We’ve talked about a few of my more minor issues… but the biggest issue for me to face is one that affects every aspect of my health: my eating habits.

I’m a pretty healthy person in a lot of ways. I don’t smoke, I’m not a big drinker, and I try to make it to the gym 3-4 times a week. I do pretty well at watching my caloric intakes and I generally keep my weight within 10 lbs of a healthy range for my height.
So what’s the issue?

After finding the perfect shoes, I was so excited for my first fitting earlier this week. But it ended with the seamstress storming out of the room, and me fighting to hold back tears. And this coming Monday, I’m scheduled for my second first fitting — prior to this, though, I need some advice from the hive. Okay, let me explain further.
Mama Bruschetta came along — Sister Bruschetta, my matron of honor, was unavailable (but we figured she wouldn’t miss much at this first visit). I first met with Cindy, the alterations consultant, who helpfully advised me on my undergarment issue — a topic for another post (in the near future, I promise!). Cindy then helped me into my gown (making me extremely happy, as evidenced by my grinning mug, below) and told us the seamstress would be in soon.
~~~ White dress ahead, Mr. Bruschetta! You don’t wanna see this yet! ~~~
Reader fatebeliever813 is selling 12 silk flower centerpieces in glass cylinder vases. The flowers are ivory gerbera daisies with chocolate centers, and a spray of deep burgundy/brown wildflowers for color. There is a deep sage green/olive green ribbon around vase. Make her an offer!
I never wanted to be one of those high-strung, whining, stressed out people that you felt nervous being around. I always thought of them as weak, annoying wimps who couldn’t take control of their own lives. Harsh–yes, but I’m just being brutally honest! However, as much as I hate to admit it, I think I’m becoming one of them. How do I know this? Well for starters, my body is telling me so. My jaw is sore from clenching, I’m starting to have major stomach problems, and my upper shoulders are so tense that I had to visit the chiropractor for the first time (And not just for a massage!). I will say over and over again, “I’m fine! Really, I’m okay. I’m in control.” But my body is angry at my denial. It’s wagging its finger at me and saying that I need to lie down and deal with my issues.
Here are some ways I’m preparing to help de-stress and detox my suffering brain and body:
Call it stress, hormones, aging, or whatever, but my skin has been freaking out lately. Overall I have to say I’ve been blessed with good skin. I never had terrible acne as a teenager. If anything, it is worse now than it was back then. However, sometimes my skin will be great, and then suddenly it just switches personalities and starts to break out, get bumps, dry spots, or is just icky. My skin is very sensitive to my stress levels, that time of the month, and weather changes.
I’ve been following all of Lo’s posts, but I paid close attention to her recent post on Recession Proof Skincare. Over the years I’ve splurged on different products from Clinique, Laura Mercier, and a few others. However, lately as we budget for getting married, the extra money just is not there for some products I’ve relied on in the past. Lo’s post was a lifesaver, as I trusted her to recommend some great products that wouldn’t break the bank, and I could buy more than one product without feeling like I needed to only eat bread and water for a week to make up for it. I’ve decided to look at it from the perspective that I really need to step my skincare up a notch to make a deposit in my skin for many years to come. And of course, I want that beautiful bridal glow on my wedding day!
Yes, Mr. Cowboy Boot and I are kindred spirits, but I was actually referring to J.Crew. It seems they’ve embraced my color scheme in their summer collection. Or… maybe I subconsciously started seeing these colors around, gravitated towards them, and selected them. You’re right, J.Crew’s summer colors were probably just a coincidence. Either way (hehe), head to their homepage and you’ll see elements of peach, dusty rose, gold, cream, and pinks.
It got me thinking… maybe I should look beyond their traditional bridesmaids dresses and take it down a notch? Would a gander through their more casual, seasonal collection hurt?
Score! I found numerous dresses in coordinating colors. Albeit, a few of them were too casual, but at least four could work well together. I’m seeing this as a collaboration of numero uno, numero dos, and numero tres! It’s not too stringent and also allows me to not let go of the reins completely. The girls could pick from these dresses and, if they found one similar elsewhere, they could run it by me. Or, if they were still stuck on Sarah Seven, they could order a custom dress through her in a coordinating color.
Pique V-Neck Ruffle Dress ($78), cotton pique, in Tea Rose
My only worries with this one: 1) Is it too casual? I’d need to see it in person although it looks like it could get dressed up. 2) The Tea Rose looks so bright on the bridesmaid dresses. Is it the fabric or the internet that’s making it more palatable here?
