I Have Issues [Part 1]

April 29th, 2009 @ 12:12 pm by Mrs. Mary Jane

I’m a nail biter, I have acne, and I don’t like vegetables.

How’s that for a super-fun way to start a post? Well, it’s all true. These are issues I’ve been trying to deal with for years, and as my wedding day approaches they’re becoming even more important to me. This is the first post of a three-part series about wedding-inspired self-improvement.

[source]

Nail biting is the problem that should be the easiest to solve. I have thin, peeling, flaking, easy-to-break nails. I always have. I can’t open a soda can or shampoo bottle without cracking a nail off, and they frequently get caught and tear on fabrics and other seemingly harmless surfaces. And to make matters worse, I bite ’em. I don’t technically chomp on them, but I passively gnaw on them when I’m nervous, bored, or simply when my hands are unoccupied. I do it while reading, while doing homework, while sitting in meetings at work, while driving… you get the picture. The main reason I do it is because my nails are so jagged and flaky all the time. I feel like I need to use my teeth to even them out a little. Not only does it look gross and childish for me to constantly have my fingers in my mouth, but it also further weakens nails that were fragile to begin with. I love having painted nails, but my nails bend and peel so easily that no manicure ever lasts more than a day or two. Now that I’m engaged, my hands get more attention than they used to. People sometimes ask to see my ring, and I know there will be photos of my hands on my wedding day too. I really want my hands to look nice.

Since getting engaged, I’ve taken these steps to help stop my nasty nail-noshing tendencies:

1. I take a calcium supplement with my supper. Part of the reason my nails are so thin and flaky is that I don’t eat enough dairy or drink enough milk. I just don’t like a lot of it very much. You can only go so far on cheese and ice cream! As a woman, there are a lot more important reasons than fingernails to increase one’s calcium intake, so I feel good about this step.

2. I keep nail files everywhere. I went to Target and bought a 12 pack of emery boards for under $2. I keep one in my purse, one at work, one in my school bag, one in my car, one by my chair at home… you get the picture. Since my fingers seem to end up in my mouth because they’re uneven, I didn’t want to give myself that excuse anymore. Hangnail? Break? Chip? Flaking? I have a file. No excuse to resort to teeth.

3. I moisturize. I bought some Burt’s Bees Cuticle Cream. I have some at work and some at home, and I put it on a few times a day. Not only does it help keep the raw cuticles and hangnails at bay, but I also don’t care to eat it (and hence, if my fingers are all greased up with this stuff, they won’t be in my mouth).

[source]

4. I’m aware of what I’m doing. Self-awareness goes a long way. To just be able to internally say, “You’re biting your nail. Stop it.” is a big step for me.

My results haven’t been perfect, but I have made some progress and I definitely have longer, nicer nails than ever before.

Have you got any bad habits you’re trying to kick before you say “I Do”?

have you tried pre-natal vitamins, or those specifically for enhancing nails and hair. Also their are some nail strngtheners out there that are pretty good.

Have you considered adding a b-vitamin (like biotin) to your regimen? I take one for hair growth, and it’s also supposed to help your nails…since starting it, I’ve definitely noticed a difference in their strength. Also, when I get stressed, the top layer of my nails sometimes peels and cracks…and with biotin in my system, that doesn’t really happen anymore!

i have weak nails too, and although im not a biter, they easily break, then snag, then tear. then repeat. ive started using sephora by OPI strengthener. so far they are lots stronger (i’ve only been using it about a week). we’ll see if the cracking stops too!

my fiancé is a nail-biter. The main reason I want him to quit is so his scraggly nails won’t scrape me!
I always keep nail clippers on me. Nail files can work, too, but are they suitable for brittle nails?
Have you tried nailtiques for the brittle nails? It’s a protein-enhanced nail strengthener! (not really nail polish). I love it!

i bite my nails, too, and for the same reasons. but my REALLY bad habit is biting the skin around my nails. i know it’s really gross, but there’s not a lotion out there that can make those tough edges go away. must be genetic.

