Mrs. Deviled Egg's Picture
Mrs. Deviled Egg, Pittsburgh Age and Occupation: 27, Public Relations Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Accounting Engagement Date: December 24, 2007 Wedding Date: May, 2009 Blogging Since: October 21, 2008 Venue: Historic auditorium and meeting hall in one of Pittsburgh's commuter cities About Me: I am obsessed with all things crafty, especially scrapbooking, knitting, jewelry-making & cake decorating. I also love being an aunt, wrapping presents, watching football (Go Steelers!), shopping at yard sales and consignment stores, procrastinating, singing and learning to play the guitar. When it comes to wedding planning, I'm excited about working on DIY projects and finding creative ways to stay under budget. Of course, nothing is more exciting to me than knowing that the wonderful Mr. Deviled Egg will be my husband.
About Mrs. Deviled Egg

We put off our honeymoon travel decision until just about a week ago. We weren’t really sure where we wanted to go or what we wanted to do, but we did have a few factors that impacted our decision:

  1. We aren’t beach people. Yes, we like the beach, but spending a week there isn’t really us. I guess we are more of an active couple, as opposed to the types who would lounge around on a beach chair and listen to the waves crash. I think I can handle the beach for maybe two days, and then I’m over it. Also, we are both very prone to sunburn. Mr. DE is poster child for proper sun protection, and I’m usually pretty good about using sunblock daily, at least on my face. I’m one of those people who burns if I stay out in the sun for a few hours, even when I’m wearing SPF 50. Deviled Eggs on the beach for a few days + direct sunlight = overcooked eggs!
  2. All-inclusive doesn’t really appeal to us. I know there are great deals to be had at all-inclusive honeymoon resorts throughout the Caribbean right now, but Mr. DE and I aren’t big drinkers. (And by not big drinkers, I mean I can count on one hand the number of times we’ve ordered drinks when we’ve been out and I’d still have a finger or two left over.) Combined with point #1 about not being super keen on spending a week at a beach, we just don’t think an all-inclusive beach resort is a wise way to spend our honeymoon. In a way, we’d feel like we were paying for others to drink.
  3. We wanted to go someplace we’ve never been before. We kicked around spending a week in Las Vegas, but Mr. DE went there for his 21st birthday. Together, we’ve been to Ocean City/Bethany Beach area and Chicago. We also considered heading out west to some luxury cabin resort, but we’ve both spent some time in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, etc., earlier in our lives.
  4. We were looking for a bargain. I’m not ashamed to admit it—we didn’t want to spend a lot of money on our trip.

So, considering these factors, we set out to plan a trip.

It was actually harder than I thought it would be to meet all of our criteria. The last thing I wanted to do was not plan something now, postpone to a later time, and then never end up going on a honeymoon.

We (okay, mostly me) did some research and came up with what seemed to be a perfect blend of all of our criteria: cruising.

The Swine Flu Hit Our Honeymoon Before I Had a Chance to Blog About It : wedding honeymoon Enchant Source

On a cruise, we can still enjoy a nice, Caribbean atmosphere without spending too much time on a beach. We would also have all-inclusive meals, but wouldn’t feel like we were getting ripped off, because alcohol isn’t included in the package. And, neither of us have been on a cruise before, so this will be an adventure we’ll experience together. I also like how we would get to visit three different ports with lots of activities and excursions to explore while on shore. Oh, and the cost? Very reasonable, considering everything that’s included: lodging, food, and some activities. It all fit right into our honeymoon budget.

We met with a travel agent and booked with Royal Caribbean. I think we made the decision to go after about two days of deliberation, which has to be some kind of record for me. Our cruise would take us to Key West, FL, Cozumel, Mexico, and Belize City, Belize, over the course of five nights.

That was, until the swine flu outbreak. Just over a week after booking, our plans have changed. Yesterday, Royal Caribbean canceled all Mexican ports for the immediate future, so our Cozumel stop is no more. We will now get an extra day at sea.

In a way, I’m glad that we will be avoiding Mexico and shouldn’t have to worry about the potential to get  Swine Flu on our honeymoon. But, I’m also a little disappointed that we will not be going to an alternate port. I guess I hoped they would redirect our cruise to another city or island. I’m hoping that we’ll find lots of fun things to do on the ship and won’t get bored during our now two days at sea.

