Mrs. French Bulldog's Picture
Mrs. French Bulldog, Orange County Age and Occupation: 28, Administrative Assistant & Interior Design Student Fiance's Age and Occupation: 28, Purchasing Analyst Engagement Date: November 8, 2008 Wedding Date: August 2009 Venue: Bernardo Winery About Me: I've lived in Atlanta, Dallas and Laguna Niguel; although I've lived in Orange County, CA most my life, I'm a Southerner at heart. I work full time for a Commercial General Contractor (aka my father) and I go to school for Interior Design at night. I love modern design, music, wine, crafting, DMailing, my family, my Westies, and of course, Mr Frenchie! Mr Frenchie and I met 3 years ago on Match.com and have been best friends ever since. I love his "old soul" and how he laughs with his whole body, among many other things. We are planning our summer wedding at the winery near his hometown, just 45 minutes south of Orange County.
About Mrs. French Bulldog

Before Mr Frenchie and I were engaged, we used to throw around ideas about where to get married. Very early on in our relationship we talked about The Labradors’ city of Savannah, GA. Like I said, I’m a Southern girl at heart, I was born in Atlanta, GA, and used to visit my family just outside Baltimore, MD once a year. We dreamed of a wedding with “Southern Romantic Charm”, in a beautiful location such as this.

Look familiar?

But, alas, when it came down to it planning a wedding across the country, in a city neither of us had ever been to, while we both worked full-time and while I was in school, just wasn’t realistic.

This was about the time we realized we probably shouldn’t plan a destination wedding, even if it was still in CA. That crossed Napa, Los Olivos, and Camarillo off the list.

And a venue of a completely different nature, The Del Marcos Hotel, in Palm Springs, CA. Along with loving all things with Southern charm, the Frenchies love Mid Century Modern. Mr Frenchie discovered this hotel while looking for places to take his best friend (and now Best Man) for his Rat Pack-themed Bachelor party, when he was getting married. Mr Frenchie and his Best Man, B, are all about modernism. Mr Frenchie and my first date was the weekend after he and B had gone to Modernism Week.

After deciding against the destination wedding, we started looking at venues closer to home.

Option 1 - The Orange County Museum of Art

Honestly, I got this idea when a good friend of mine said she was considering the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art as a venue, so part of me wanted for forget this idea just in case she decided to have her wedding at the San Diego Museum. She won’t be getting married until 2010 (law school smarty, waiting ’til she graduates), and I don’t want to steal her wedding thunder.

We didn’t end up going with this location, because, sadly, the city no longer allows them to do weddings. (However, they are still listed on Here Comes The Guide, so maybe they are permitted again.)

Option 2 -The Sherman Library and Gardens

This location is only 2.5 miles from option #1, and both are 15 minutes from my office. I pass The Sherman Library and Gardens every day on my way home from work. This is a very popular wedding venue in my area, and you can see why.

Source

The problem we saw with this location was the ceremony site. If we decided to get married at the venue, instead of my church (a high possibility), it looked like our ceremony would have fountain in the middle of it.

Source

No thanks!

Option 3 - Park Ave Restaurant - Stanton, CA
Mr Frenchie discovered this restaurant while looking for 1950s/’60s modern restaurants on the web. We thought it looked so cool, and I took him there for his first birthday we celebrated together.

Like the Del Marcos in Palm Desert, this place has that mid-century modern style that we love.

Source

Plus, the food was FANTASTIC! I really cannot say enough good things about Park Ave. This place was a top contender for quite sometime, that is until we figured out our guest list, which came to about 170 people. In order to fit all our guests in this location, not everyone would be in the same room, or some people would be outside, while others would be inside. Mr Frenchie and I were heartbroken.

Mr Frenchie grew up in San Diego, and his father and Best Man still live very close to his hometown. We go down to San Diego at least once a month to visit FFIL Frenchie, his Best Man B, or to hang out in a number of our favorite places. One of those favorite places is The Bernardo Winery.

Source

While dating we went here a couple times for wine tasting, and to walk around the grounds.

Source

I may have mentioned it to Mr Frenche as a wedding venue once before, but it didn’t sink in for Mr Frenchie until we visited the winery after B’s wedding this past October. There was another wedding that day, and Mr Frenchie looked at me and said, “We should get married here!” Since we weren’t engaged yet, I just smiled and agreed, and we went on with our day.

Come November, when we were looking around, Mr Frenchie was pushing for this location, hardcore. I had trouble reaching their coordinator, Annie, and when I finally heard back, the only available dates in August were Fridays and Sundays. I really wanted a Saturday wedding, so we kept looking. The weekend after Thanksgiving, Mr Frenchie and I spent the whole weekend driving all over Orange County and San Diego being disappointed by venue after venue. We were pretty depressed with our options, and were considering going outside our comfort zone to Temecula, in order to find a venue.

Thank God, when I got home there was an email from Annie letting us know a Saturday in August had opened up, and to get back to her ASAP if we wanted it. That Monday, my first phone call was to Annie to snatch up that day, and that is how we decided on our venue.

