About Mrs. Cowboy Boot

We’re Kindred Spirits!

April 30th, 2009 @ 10:29 am by Mrs. Cowboy Boot

Yes, Mr. Cowboy Boot and I are kindred spirits, but I was actually referring to J.Crew. It seems they’ve embraced my color scheme in their summer collection. Or… maybe I subconsciously started seeing these colors around, gravitated towards them, and selected them. You’re right, J.Crew’s summer colors were probably just a coincidence. Either way (hehe), head to their homepage and you’ll see elements of peach, dusty rose, gold, cream, and pinks.

It got me thinking… maybe I should look beyond their traditional bridesmaids dresses and take it down a notch? Would a gander through their more casual, seasonal collection hurt?

Score! I found numerous dresses in coordinating colors. Albeit, a few of them were too casual, but at least four could work well together. I’m seeing this as a collaboration of numero uno, numero dos, and numero tres! It’s not too stringent and also allows me to not let go of the reins completely. The girls could pick from these dresses and, if they found one similar elsewhere, they could run it by me. Or, if they were still stuck on Sarah Seven, they could order a custom dress through her in a coordinating color.

We're Kindred Spirits! : wedding bridesmaid dress Tearose Pique V-Neck Ruffle Dress ($78), cotton pique, in Tea Rose

My only worries with this one: 1) Is it too casual? I’d need to see it in person although it looks like it could get dressed up. 2) The Tea Rose looks so bright on the bridesmaid dresses. Is it the fabric or the internet that’s making it more palatable here?

We're Kindred Spirits! : wedding bridesmaid dress Papayap Embossed Cotton Printed Lorelei Dress ($170), textured cotton, in Papaya

This is my favorite of the bunch. I liked the printed Whitney when I tried it. This just happens to be more in our color scheme.

We're Kindred Spirits! : wedding bridesmaid dress Lightsh Silk Chiffon Twist Tank Dress ($170), silk chiffon, in Light Shell

This is one of their bridesmaid dresses, yes, but I think it’s a nice, lighter color for girls who don’t want something so salmon-y and bright. Plus, there are three styles to choose from.

We're Kindred Spirits! : wedding bridesmaid dress Metalli Metallic Linen Strapless Dress ($148), metallic linen, in Rhubarb

Linen, like the pique cotton, might be too casual. This is another must-see-in-person dress. It looks like I’ll be making a trip to J.Crew tomorrow, which means there’s something in store for you too! Pictures of these dresses in person. Sort of.

Hopefully this idea pans out. It’s getting a little overwhelming not finding something I’m psyched about. I would be psyched, however, to have the girls find a dress they really like. Oh, and I would’ve included the silk taffeta dresses here (the new papaya is cute, and the barely peach would be perfect) but those dresses didn’t quite fit right (more on that to come) and the fabric felt like the odd one out in this lineup.

Did you let your girls choose their dresses, but put certain criteria on their choices? What was your criteria?

I think they are all fabulous choices! It seems like every dress could be dressed up with killer heels and some nice baubles. A pinned updo would look great too. Good find!

I have the first dress. Great summer dress, but too casual for bridesmaid dress.

Hi there, love these dresses as well! The first one is cotton so it may be a little too casual. I love the second one! A friend just ordered it in brown and it is so flattering. Just to warn you though, it is featured in this months People Style Watch so it may sell out quickly!

Just as a quick warning–pretty much all of J.Crew’s “fancy” dresses are not in their retail stores and are only available online or through the catalog. It’s my biggest gripe with them, especially when you want to see the fabric (or just try them on!) before purchasing.

Ooo, the third one down is my favorite! And, I think it would complement YOUR dress — style and fabric — really well!

I’m letting my girls pick their dresses, and I have full confidence everything will look great together!
The only criteria I gave them was that the color had to be within our palette (ranging from browns to reds to purples), and it had to be knee/tea length. That’s it! If one girl wears plaid, the other flower-prints, and the other solid, that’s fantastic! I think the mix patterns and materials look great together. It’s not like guests are going to come up to the bridesmaids and say, “hey! her dress is linen, but hers is silk! a-ha! they’re not actually bridesmaids!”
I have faith everything will come together nicely (ditto for your BMs dresses, too!)

I like this idea, pinks blend so nicely. I too noticed J.Crew’s online colors look different int he bridesmaid collection v. the summer collection (in my case navy) on the website so I’m interested to see what you think in reality after seeing both. I also wanted to remind you that linen looks nice but wrinkles so easily and this could be a problem for photos.

I had my gals just choose a black dress from JCrew, which worked out nicely. They were all able to find dresses they liked AND get them on final sale, which was great. gesture is right though, for the most part, it seems like they don’t carry the “fancy” dresses in stores. Their return policy is good though (as long as it’s not a final sale item), so you might be better off buying and returning what you don’t want.

I bought the silk chiffon dress for a wedding and I absolutely LOVE it. It’s so flattering and pretty (kind of made me want to swirl around all night). I just bought another one in the light pink, can’t wait to wear it again!

I too LOVE the printed one!
My sister bought the last one for a wedding we’re going to next month… I think you may find it a bit to casual, but she got it in a print, so I may look fancier in the solid :)

I said: “Make it yellow, and love it.” That was it! I don’t care what shade, what cut, what silouette. I want my MOH to feel beautiful!

I let my girls know that I was in taffeta and wanted them in a dark red/burgundy, ankle length dress. And left it at that.

They emailed back and forth and ordered something from JC Penny that had a bolero, cause they wanted sleeves.

ooh pretty. I have been wondering if you had decided on your dresses yet. I have been following your post because I am struggling with my Jcrew choices too, but find myself going back because of the colors. I actually purchased the first dress for myself and returned it because it was too low cut. Just a heads up in case you have any full busted maids.
I love the printed one. I am using their yellow colors and was thinking of having my brides maid wear the solid and my maid of honor wear the printed.

keep us posted!
