About Mrs. Mary Jane

I Have Issues (Part 3)

April 30th, 2009 @ 12:28 pm by Mrs. Mary Jane

We’ve talked about a few of my more minor issues… but the biggest issue for me to face is one that affects every aspect of my health: my eating habits.

I’m a pretty healthy person in a lot of ways. I don’t smoke, I’m not a big drinker, and I try to make it to the gym 3-4 times a week. I do pretty well at watching my caloric intakes and I generally keep my weight within 10 lbs of a healthy range for my height.

So what’s the issue?

Well, I really do not like healthy food. I don’t like fruit, and I don’t like vegetables. I can tolerate a lot of different types of fruits and veggies, but I do not like them. I only eat them out of guilt and obligation. I don’t think I’ve ever craved or looked forward to eating a piece of fruit, at least not in the last 20 years. I don’t even like fruity desserts (pies, tarts, and jelly-doughnuts make me wanna ralph).

I laugh out loud when I read a magazine or online article telling me that fruit and yogurt are excellent replacements for candy and sweets, or that a delicious bowl of berries will quench a sugar craving. (I hate berries and I’m not a fan of yogurt either. Seriously. I’m losing my appetite (current craving: cake) just thinking about strawberries.) I don’t like melon, I’m not a big fan of citrus, and it would take a worthy bribe to make me eat a pear. The only way I’ll eat a banana is with lots of peanut butter on it. (There has to be more peanut butter than banana - it helps keep the nasty banana-flavor at bay.)

I Have Issues (Part 3) : wedding diet health Badhabi04

You have no idea how unappetizing this looks to me. [source]

What about vegetables? Well, I do like salads… with lots of cheese and dressing and croutons piled on. I like fresh tomatoes… on my nachos. (I know that’s a fruit, but whatev.) Carrots are probably my favorite veggie, but again, I’m not shouting from the rooftops, “I WANT A CARROT!” or anything. I can easily tolerate broccoli and asparagus, but you won’t catch me anywhere near a squash or a cucumber.

My parents were/are always big veggie and fruit fans. First of all, it’s their job as parents, but second, they actually like the stuff. My dad loves fruit, and my mom has been known to eat Brussels sprouts (Willingly! by choice!) for supper. When I went to college, I didn’t eat many healthy things at all. Why would I? I was free from parental control! But now that I’m older and on the verge of marriage, I see more clearly that I really need to make healthy choices now to prevent health problems later. But all I really want to eat is pizza, cake, nachos and ice cream. Ever my partner in crime, Mr. Mary Jane feels the same way. Far too often, we eat popcorn and candy for supper. In the summer, it might be Blizzards and sodas. Sometimes we have Perkins fried “App Sampler” for breakfast with an Oreo milkshake and a slice of chocolate or peanut butter pie. We’re bad. :D

This is much more my style. [source]

As with my other issues, I feel like my wedding is a good catalyst to make a positive change in my health. It’s not THE reason, but it’s a great, solid date to have as a goal. A wedding is the creation of a family. Though Mr. Mary Jane and I live life as a family already, our family will become reality on our wedding day. We owe it to each other to take good care of our bodies and invest in our future well-being. We want to grow old together. And while we’re not planning to have children soon, it’ll be easier to be positive role-models for them in the future if we don’t have to make drastic changes in our attitudes about food after they’re born. Change comes slowly, but I’ve made a few strides in improving our diets:

  • We take a multi-vitamin. I know we’re not getting our daily allowance of some important vitamins and nutrients, so this helps.
  • When I go to the store, I buy fruits and veggies. And we eat them - we don’t let them sit and rot for a week. Even if some of our salads are just lettuce and dressing, and even if our “fruit” for the day consists of one Cutie split between the two of us, it’s still a step in the right direction.
  • I bring some of that healthy stuff to work. And I make myself eat it for lunch.
  • We don’t eat out as often as we used to. We eat lunch at work 3-4 times a week, only going out once or twice. For dinner, we eat at home at least 5 days a week. Even if we don’t have healthy stuff in our packed lunches or home dinners, it’s still often less greasy than eating out. We save money this way, too.
  • When I cook at home, I try to be health-conscious. I use less butter or oil than directed. I use low-fat milk. I not to over-cheese things as much as I once did. (But, but, I LOVE cheese!)