I’m going to get some Burt’s Bees and see if that works for me. :)

I hope you also write a post about the acne!
At least you’re tall… I’m petite so I really look like a teenager and feel like one whenever I look at my face. I sometimes wonder why I still have acne if I’m not a teenager anymore! It stresses me out just thinking about it, and I have no idea how to get rid of it.

*sigh*

Try chewing gum - it will keep your mouth busy (and I mean that in the most PG way). It definitely helps me when I’m concentrating on something or stressed, which is when I tend to start chewing.

My nails used to be the same way - weak and peeling - and easy to tear. I tired everything - nutri-nail strengthener, cream, pre-natel viatamins etc. None of those worked. Then I started changing my diet to be heatlhier - my diet was awful. Once I added more veggies, H2O, healthy protein and fiber to my diet, my nails completely changed! Now they grow long and healthy - they look so nice, I don’t want to bite them anymore to even them out or fix rough edges. I can’t believe they are my nails!

I know one of your goals is to change your diet - I am sure it will help your nails, too! (and maybe acne).

we must have the same nails!! I bite my thin flaky annoying nails ALL. THE. TIME.
fiance hates it. he will sometimes pull my fingers away from my mouth.

Too bad he lives across the country and can’t be a on nail-biting duty all the time.

Your protein intake should also affect your nail strength - are you sure you are getting enough? With filing, make sure you file mostly in one direction - otherwise you weaken the nail.

Does it help you quit to know that nail biting can cause tapeworm?

I too have naturally crappy nails. I don’t typically bite them (though I do sometimes chew on my cuticles — ick) but it seems like they’ll split (horizontally) even when I’m doing my best to keep up with a nail care routine. I have even considered getting fakes for the wedding, though usually a plain ol’ pro manicure can make them look good even when they’re short.

I did find one pretty good strengthener at the salon — Duri Rejuvacote. I haven’t seen it at any other stores but you can buy it online. If you follow the directions on the box it does work better for me than a lot of other strengtheners I’ve tried (including OPI’s Nail Envy, Nailtiques and you name it).

I love the Burt’s Bees stuff! When I’m at home I try to use Solar Oil pretty regularly. Makes a world of difference … when I can remember to keep using it!

@edb:

That would be the same as telling a smoker all the negative side effects of smoking (and there are oh-so-many more than nail-biting) but that doesn’t necessarily make them stop.
Tons of people smoke even with the warning write on the cigarette packs. It takes strong will to quit.

It sounds to me like these three issues go hand in hand. Eat healthier (more veggies) and it will help your acne and nail strength. Eating veggies may be hard for you, but won’t it help to know that it may help your other two “issues”?

Definitely take a biotin daily - it has done wonders for my nail-splitting/cracking, although I don’t bite them (anymore, but as of like 12 years ago). That will most definitely help with the stregth!

I was a chronic nail biter as well, until about a month ago. I decided one day that I wanted pretty nails for my wedding, and that 30-something was too old to still have this habit. So, I enlisted some friends at work to help remind me to stop biting, and I hung a paper clip off my computer monitor - each day I didn’t bite my nails, I could add a clip to the chain… and if I bit, then they all had to go back in the drawer. A silly encouragement system…. but it has worked for me! Good luck - I know how tough a habit it is to break!!

Wow, are you me? :) I’ve been a nail biter as long as I can remember, and I’ve had the same thoughts… I want my hands to look nice on my wedding day, but I can’t see to stop biting!!! It’s not so much my nails (ok that’s a lie) but I, like FlipFlopBride, have really tough, dry skin around my nails and even my cuticles. I’m sure it’s a side-effect of all the biting, but I can’t seem to stop! Maybe I’ll try that Burts Bees stuff and see if it helps… and the biotin vitamin. Thanks, Miss Bruchetta and Miss Mary Jane!

