I Have Issues (Part 3)

April 30th, 2009 @ 12:28 pm by Mrs. Mary Jane

We’ve talked about a few of my more minor issues… but the biggest issue for me to face is one that affects every aspect of my health: my eating habits.

[source]

I’m a pretty healthy person in a lot of ways. I don’t smoke, I’m not a big drinker, and I try to make it to the gym 3-4 times a week. I do pretty well at watching my caloric intakes and I generally keep my weight within 10 lbs of a healthy range for my height.

So what’s the issue?

Well, I really do not like healthy food. I don’t like fruit, and I don’t like vegetables. I can tolerate a lot of different types of fruits and veggies, but I do not like them. I only eat them out of guilt and obligation. I don’t think I’ve ever craved or looked forward to eating a piece of fruit, at least not in the last 20 years. I don’t even like fruity desserts (pies, tarts, and jelly-doughnuts make me wanna ralph).

I laugh out loud when I read a magazine or online article telling me that fruit and yogurt are excellent replacements for candy and sweets, or that a delicious bowl of berries will quench a sugar craving. (I hate berries and I’m not a fan of yogurt either. Seriously. I’m losing my appetite (current craving: cake) just thinking about strawberries.) I don’t like melon, I’m not a big fan of citrus, and it would take a worthy bribe to make me eat a pear. The only way I’ll eat a banana is with lots of peanut butter on it. (There has to be more peanut butter than banana - it helps keep the nasty banana-flavor at bay.)

You have no idea how unappetizing this looks to me. [source]

What about vegetables? Well, I do like salads… with lots of cheese and dressing and croutons piled on. I like fresh tomatoes… on my nachos. (I know that’s a fruit, but whatev.) Carrots are probably my favorite veggie, but again, I’m not shouting from the rooftops, “I WANT A CARROT!” or anything. I can easily tolerate broccoli and asparagus, but you won’t catch me anywhere near a squash or a cucumber.

My parents were/are always big veggie and fruit fans. First of all, it’s their job as parents, but second, they actually like the stuff. My dad loves fruit, and my mom has been known to eat Brussels sprouts (Willingly! by choice!) for supper. When I went to college, I didn’t eat many healthy things at all. Why would I? I was free from parental control! But now that I’m older and on the verge of marriage, I see more clearly that I really need to make healthy choices now to prevent health problems later. But all I really want to eat is pizza, cake, nachos and ice cream. Ever my partner in crime, Mr. Mary Jane feels the same way. Far too often, we eat popcorn and candy for supper. In the summer, it might be Blizzards and sodas. Sometimes we have Perkins fried “App Sampler” for breakfast with an Oreo milkshake and a slice of chocolate or peanut butter pie. We’re bad. :D

This is much more my style. [source]

As with my other issues, I feel like my wedding is a good catalyst to make a positive change in my health. It’s not THE reason, but it’s a great, solid date to have as a goal. A wedding is the creation of a family. Though Mr. Mary Jane and I live life as a family already, our family will become reality on our wedding day. We owe it to each other to take good care of our bodies and invest in our future well-being. We want to grow old together. And while we’re not planning to have children soon, it’ll be easier to be positive role-models for them in the future if we don’t have to make drastic changes in our attitudes about food after they’re born. Change comes slowly, but I’ve made a few strides in improving our diets:

  • We take a multi-vitamin. I know we’re not getting our daily allowance of some important vitamins and nutrients, so this helps.
  • When I go to the store, I buy fruits and veggies. And we eat them - we don’t let them sit and rot for a week. Even if some of our salads are just lettuce and dressing, and even if our “fruit” for the day consists of one Cutie split between the two of us, it’s still a step in the right direction.
  • I bring some of that healthy stuff to work. And I make myself eat it for lunch.
  • We don’t eat out as often as we used to. We eat lunch at work 3-4 times a week, only going out once or twice. For dinner, we eat at home at least 5 days a week. Even if we don’t have healthy stuff in our packed lunches or home dinners, it’s still often less greasy than eating out. We save money this way, too.
  • When I cook at home, I try to be health-conscious. I use less butter or oil than directed. I use low-fat milk. I not to over-cheese things as much as I once did. (But, but, I LOVE cheese!)