These are baby-steps, but it’s a positive change. I’m not overweight, but I know that my calories aren’t coming from the right places. I also know that if I were a healthier eater, my workouts would be more beneficial to my body. My overall body makeup would probably change for the better, too. (Great for my wedding-day look!) And, it would help my acne stay away too.

Are you using your wedding day as an excuse to make positive changes in your life?

This whole post made me starving. I also hate veggies- and I’m a vegetarian. I’m working on it, but sometimes all I want is to go to the Food Court at the mall, get a cheese on a stick (at hot dog on a stick) and a soft pretzel with butter and salt (and a cheese dip). Okay, okay, ALL I want is to eat dinner at the mall.

Good luck, and congrats on the baby steps!

Do you like soup?
That might be an easy way to get your veggies in without realizing it.
You can make a super-easy chicken soup with canned broth (or just boil chicken bones in water), celery, carrots (yay! ;) ), and maybe mushrooms. Or throw in a tomato for pizzazz.
I love creamed vegetable soups. Asparagus soup, artichoke soup, tomato soup, carrot (!!) soup,… there’re a lot of veggie soups out there!
If you want any recipes, just pm me! Most of these soups are really straight-forward to make (they take about 1-2 hours to make - ready for the dinner table).

Are you a meat-atarian? That’s what my brother calls himself when my parents try to force him to eat vegetables and/or fruit. :)

In all seriousness, though, good job on trying to eat healthy! Hopefully you can keep it up!

btw this is coming from a crazy candy lover, too. If I could have cookies and cake for breakfast every day, I would!

Good for you for making the change! It’s hard work, but well worth it. How do you feel about dried fruit? Eh? I’m pretty sure dried mango is the greatest food in the world- it might be worth giving it a shot to up your fruit intake! Good luck!

This post has made me hungry. I can’t relate to not liking fruits and veggies, but I am using the wedding (and future family) as a reason to make some lifestyle choices. I’m exercising more and taking daily vitamins and counting calories.

Do what i do - I sneak veggies into as much as i can. If you are making tacos at home, cut up a bell pepper or jalepeno, or throw that and some onion in the food processor, and throw it in with your ground lean beef or turkey. If you are making spagetti, you can do the same w/ carrots and celery in the food processor, and throw it into your sauce. Those sauces have a lot of added sugars, so it helps balance that out, makes them thicker but not chunky (i hate that), and better for you. If I’m making leftover rice from say, take out indian or chinese food, when i reheat it, i’ll do it on the stove and add frozen peas. Not a lot, but enough to get some extra veg! if you sneak it, it’s not as bad.

if your fav foods are pizza, cake, nachos and ice cream, why not just make healthier versions of them? The pizza and nachos are easy…

Pizza: make your own dough, load it up with sauce and tons of veggies, and put just enough cheese so that it will taste delicious to you. You can have your pizza and eat it too!

Nachos: Instead of using those bad for you chips, buy some Joseph’s wraps or pitas and put them in the toaster oven until nice and crispy. (or reg oven) Top with black beans (NOT refried beans), fresh tomatoes, a little dollop of sour cream and a little cheese. Much healthier version!

I had to pick my jaw up off the floor when I scrolled to that sampler pic. That’s what you eat for breakfast?? OMG. I am so jealous because I would balloon like a puffer fish! (I’m a fan of cold pizza, but that for breakfast=FATSapphire, LOL!!) If I were you I’d just drink V8!

Haha. I am the opposite. I love my fruits and veggies. Like, LOVE. I am having carrots right now. :-) So what’s my problem? He hates them, like you. And I hate going through the motions of preparing a delicious and nutritious dinner if he’s going to pick around it and have a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios afterwards. I hate cooking for myself, so I have been making dinners he likes. Like….tacos. With just meat and cheese. If I try to put lettuce on his, he’ll either just leave it on his plate or try to sneak it onto mine. He also drinks a lot of soda (my drink of choice is either water or skim milk, I hate soda). I am nervous that if we have kids, I won’t have his support with their healthy eating habits. Yes, I think about this. How can I tell my kids, “No soda!” if their father is sitting right there drinking it??