Our guest will arrive and head down Zinfandel Walkway, to Rosario’s Pavilion (on the left).

Source

Inside the Pavilion, our ceremony will take place at Rosario’s Gazebo.

Source

Our Cocktail hour will take place under this covered area, and the reception will be on the grass.

Source

Were you disappointed that a venue you loved couldn’t accommodate all your guests? Did you try to pare down your list or did you move on to a different venue?

Just wanted to say that Baltimore is the mid-Atlantic, and not the south. And is nowhere near Georgia, unless you consider an 8-14 hour drive “close”. Sorry, but we are constantly being called the “south” by folks from NE and the “north” by people from GA, and I don’t understand why nobody is like “oh wait - Maryland is in the middle!”

We loved the second venue we looked at! :)
It was on the water, perfectly embodied the southern charm we were hoping for, and it had an AMAZING built in bar, not to mention the views were to die for!
Unfortunately they couldn’t accommodate our numbers for both ceremony and reception so we had to continue our hunt and I’m glad we did. :)

Your venue’s beautiful! And you looked at some really diverse, also gorgeous places!

We’re lucky, because the F.U.E.L. House can actually accommodate far MORE than our guest list…so we won’t feel squeezed at all. :-)

I love the Del Marcos hotel! And Mid-Century Modern? I heart you. :) I’m so glad luck was on your side and you got the Saturday you wanted.

@edb: As a northwesterner, I always associate anything south of the mason-dixon line as “the south” which to me would include anything south of Baltimore :). I get it though. People thing Seattle is right next to Alaska.

You’re going to love the winery wedding!! I did tell you my parents live like, two blocks from the winery, right? I also know the family that owns it! Do you have a band set yet? I’m sure they can provide some good recommendations, as I used to play in a band with the owner’s son in high school ;)

@Option 2

Beautiful! Our venue is a courtyard area and it has a fountain in the center as well, haha…we’re still trying to figure out how we’ll work that

@Miss Burgundy: I had no idea your parents were that close! Mr Frenchie’s Dad live across the street near the Inn. I do have a band, but thank you so much for the offer :)

It’s SO beautiful! I love that you’re able to have specific sites for each part of the wedding–from ceremony to cocktail hour to reception. Are you going to use tents?

And about this Southern debate: I’m a Southern girl, raised in Atlanta. I now live in DC, which people seem to think is the South (it’s not). My fiancee is from Baltimore, which other people still seem to think is the South (it’s not). The Mason-Dixon line doesn’t seem to hold water any more. I’d say the south begins in Richmond!

But you can BE Southern anywhere! :)

Your venue looks so gorgeous, a winery wedding was on our list as well, but we opted for something closer to the ocean, which seems to be much more representative of FH and I (we love to surf, and swim) Plus La Jolla is where we met, so it is only fitting that we get married there. P.S. I love the museum, and though I am sure your friend would not have minded if you had your wedding there, I think your venue is so nice, and it sounds like Mr. Frenchie is really happy about it to, which is important

that happened to me on so many occasions… so many places i loved would only hold around 100 and we were expecting 150-200!

@UrbanLeo: Thank you :) No, we wont be using tent… I don’t think they are allowed, but even if they were the space really isn’t big enough for a tent. To provide more shade we are renting umbrellas from the venue.

I love the venue you chose! That first picture you posted is a great location for photos. And I’d also have nixed the fountain one - how odd is that! Who wants a fountain in your aisle??

I’m looking in the Long Beach area and parts of Orange County and uggggg it’s frustrating, I can’t find anything that calls out to me. Our friends got married at the Long Beach Museum of Art and it was great but their rates went up and it’s just way more then I want to spend.

I love the winery…it’s just gorgeous out there! So nice to find a place that you can have your ceremony and reception in the same place!

This “south/north” argument is the reason no one from the south or north wants to claim the people of Baltimore…

I am confused, isn’t the Mason Dixon line the border between Penn. and Maryland, which would in fact make Maryland the “south” right?

All the locations are beautiful. Can’t wait to see how your wedding takes shape.

As for the south, it can be explained like this. If you’re from the north (say Delaware and up) everyone below is from the south. Only people from “the south” really know the difference. We New Yorkers just know you’re not from here and you sound southern. Period.

@UrbanLeo: I also live in DC and since I’m from NY, I say this is quite the south to me! It’s all up to perspective I guess!

@edb:

Actually Maryland is considered the South, we just don’t have many Southern traditions like Atlanta and other Southern States. Also Ms. MightySapphire, I am not sure what you mean by your comment, but Maryland does claim Baltimore and I LOVE Baltimore :)

Also I love the Southern Charm themed weddings you have sooo many options!!

I’d recommend not going quite as southern with the food if you’re doing a southern themed wedding in CA…no offense to Miss Laborador, but her menu sounded pretty unappealing to someone who hasn’t had much southern food in their life !

Oooo, I like the venue you picked! And trust me, it’s hard planning a wedding just 4 hours away from our host city, let alone across the country! I think you made the right choice (even though it was a hard one).