These are baby-steps, but it’s a positive change. I’m not overweight, but I know that my calories aren’t coming from the right places. I also know that if I were a healthier eater, my workouts would be more beneficial to my body. My overall body makeup would probably change for the better, too. (Great for my wedding-day look!) And, it would help my acne stay away too.

Are you using your wedding day as an excuse to make positive changes in your life?

This whole post made me starving. I also hate veggies- and I’m a vegetarian. I’m working on it, but sometimes all I want is to go to the Food Court at the mall, get a cheese on a stick (at hot dog on a stick) and a soft pretzel with butter and salt (and a cheese dip). Okay, okay, ALL I want is to eat dinner at the mall.

Good luck, and congrats on the baby steps!

Do you like soup?
That might be an easy way to get your veggies in without realizing it.
You can make a super-easy chicken soup with canned broth (or just boil chicken bones in water), celery, carrots (yay! ;) ), and maybe mushrooms. Or throw in a tomato for pizzazz.
I love creamed vegetable soups. Asparagus soup, artichoke soup, tomato soup, carrot (!!) soup,… there’re a lot of veggie soups out there!
If you want any recipes, just pm me! Most of these soups are really straight-forward to make (they take about 1-2 hours to make - ready for the dinner table).

Are you a meat-atarian? That’s what my brother calls himself when my parents try to force him to eat vegetables and/or fruit. :)

In all seriousness, though, good job on trying to eat healthy! Hopefully you can keep it up!

Good for you for making the change! It’s hard work, but well worth it. How do you feel about dried fruit? Eh? I’m pretty sure dried mango is the greatest food in the world- it might be worth giving it a shot to up your fruit intake! Good luck!

This post has made me hungry. I can’t relate to not liking fruits and veggies, but I am using the wedding (and future family) as a reason to make some lifestyle choices. I’m exercising more and taking daily vitamins and counting calories.

Do what i do - I sneak veggies into as much as i can. If you are making tacos at home, cut up a bell pepper or jalepeno, or throw that and some onion in the food processor, and throw it in with your ground lean beef or turkey. If you are making spagetti, you can do the same w/ carrots and celery in the food processor, and throw it into your sauce. Those sauces have a lot of added sugars, so it helps balance that out, makes them thicker but not chunky (i hate that), and better for you. If I’m making leftover rice from say, take out indian or chinese food, when i reheat it, i’ll do it on the stove and add frozen peas. Not a lot, but enough to get some extra veg! if you sneak it, it’s not as bad.

if your fav foods are pizza, cake, nachos and ice cream, why not just make healthier versions of them? The pizza and nachos are easy…

Pizza: make your own dough, load it up with sauce and tons of veggies, and put just enough cheese so that it will taste delicious to you. You can have your pizza and eat it too!

Nachos: Instead of using those bad for you chips, buy some Joseph’s wraps or pitas and put them in the toaster oven until nice and crispy. (or reg oven) Top with black beans (NOT refried beans), fresh tomatoes, a little dollop of sour cream and a little cheese. Much healthier version!

I had to pick my jaw up off the floor when I scrolled to that sampler pic. That’s what you eat for breakfast?? OMG. I am so jealous because I would balloon like a puffer fish! (I’m a fan of cold pizza, but that for breakfast=FATSapphire, LOL!!) If I were you I’d just drink V8!

Haha. I am the opposite. I love my fruits and veggies. Like, LOVE. I am having carrots right now. :-) So what’s my problem? He hates them, like you. And I hate going through the motions of preparing a delicious and nutritious dinner if he’s going to pick around it and have a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios afterwards. I hate cooking for myself, so I have been making dinners he likes. Like….tacos. With just meat and cheese. If I try to put lettuce on his, he’ll either just leave it on his plate or try to sneak it onto mine. He also drinks a lot of soda (my drink of choice is either water or skim milk, I hate soda). I am nervous that if we have kids, I won’t have his support with their healthy eating habits. Yes, I think about this. How can I tell my kids, “No soda!” if their father is sitting right there drinking it??