My fi hates fruit! I think its totally weird. He’ll eat berries and bananas, and anything that has been cooked - he loves apple pie, cherry pie, etc. He hates pineapple though…in any form. He will tolerate it in pineapple upside down cake, but that is it. He’s only started to eat salads within the last month, but only with bleu cheese and bacon.
You should totally check out Jessica Seinfeld’s book on disguising fruits and veggies. Also try making some of your favorite junk foods in healthier ways - I make a killer mac & cheese that has pureed sweet potatoes in it. I also love tacos with sweet potatoes - they are seriously delicious.
What about eating more things that have a tomato sauce, like pasta and pizza? (I make whole wheat pizza from scratch - its surprisingly easy.) You could probably even make the tomato sauce yourself and add vegetables and mushrooms to it to beef up its nutritional contents.
I have a few friends who deep fry their vegetables - breaded and deep fried zuchinni or eggplant is fantastic, and you could try baked versions for a little less fat.
Also, I highly recommend the Yoplait yogurts that taste like Boston Creme Pie or cake or whatever if you are looking for a way around a sugar craving.
They say the healthier you eat, the more you crave healthy foods? I’m guessing based on your experiences that this isn’t exactly true?

I’m with you on this one! I do enjoy fruits and veggies to some extent, but have never been one to trade up my frozen pizza for a well-rounded meal. AND, get this, I DEVELOPED AN ALLERGY to many fruits and veggies I once enjoyed. Carrots used to be a favorite, but I can no longer eat them. I used to snack on apples and PB, but now apples make me vomit. I can have fruits and veggies, but they have to be prepackaged, frozen, or baked in many cases. This is ok, but it was hard enough to get me to eat them before! :(

Do you like different juices that come with a couple of servings of fruit in them? That might help. I don’t necessarily crave fruit over stuff like cake or cookies, but I do enjoy it and my veggies.

Speaking from experience, the Flinstone chewable vitamins with Iron are delish :) I mean why do kids get to have all the fun?

We are definitely trying to eat more fruits and veggies also. We both like fruits and veggies so that great but I have a major major sweet tooth. And in no way, shape, or form is fruit a good substitution for candy. I love candy! Dang…now that song’s stuck in my head.

I’m pretty good with fruit (NOT baked fruit though, such as in pies, EVER. Sick…ew). Veggies are a different story. I like lettuce, corn, raw carrots and the occasional slice of cucumber. That’s it. Oh…is a potato a veggie? Because if they are I like those too.

I was scarred from vegetables as a kid because my dad would FORCE me to eat them. It just wasn’t a good method for me. I don’t really have any tips for you, but I definitely understand where you’re coming from. I also have these grand visions that I’m going to start working out, so you’re already ahead of me in that respect. Good luck with your changes!

Wow. You pretty much, to the WORD, described my exact eating preferences. I don’t like fruit. Don’t like veggies. Will tolerate some…but never, EVER crave them. The idea of yogurt (ewwww) kills me…and is made worse by the idea of adding fruit. :-) Makes me feel better to know there are people like me out there! If it were up to me, we’d serve corn dogs and mac and cheese at our wedding!

I know you said that you’re pretty good at watching your caloric intake (I’m not) but I dont know how you can eat more than once a day is you’re eating all that (tastes so good but so bad for you) food. I read somewhere that 1 slice of pizza equals the amount of calories you’re supposed to consume in an entire day! Made me feel major guilt after my 2 slices and wings for dinner.

The wedding sparked something in me too that wanted to make sure i was on a healthy path before starting a family. I’ve been going to the gym/exercising 4-5 times a week but I still have my ice cream and girl scout cookies. I’m weak- if its in the house, chances are I’ll eat it. But its a work in progress right?!

Have you tired V8 splash juice? It’s very yummy and has a few servings of fruits & veggies packed in. or smoothies? sometimes its more the texture than the taste that turns people off of foods. Just tell yourself you’re having a milkshake.

My fiance hates vegetables, too. He will eat spinach, the tops of brocolli, and raw tomatos. I’ve gotten him to agree to cooked pureed tomatoes (as it’s the texture he has an issue with), but it’s tough! We’re both overweight, and try to watch what we eat, but with both of our weird dietary restrictions AND personal tastes.. well, it gets complicated.