Just like FlipFlopBride and Miss Snowflake I am not only a chronic nail biter but I also bite the skin around my nails. I’ve been a biter for as long as I can remember. When I was younger, my mom even tried soaking my fingertips in nail polish remover thinking I wouldn’t bite them when they tasted like acetone. Wrong. I still chewed on them. (I know…gross right?) Is there a Nail Biters Anonymous group we can all join for support? lol

I am tackling the nail biting thing right now. Duri Rejuvacote REALLY helped me get my nails stronger. I actually bought it at Bed, Bath and Beyond for $10 (minus by 20% coupon of course) :)

I was a nail biter/chewer my whole life - until last year! Then I just quit cold turkey. One day I thought, “You know… if I can’t resist the urge to chew my nail off, I’m a wuss.” No offense to you ladies ;) - that’s just what I told myself. And it worked! Fortunately for me, they’ve always been fairly strong, and now they’re long and I can tap them on the desk! Good luck! :)

I used to have the same problem but I also keep cuticle cream around and every time I feel like biting - I whip it out - no matter the place!

Another thing that’s really helped my nails (and hair growth - I’m trying to go from chin length hair to updo length) is GNC’s Women Ultra-Mega Vitamins. I’ve seen HUGE improvements and everyone compliments me on my nails now. I can even puncture the paper on top of pill bottles without an implement!

Another “scare factor” tactic I try to convince myself not to bite is the absolute fear of cracking my front teeth. My dentist warned me about the wear & tear on my front teeth from biting and told me if I didn’t stop it could lead to bigger problems… How’s that for something to convince you!

Good luck!

I’ve been a nail-biter all my life, but late last year I just got so sick of my nonexistent nails that I just stopped cold-turkey. I don’t have any tips — I just did it by constantly telling myself, NO, you cannot bite your nails.

You can do it!!

@Miss Rye Bread: I have to second Miss Rye Bread here. In addition to cuticle cream, I would definitely, definitely invest in a bottle of Nailtiques (be careful because there are other brands with similar names and packaging and I can’t vouch for them). I used to have nails that were weak and peely and Nailtiques makes them hard as a ROCK. No joke. The other thing is that I used Nailtiques for about a year and then stopped and my nails continue to grow in strong. It is really the most amazing stuff. You can use it alone as clear polish or you can use it as a basecoat. I would recommend using it as a clear polish though because using nailpolish isn’t going to do anything for your nail strength.

@prenatal vitamins suggestions - I just bought a bottle yesterday :)

@LatteLove: Mine does that too. I ask him to. But I also sometimes get irritated with him for it - thinking I just have to sneak in one more nibble! I’m “addicted”, lol.@edb: First off, I’m probably not getting enough protien or nutrients. Wait for part 3… I’m planning to talk about that. Second. EW, tapeworm? That does help a little I think! EWWW.

@Miss Rye Bread & jmc: Hadn’t heard of it. I will check it out :)

@TheEditrix: Thanks for the rec - I’ll check that out too.

@flbeachbride & sassypants: Biotin - I’ll check that out as well. I’m thrilled with all of these suggestions!!

@Hilary: Sadly, I know pretty much exactly how poor eating habits affect most other aspects of my health… but it’s always a matter of “i’ll try to shape up tomorrow”. hrm.

I’m glad I’m not alone, ladies!!

I don’t know if it’s an option for you, but they make sour flavored and chili pepper flavored nailpolish for biters. Also you may consider using strengthening polish and repolish EVERY DAY. I was doing this in high school (is it sad I used to match nail polish to my shirt?) and the taste of nail polish remover is HORRIBLE. I *HAD* to stop biting my nails, they tasted ICKY!!