My fi hates fruit! I think its totally weird. He’ll eat berries and bananas, and anything that has been cooked - he loves apple pie, cherry pie, etc. He hates pineapple though…in any form. He will tolerate it in pineapple upside down cake, but that is it. He’s only started to eat salads within the last month, but only with bleu cheese and bacon.
You should totally check out Jessica Seinfeld’s book on disguising fruits and veggies. Also try making some of your favorite junk foods in healthier ways - I make a killer mac & cheese that has pureed sweet potatoes in it. I also love tacos with sweet potatoes - they are seriously delicious.
What about eating more things that have a tomato sauce, like pasta and pizza? (I make whole wheat pizza from scratch - its surprisingly easy.) You could probably even make the tomato sauce yourself and add vegetables and mushrooms to it to beef up its nutritional contents.
I have a few friends who deep fry their vegetables - breaded and deep fried zuchinni or eggplant is fantastic, and you could try baked versions for a little less fat.
Also, I highly recommend the Yoplait yogurts that taste like Boston Creme Pie or cake or whatever if you are looking for a way around a sugar craving.
They say the healthier you eat, the more you crave healthy foods? I’m guessing based on your experiences that this isn’t exactly true?

I’m with you on this one! I do enjoy fruits and veggies to some extent, but have never been one to trade up my frozen pizza for a well-rounded meal. AND, get this, I DEVELOPED AN ALLERGY to many fruits and veggies I once enjoyed. Carrots used to be a favorite, but I can no longer eat them. I used to snack on apples and PB, but now apples make me vomit. I can have fruits and veggies, but they have to be prepackaged, frozen, or baked in many cases. This is ok, but it was hard enough to get me to eat them before! :(

Do you like different juices that come with a couple of servings of fruit in them? That might help. I don’t necessarily crave fruit over stuff like cake or cookies, but I do enjoy it and my veggies.

We are definitely trying to eat more fruits and veggies also. We both like fruits and veggies so that great but I have a major major sweet tooth. And in no way, shape, or form is fruit a good substitution for candy. I love candy! Dang…now that song’s stuck in my head.

I’m pretty good with fruit (NOT baked fruit though, such as in pies, EVER. Sick…ew). Veggies are a different story. I like lettuce, corn, raw carrots and the occasional slice of cucumber. That’s it. Oh…is a potato a veggie? Because if they are I like those too.

I was scarred from vegetables as a kid because my dad would FORCE me to eat them. It just wasn’t a good method for me. I don’t really have any tips for you, but I definitely understand where you’re coming from. I also have these grand visions that I’m going to start working out, so you’re already ahead of me in that respect. Good luck with your changes!

Wow. You pretty much, to the WORD, described my exact eating preferences. I don’t like fruit. Don’t like veggies. Will tolerate some…but never, EVER crave them. The idea of yogurt (ewwww) kills me…and is made worse by the idea of adding fruit. :-) Makes me feel better to know there are people like me out there! If it were up to me, we’d serve corn dogs and mac and cheese at our wedding!

I know you said that you’re pretty good at watching your caloric intake (I’m not) but I dont know how you can eat more than once a day is you’re eating all that (tastes so good but so bad for you) food. I read somewhere that 1 slice of pizza equals the amount of calories you’re supposed to consume in an entire day! Made me feel major guilt after my 2 slices and wings for dinner.

The wedding sparked something in me too that wanted to make sure i was on a healthy path before starting a family. I’ve been going to the gym/exercising 4-5 times a week but I still have my ice cream and girl scout cookies. I’m weak- if its in the house, chances are I’ll eat it. But its a work in progress right?!

Have you tired V8 splash juice? It’s very yummy and has a few servings of fruits & veggies packed in. or smoothies? sometimes its more the texture than the taste that turns people off of foods. Just tell yourself you’re having a milkshake.

My fiance hates vegetables, too. He will eat spinach, the tops of brocolli, and raw tomatos. I’ve gotten him to agree to cooked pureed tomatoes (as it’s the texture he has an issue with), but it’s tough! We’re both overweight, and try to watch what we eat, but with both of our weird dietary restrictions AND personal tastes.. well, it gets complicated.

