I Have Issues (Part 2)

April 29th, 2009 @ 4:56 pm by Mrs. Mary Jane

I shared with you my adventures in the world of Not Biting One’s Nails…

Next up, let’s talk about acne.

It started when I was about 12. Everyone said, “Ooo, you’re becoming a woman! Don’t worry, it’ll pass.” So we bought the Oxy, the Stridex, the Clearasil, the Clean ’n’ Clear, the Proactiv… you get the picture. I tried toothpaste. Baking soda. Salt… basically any acne “miracle cure” touted by the latest issue of Seventeen. (I must say: A paste of Baking Soda and water on your blackheads does work, by the way. Do it for a week and you’ll see!) To top it off, I was a swimmer from 5th until 12th grade, so I even had chlorine supposedly working in my favor. Still, the zits persevered.

For years, people were telling me “Don’t worry, you’ll grow out of it.”

By the time I was 16, my mom had me in to the dermatologist. That visit was the start of a decade of doctors, creams, ointments, pills, salves, astringents and suspensions. My face can withstand more powerful drying chemicals than any human skin should be able to tolerate. Hormonal birth control worked best to quell the outbreaks (it didn’t go away, but it got a little better), but it also gave me crippling migraines. By the time I was 23, people stopped assuring me that the pimples would go away, or that it was just a teenage hormone thing. Last year, I was getting so desperate that I was considering going on Accutane, a very powerful treatment that gives excellent results, but also carries serious warnings. I went to the dermatologist in December intending to ask about it.

She took one look at me and my annotated list of failed treatments past, and said she didn’t know what these previous docs had been thinking. THIS treatment wasn’t supposed to work with THAT one, and she had no idea why they’d put me on this OTHER one for the type of acne I had. She told me to wash my face with Cetaphil (not oil-free acne soap, not prescription 15% Benzoyl Peroxide rinse, just plain old Cetaphil). She told me to use a lotion with sunscreen in it, NOT oil-free (What? I thought moisture and oil were mortal enemies of those with acne!). She prescribed a twice-daily pill to me, and a couple of mild prescription lotions. And you know what? It worked. 5 months later, I get a pimple or two once in a while, but my face is nearly clear. I’ve gone from being tempted to call in sick due to the embarrassment that was my face, to feeling confident going to work with no concealer, foundation, or powder at all. My daily routine looks like this:

  • Morning: Wash face and moisturize (I use the Cetaphil lotion and face wash). Apply “Benzaclin” prescription lotion. Apply oil-free makeup (I use Neutrogena) if needed. Take a pill: Keflex.
  • Evening: Wash face. Apply “Differen” prescription lotion. Take another Keflex pill.

I’m not out of the woods yet: I’m supposed to taper off of the medications in about a month, but I have high hopes this time… though I’m a little nervous that the zits will come back just in time for my nuptials.

Has your impending wedding forced you to face any serious body issues?

I’ve had serious acne issues, too (though lately, it’s the worst on my back…), so it’s in my plan to go see a dermatologist in the next few months so I can get my back cleared up in time.

But yeah - I know that feeling - I remember when I first broke out and being teased about it in fifth grade. And I never grew out of it ;/

I don’t know about serious, but seriously annoying are my pores!!! As I get older (and, as you know, I’m old) they seem to get bigger. The size of saucers. So I’ve purchased a crap load of pore minimizing products that I’ve used for about three weeks now. They’re okay. I’m thinking I’ll just have to pile on the make up if they don’t get better.

Also, in high school I had acne and went through something similar as you. Not fun, but it ultimately worked. You look pretty in your pics, and if you have any zits, they’re not noticeable!

@Miss Perfume: Miss Perfume, have you tried Clinique’s Instant Pore Minimizer? I love it!

I used to have trouble skin, and even tried an (awful) prescription cream that stripped off layers of skin on my face — the doctor said the medicine was “looking” for a layer that didn’t break out, but really, I resembled a serious burn victim until I stopped using that cream!