But regardless, I’m sure we will have a great time. This is our honeymoon, after all!

Has the Swine Flu had any impact on your honeymoon plans? I can imagine there are plenty of May and June brides with Mexican honeymoon resorts or cruises booked. Are you changing your travel plans?

you will really enjoy the royal caribbean cruise!! there is SOO much to do–even just on the boat! In fact, our boat had an ice rink, a mini miniature golf course, and a rock climbing wall…on top of the normal pools, gym, and spa! The day we were at sea went by SOO fast! Enjoy!

I’m sorry they didn’t reroute you to the Grand Cayman Islands for a day, since that is a stop along some of the cruise routes - we took a cruise that stopped in Grand Cayman, Mexico, Belize, Honduras. We really liked Belize - they have cave tubing (which is fun, but the water can be a bit cold) and the Belize Zoo is really unusual (you can go in a cage and feed a jaguar by hand). Have a great trip!

We are keeping our late May Mexico honeymoon. Hopefully we won’t die… that would suck.

Im with professorbee- I’m surprised they didn’t re-route you (since you could see a new place, and they could charge $ for the excursions?), but I guess it was more about the “making a decision and having it stick”. Cruising is AMAZING. Belize? Yes please! I went there on a western caribbean cruise and it was LOVELY. Good luck, you’ll have a blast no matter what!

We booked our plane tickets to Mexico a few weeks before the outbreak - we’re not honeymooning until August, but we’re both a little worried and not sure what to do about our plans. I’m now wishing we were going on a cruise!

Hopefully the swine flu outbreak will die down. I fret about cruises because, much like planes, a few infected people can spread it fast…

just bring your antibacterial hand santizer, and you should be fine!

the fiance and i were going to honeymoon in cabo in late may. we’re most worried about the plane flight there and not necessarily being at the resort since there haven’t been any reports of swine flu in the area. traveling through the airport however scares me.

with the WHO raising the level from 4 to 5 now…it seems like we shouldn’t go anywhere for our honeymoon til it’s somewhat safe again. so bummed out right now.

We almost booked our honeymoon in Mexico. Since our wedding is also next month, I’m definitely glad that we ended up deciding on Punta Cana. However we have 4 cases of swine flu on UD’s campus that should be confirmed soon by the CDC. So, maybe I would have been just as safe in Mexico? Who knows. Enjoy your cruise!

Hurray, a cruise! Before I clicked on the jump, I thought, “this girl sounds just like me, she should go on a cruise!” My husband and I have been on two cruises and we. love. them. They are a wonderful value for your money, especially if you are not big drinkers.

Of your ports, my favorite was Belize City. I highly recommend the excursion we did, which was cave tubing. We went with a guide named Vitalino Reyes (http://cavetubing.bz) and he was wonderful. There are groups that go through the boat but they will be huge. With Vitalino we got a personalized experience, funny stories, and an informative nature walk. Oh the stares of envy from people with other groups as he hauled us through the shallow parts of the river…. Have fun on your cruise!

We switched from Riviera Maya to Montego Bay, Jamaica last night for our early June hm. I was bummed to lose a bit of $ doing it but glad that we made it work. I was mostly concerned about spending lots of $ to go to and AI resort that ends up operating at 10% capacity… closed restaurants, etc. Just seemed like it was too risky for us. I’m excited for Jamaica though.

First week of June we’re honeymooning in Cancun and Merida, which is right beside Cancun.

So far, we’re thinking we won’t cancel plans, but this stuff has me on edge and I’m Googling “swine flu Cancun” like crazy.

You are going to LOVE your cruise!

I’m sorry they are skipping the port and not replacing it with another one!! I guess it’s not as easy to schedule a new port of call for the cruise lines?

We’re kinda in wait and see mode at the moment. We are slated to depart for Playa del Carmen mid-June, so we have a few weeks before we have to make a final decision to change or go. We (and our friends at the CDC) think it will have died down by then….I hope so!!

I’m worried about a girlfriend of mine that’s honeymooning (starting Monday!) in Cabo. She says she’s still going… I hope everything works out alright. I, for one, am happy we picked Maui!

Are they compensating you in any way for taking out a stop in your cruise? If not with money, then something other then that? I hope something, like cruise points or whatever they do. I am sure your going to have so such a great time though you won’t miss a thing!