Go MJ! It takes a lot of will power to buy and then eat the healthy things you think are gross :)
I’ve started eating healthier too… I LOVE me some carbs, but I’m really trying to cut them out of my diet. Unless we’re taking corn tortilla chips or corn tortillas… those I eat ;-)

Way back in the day (like, through my early-mid 20s, before meeting Mr. Editrix), I did all sorts of bad stuff. Smoked cigarettes. Ate crappy food on a regular basis — my favorite dinner was either mac ‘n cheese with cut up hot dogs mixed in, or a BIG bowl of mashed potatoes, homemade with LOTS of butter (like, half a stick). I didn’t hate fruits and veggies but I didn’t eat them much either.

Somewhere along the way, stuff changed. Cigarettes became gross. I became a gym rat and eventually became a group exercise instructor (I still am now!). The diet was last, and I only got good/consistent at that when I had to cut back on my teaching schedule and gained 13 lbs. as a result. (Too many chocolate croissants.)

I started doing Weight Watchers and dropped all the weight. Now I am a certified fruit and veggie freak! But don’t think I don’t still love the junk food. We’ll always have a special love for each other and we still go out on dates every now and then, we’re just not committed anymore :-)

I guess what I’m saying is … everyone always says, “You’re so healthy, you’re so skinny,” but the point is it took me a long time to get there and it definitely wasn’t easy. I now have extra motivation with the wedding coming up (and honeymoon, because I wanna rock my bikini!), but I couldn’t imagine trying to change the person I used to be, to the person I am now, just over the course of the few months where I’ve been planning the wedding.

i’m a super taster, have you ever heard of it? i was tested by my doctor. I have a hard time eating fruits and veggies, just like you. i hate anything bitter, which cuts out a lot of healthy stuff! (ie broccoli).
its so nice to hear of another person who eats like me! i’m also not overweight but i constantly feel pressure from friends and family to eat better b/c of empty calories.
good luck!

Have you tried the Sneaky Chef cookbook series? There are books for kids and picky husbands. The recipes take classics that even the pickiest palates enjoy and sneak in veggies and fruits. I personally love fruits and veggies so I don’t have to sneak them into my diet (call me crazy but I’d take a perfectly ripe peach over a slice of overly sweetened frosted cake any day!) but I have heard frustrated moms and wives rave about this series, so it might be worth a shot!

Oooh, I love junk food too. My favorite food probably has to be french fries, probably with something bad on them like cheese or ranch.

But when I eat too much junk, I get a craving for good food, greens and fruit. Seriously. I’m happy to see your wedding as a catalyst for positive change and hopefully you can develop a taste for something healthy!

Lonna- I’m a supertaster too. Olives and mushrooms are totally gross to me, and forget about celery. Disgusting!

I’ve always liked fruits and veggies, but I like them all the more when I’m eating them on a regular basis. I start to crave them if I don’t have them. So sometimes pushing through and doing what you don’t love has the unintended consequence of helping you love it.

This post cracked me up. I would live in a cotton candy machine if it wouldn’t make my hair so sticky.
I don’t lovelovelove veggies (I do love fruit) but over the years I have made myself get the required daily intakes. I’m a 15 year vegetarian (at 26 years old) and have struggled with what I should and shouldn’t be putting in my body over the years.
I gained, like, the freshman 50 when I left for college and went on the, um…ALL carb diet.
I’ve since slimmed down a bit and do everything that I can to cook meals at home (it’s always healthier to eat stuff that you make because you know what’s in it…).
Good luck on your healthy food crusade. May the best entree win…

I eat my veggies and my FI is good at eating his. but, since I moved out of my mom’s house, I’ve found I like a lot more veggies. Why? Because it’s not overcook and southern style boiled into mush. It’s amazing how much more paletable squash, zucchini and asparagus are when they are that mushy thing filled with seeds. And not out of a can. canned asparagus- even the smell is nauseating.

Maybe try bribing yourself with dip/toppers?

Grillable veggies? dip into a garlic/butter sauce.
Raw veggies? A ranch dip conduit
Apples topped with soft cheeses

I like peas mixed into my pasta.