The problems, though, have for the most part not been an issue since I started taking birth control pills. I’ve also recently learned I have rosacea, but it doesn’t affect my skin much — my eyes are the real target; however, I figured out how to keep it in check! :-)

Do you do the baking soda paste as a mask or a wash?

I am there with you. From the “it’ll pass” to the meds you’re on. I too took an oral antibiotic then used benzaclin and retin A at night (instead of differin). I use that routine to this day (minus the oral meds) and my face is clear. Hang in there! It works but you must stay consistent. Thanks for sharing this! Acne is embarrassing when you’re 12 or 40 and saying it’ll pass doesn’t help. I would have preferred to go to the dermatologist in my teens instead of in my 20s when the world was finally in agreement with me that my acne was bad. Unfortunately, some scarring remains.

@Shanna: I use it as a mask - I just mix it up in a little bowl till it’s a good consistency and slap it on for 10 min or so.

im so glad you blogged about this! ive had skin issues on and off since puberty too. ive also tried all the OTC and precription pills, creams, gels, BC, etc. my skin got much better in college and i thought it was over…but its resurfaced now that im in my mid-20s.

a year ago, my skin was manageable - far from perfect complexion, but a little bare minerals and some sun and i felt great. in the past few months my skin has gotten way worse. i dont know if its the stress, various new products ive tried, my diet, or what, but its been driving me mad. i wish i couldve taken serious action months ago…but months ago it wasnt so bad.

my wedding is next week. all i can do now i keep doing what im doing, relax, exercise, eat well, and hope that my makeup artist is as great as she was during the trial! i have to keep reminding myself that my FH LOVES this face, I’ll look beautiful becomes I’m me, and everyone there will appreciate that. really, skincare goes beyond the wedding and pressure of having anything be perfect on that day isnt necessary. buts its an ongoing challenge, i guess.

so glad to hear you found something that works for you!

I started on acne treatments a year ago for the very same reason. NOTHING was working and I couldn’t get through it. But once I got on Differen, Nicodine (a 2/day pill), a prescription face wash and used Cetaphil, things have been SO much better! I also have had 2 chemicals peels over the last 8 weeks as a final Hoorah to get ready for my wedding (May 16) I’m glad the treatments worked for you too because it’s so distressing to be 28 with acne!

Your skin history sounds just like mine, I’ve tried everything and went to a derm in high school and college. I have an apt to see a new derm soon. I hope he has a remedy *crossing fingers*

@Miss Perfume: It’s definitely great. It doesn’t help treat them, but it does a great job of disguising them!

I’ve had acne problems since i was 10 til… well… 28. It SUCKS and i’ve tried everything including pills. Finally, my friend suggested I buy a Clarisonic (it’s like a sonicare for your face!). It’s amazing! It’s kind of pricey ($200!), but definitely worth every penny! It has a 30 day return policy if you don’t like it, but you should definitely try it! Highly recommended… my acne was seriously out of control now i’m clear! Plus, plenty of water and fiber really help too.

I made myself go to the dermatologist for the first time when I knew the engagement ring would be coming soon (who doesn’t want “surprise” engagement pictures with clear skin?). She put me on a nightly ointment and face wash, but I have been so inconsistent with the ointment that I don’t think it’s done any good.

How do you all stay consistent? I need to kick it up a notch to have clear skin by wedding day!

i was on accutane for 6 months, about 4 years ago. it was the ONLY thing that ever worked for my (back) acne. And I have had completely clear skin since then. It was like a miracle! The worst side effects I had were extremely chapped/peeling lips, and serious sun sensitivity. Good for you for seeing a doctor who gave some good advice, and sticking with your regimen!

I actually tried an antibiotic pill for acne, but since antibiotics can reduce the effectiveness of birth control it was a no-go for me. Topical products all the way!

I would have never guessed from your pictures that you had an acne problem! You look great!