I’m very bad about biting my nails too. I use a clear polish that tastes bad…the only problem is after a few hand washings, it looses its effectivness

I’m trying to give up caffeine! It’s not working! I need to do it for my health & teeth besides just quiting for the wedding but that morning glass of Coke just makes the day better!
Good luck with quitting! I second the strengthinging polish - it worked for me until I got sick of using it! LOL

@MightySapphire & Headuh: : I’ve tried it. I don’t mind the flavor of the vinegar or the chili pepper stuff, and nailpolish remover and nail polish are tolerable to me too (i know, gross). I even wish burts bees had some chemicals in it or something, ’cause as it is now it really doesnt taste that bad - the flavor DOES remind me that I’m doing it though, and then i cut it out.

@grumpybear722: I think I would just melt in to a puddle without caffeine. I don’t drink pop though… just coffee.

Same thing here! I wanted to finally have nice nails before getting engaged (I knew it was coming!)

I kept a file around all the time, used clear nail polish and cuticle cream, and also got manicures when I could. The manicures were expensive when you add them up, but were probably the best motivation. I wanted to have nice nails before going to get one, so I would work hard all week, and then once I had one I wanted to keep it nice for as long as possible.

Sadly, I love my motivation after the wedding and am back to having some sad looking nails. I’ll use some of the other advice here!

I was a hard core nail biter when I was little, I mean I made myself bleed all the time. The only thing that worked for me is I got braces so I physically could not get my nail in my mouth.

That story really doesn’t help you much, but I totally understand the addiction!! Good luck!

I am a total nail biter! My New Year’s Resolution was to quit biting, and for three glorious weeks I had long, healthy nails. I do it when I’m nervous or stressed, and it seems like I am constantly both in this economy. Thanks for the advice - it’s simple enough for me to start tonight!

Okay- I also bite my nails, and used to have acne, but I like my vegetables. Concerning the nail biting- I keep reverting back to it, even after I have stopped for awhile (law school is just too stressful not to). However, the acne is something I have finally conquered. After years of facial frustration, I can finally go out without makeup, and not feel embarrassed, and I can stare in the mirror in the evening without crying to my fiance. I spent my teenage years trying every type of acne product that walmart/target/random drugstore carried, then in my college years I started using more expensive, but equally uneffective products. After I started law school I went on Differin, which didn’t work very well, caused me to get severely sunburnt, and cost too much money. I switched to Proactiv, which made a small difference, but still very little, and at the same time bleached my almost black eyebrows red…..fun stuff! Finally, I started Sephora surfing, whereupon I tried several products which cost me a ton of money and didn’t help.
That is, until I finally found the CLARISONIC…..(I am not a product rep, believe me, just a converted cult follower) It was a huge investment (especially for a poor law student) but this thing is seriously worth its weight in gold. It took me two months to notice any difference, but now even my friends comment on my skin. I use it twice a day with Murad acne cleanser, and follow that with Clinique toner and oil-free moisturizer when needed. This is the first time I have been able to go without some thick acne treatment on my face!!!!! I understand that not everything works for everyone, as I have learned through my trial and error, but the basis of the Clarisonic is making sure your skin is clean, which will benefit everyone. I will tell you that I am currently using Juice Beauty Apple Peel for my acne scars. Not only is it Organic, but it also works amazingly at taking away those dark purple marks left behind from my pre-clarisonic era. My skin still isn’t perfect, but it is so much better than I ever imagined it could be. I had just assumed I would have to live with this for the rest of my life. Now, I have confidence that my skin will look great at our October wedding, makeup or no-makeup.

I have been dying to share the good news with someone who needed it, so do with it what you will, but I hope you have a lovely day!

This post could not have come at a better time. I don’t bite my nails, but I do bite the skin around my nails. I’ve been trying to stop, and have been wearing band aids on my thumbs all week to prevent myself from biting. It’s working! I’m only wearing a band aid on one thumb now, and I haven’t touched the other one. Now we’ll just have to see if this lasts…

Good luck. These habits are HARD to break.