I think it’s so funny how much you hate fruit! I was going “Oh yummmmmmm” looking at that picture you posted, and trying to decide if I’d scoff the kiwis or strawberries first. In fact, when people ask me how I stay slim, I tell them it’s because I eat fruit for lunch everyday. I don’t tell them that I’m only eating it because I LOVE it, not because it’s healthy! I used to buy a 12-pack of plums and eat six of them for lunch for two days running, at my old work.

@Miss Rye Bread: Uck - not a big soup fan, though I will eat the OCCASIONAL veggie soup. My fave is Tortilla soup… which does have beans (which i like) and corn in it, so that’s SOMETHING… Mr. MJ isn’t a fan of most chunky soups.. the two of us mostly eat ramen or tortilla soup ;).

@BA: Ick, dried fruit. :( The only dried fruit I can tolerate is raisins, and they’re not awesome healthwise (though they are compared to say, a bag of chips I suppose).

@aja0829: I’m counting calories too! ;)

@Miz K: I do that from time to time (never tried carrots, etc in spaghetti sauce though - neat!). We don’t like it when we actually take a bite of what might be a veggie though!

@rhodeygirl: I promise I’m not trying to be snarky here, but both of those options you described sound just awful to me and I know Mr. MJ would think I was playing a horrid joke on him if I cooked it! The idea of veggies on pizza is making me want to barf… and forging tortilla chips and loads of delicious greasy cheese would completely ruin the point of eating nachos! (But seriously: thanks very much for your suggestions. I really hope they help the less-picky people out there!!)

@MightySapphire: We don’t eat that one in particular - and what we do eat we share, and less than once a week. ;)

@TheEditrix: Thanks for your input. It’s good to know there’s hope. My mom’s very healthy and does actually not like junk food. I’m almost AFRAID to be that way because I really enjoy a good snack and I’d hate to no longer enjoy them!!

@edb and @Lillindy: Again, sadly… we don’t see the point of trying to masquerade a healthy thing as a bad one. We really don’t like tomato sauce even, and put the least amount possible on pizza (we order ‘half the sauce’ even when we get it at restaurants, otherwise we often think it’s icky). I also really dislike yogurt. It’s a texture thing. hmph. As for juice… I like orange juice ok… With grenadine and tequila in it!!!

@tatrifon and @MissCamera: I spend a lot of time at the gym, I don’t eat nearly as much of this stuff as I’d like to, and I also skip meals, another no-no. Oh and I really don’t like V8 splash; it’s totally ugh.

@TheEditrix: Yeah I hate smoothies too, ’cause I hate berries. The only reason I like the oreo milkshake is that it has COOKIES in it! lol.

@Gilneas: Mr. MJ and I definitely each have our issues with food too, and what we will and won’t eat. It’s a process but we’re making positive ground. Good luck to you!

@lonna: Yeah apparently eating bad stuff in moderation is still bad even if it doesn’t show on the outside. I didn’t know there was such a thing as a super taster - very interesting! I would love to tell people “yeah I only eat junk and sugar - it’s a MEDICAL thing”. :D

@thriftsiren: I’m off to amazon to look it up as soon as I finish replying to all of you guys, thanks!

@mary-alice-me: I crave activity when I don’t exercise for a few days, but I don’t crave greens/fruits.

@Lauren: I’m glad! I was worried about doing this series ’cause it’s not really “weddingy”. For weight: fitDay is awesome: keeps my calories in check. I try to stay at 2000 or less. For weight loss, 1600. I do this by being a really bad person - skipping meals and eating tiny portions of bad things (instead of big portions of good things). lol. Also, I’m really tall so I can fluctuate 10-20 lbs without changing clothing sizes. A blessing and a curse.

@googleLiz: peas in anything is a mortal sin to me! lol. I really hate grilled veggies. Ranch with carrots is oK but I don’t like other veggies with it (and I possibly like carrots without ranch better). Same goes for apples - i just ate one a few minutes ago - better without the cheese. But peanut butter on bananas - that’s a definite bribe of mine. “Hmm i want peanutbutter. Damn that means I have to eat a gross old banana.” :)

@Ruby Slippers: You’re my hero. I’m seriously jealous of you.

Here’s hopin’ you all grow to love fruits and veggies!

