didn’t want Mr. Spin to feel like I was ever giving an ultimatum, so we kept marriage talk to a minimum. We knew we would get married and we knew he was just about to start PA school. So I was crazy surprised. ^_^

But man, I can totally see the allure in ring shopping! Trying on all the pretties…*sigh* Can’t wait to go try on wedding rings. ^_^

My FI proposed to me with a placeholder and we picked out my actual ring together. It’s custom made and one of a kind, and I finally get it TONIGHT!!

He totally surprised me, Valentine’s Day in our senior year of undergrad. He had actually blown me off on a few lunch dates prior so that he could sneak out to the jewelry store to pick out the ring and have it resized. I absolutely adore it, I couldn’t have picked out a more perfect ring for myself. The sweetest thing is that he said the sales lady showed him dozens of rings, and that when he saw this one, he immediately knew it was the one. :-)

I knew it was coming because he had told me he wanted to propose on my birthday but family issues forced that to not happen. Then a few days before, he was calling it my day. So I figured it would happen.
On the ring issue, we had discussed it, and he had my friend recon to see what I wanted. Well I said I wanted something plain and simple. He ended up going to the Jewelry District and designing his own ring with a jeweller. It is unique and complicated but looks simple and I absolutely love it.

I love your ring! I didn’t pick out my ring, but I knew it was coming, I just had to wait and wait, since we talked about it in college and it didnt happen until over a year after we graduated.