BABY STEPS?!!? Are you kidding me? I’m so proud of you! Yes, you should try to eat healthier, but I’m a hypocrite! I eat so bad Miss MJ. I have a passion to bake - cupcakes especially so naturally I’m a cupcake monster and at this very moment I have a ginormous bag of hershey’s dark chocolates in my work drawer. I had strawberries for breakfast though, and like you, I had to force them down. =( Good luck to us both!

I think people who shout their love of fruits and veggies from the rooftops can give sugar/grease fiends the wrong impression–most people that I know who eat healthy love it for the satisfaction and contendedness of good health, the increased energy, the brighter skin, the general sense of well-being etc etc etc, but there are plenty of us (**raises hand***) that really don’t like them, but use those practical feel good benefits as motivation to force those fruits and veggies down! I have really developed a love of cooking over the last couple of years, and it has really helped me to learn HOW I like certain veggies and fruits, and that motivates me to eat more of them. Broccoli raw? No thanks! Broccoli roasted in the oven with cracked black pepper and a squeeze of lemon juice and olive oil? Crispy, salty goodness. The longer you do it, the better it is. Go MJ!

i find i can’t eat sweets in moderation. if i give up all sweets for like a week, the fruit starts to taste good and i love it. but if i start eating candy things then my tastes shift. After thinking about this my goal is to go one week with no junk food (starting tomorrow - tonight is my birthday party) you might find like i do you can change your taste buds! Ad if that sdoesn’t work there are these berries that make bitter things taste sweet! (i am basing this statement on an episode of CSI) but i hear they are great for dieting!

I also really like this series. I have made big leaps in bettering myself for the wedding and it makes me feel good to know that other people think about this and do this stuff too. I quit smoking, lost weight and am eating healthier. It is not easy, just recently I thought it was weird that I bought a big chopped fruit bowl from costco and I throw the fruits in my cereals or smoothies every morning. A year a go you would have to pay me to buy that fruit and years before that I would not even tough multi grain bread and now I barely eat bread. So strange but worth it!

I don’t do too bad at eating healthy(ish) meals, but my snacks usually consist of potato chips dipped (yes, dipped) in mayonnaise. I’ve been eating edamame instead of my usual artery-clogging fix. But, of course, I put enough salt on them that they may as well be potato chips.

@Lexatron: haha, that’s me and broccoli. “Is it still healthy if it has enough cheese and butter on it to give a small dog a heart attack?

I like fruits and veggies, but to be honest, if given the choice of home-cooked food (super healthy or not!) and going out…I would totally go out every night.

I CRAVE fast food. I know it’s horrible for me, but I can’t help it.

My FI is worse than me, though. If i buy chips ahoy, they’re gone in a day. He eats ice cream for every meal if I’m not home, and puts mayo on EVERYTHING. I made a delicious pot roast (with veggies that I will actually eat)…and he covered it with mayonaise and texas pete. What the hell?!

@FlipFlopBride: hahaha Yeah oreos and 1lb bags of peanut butter cups rarely last 48 hours in our household. But Mr. MJ is not solely to blame for that! :D

this sounds very familiar. i wanted to try and be better about our eating habits. It has kind of worked now that we live together on our own (can buy our own food) so we don’t eat out as much. but i haven’t really been using the wedding to make healthy changes. My life is ust too insane right now to worry about 1 more thing. Maybe after the wedding once life slows down…i will think about making some chnges and sticking with it.

I’m totally on the same page, Miss MJ! FI gets annoyed with me at times when it comes to my eating habits (not that he’s a poster child for healthy eaters, either! ;D). Like lonna said, I’m a “super-taster”, too. I figured it out when I was 10 or 11. There was an experiment in a kids’ science mag that was meant to calculate the number of tastebuds you had on your tongue. Basically you take a square inch of wax paper, punch a hole in the middle, put it on the tip of your tongue and fill in the hole with food coloring. Then you count the number of large raised dots and (sorry, but I don’t remember this last part very well) multiply that number with something else and that’s how many you have. My brother and sister and I did it together. They both had something like 3 or 4 in the hole and I had over 10 or 11!

good steps, but i wonder if they’re sustainable… :(