As of my “Who Scheduled Hurricane Season on My Honeymoon” post #2, we were leaning towards somewhere a little ‘closer to home’… this location tentatively being Western Mexico. It was priced right, had great resorts and gorgeous beaches, and since it’s located on the Pacific side, it is supposedly ‘outside’ of the hurricane zone. Plus, I love me some margaritas.
Check out the St. Regis @ Punta de Mita – In the words of Tina Fey, “I want to go to there…” (really really bad!!)
For starters, I should tell you that our “first look” wasn’t exactly the type of “first look” you typically see here on Weddingbee. We had our rehearsal dinner at our house the night before the big day (I will blog about it later… I’m still waiting on pictures from guests!), and the plan was for Mr. Dumpling to stay at a hotel with his family or friends. We live together, and we were just trying to be a little bit traditional. Ha! That kind of… well… never played out right. After all 50 guests left, Mr. Dumpling went out for drinks with his friends, but instead of going to a hotel, he just came home instead. Go ahead and laugh at us, ’cause yeah—we’re dorks like that.
So we woke up together the morning of our wedding and looked at each other and said, “OMG we are totally getting married today.” It felt like any other day, honestly.
I went to one bathroom to get my makeup and hair done, and he went to another bathroom and did whatever it is he does in the mornings to look gorgeous. We actually saw each other the whole time because I had a *tiny* meltdown over something on my dress, and he needed to calm me down. I remember sitting in my closet doing that inhale-exhale-cry thing (you know the kind… Elle Woods, Legally Blonde, in the restaurant…) and he came in there and said, “Follow me, let’s go.” We went to one of our guest rooms and he basically told me to calm down because we were getting married, and nobody would notice the big spot on my dress. Sweet little liar, isn’t he?
It worked though, and then the spot came off the dress. Life was good!
So, Susan of Up in the Air Somewhere sent me two designs of the bowl-basket and I decided to go with Option 1. I loved the ruffle/petal things, and she was right — it did remind me of my dress. I think I made the right choice.
In the year leading up to my wedding, I tried to take really good care of my skin. I got regular facials, and used them as a “reward” for going to the gym. If I went to the gym at least 4 times in a week, I’d treat myself to a facial. It was a good system, albeit pricey, but it got me feeling good for our wedding day. I’d check out the micro dermabrasion specials they’d occasionally run with longing eyes, wishing I could afford a series of treatments. But between paying vendors, and buying up every craft product known to man, I couldn’t really afford to plunk down the $1K for a series of sessions. Honestly, the facials were great and relaxing, the expensive products I would often buy were luxurious, but they both really didn’t DO much for my skin. I’m sure I got less acne, but past damage to my skin from sun and acne wasn’t really being corrected. To get that, I needed something deeper, but couldn’t justify the expense.
Even after the wedding, long after all the debts have been paid, I still wanted to try micro derm, but still couldn’t pull the trigger. A year of long work hours had left me a little haggard, and I finally thought it was time to treat my face to something… anything. I talked to my esthetician, and she said that I’d be a great candidate for micro dermabrasion, but that they carried a skincare line called Obagi Nu-Derm that a few women in her family had been using with amazing, longer lasting results. I told her my main goal was to be able to not wear foundation, and instead just use a light dusting of Colorescience Suncanny foundation, which I love, but doesn’t provide enough coverage for my uneven skin.
My issues: I don’t have “bad” skin. But I have far, far, far from “good” skin. I’m not prone to breakouts, but my skin is all-around uneven. I take decent care of my skin, wash with good products, and always use daytime products with SPF. Rather than just describe my skin to you, here’s a picture of me, raw-faced, 2 weeks ago on day 1, prior to any treatment (yes, crazy of me to post my face like this… but I’m seeing results, and am really excited about sharing it with you!).
Wow. I just totally posted a picture of my shiny-ass non made-up face. Wow.
Below are the THREE bags of bridal magazines B’s wife, L, passed on to me the day after their wedding. I was excited to reuse them, and Mr Frenchie was excited they were going to my house and not his. L and I have such different taste that it didn’t even matter that she had torn out her inspiration pages.
I have only purchased three magazines on my own because of this over-abundance of wedding porn!
Did you pass on your bridal magazines after your wedding, or did someone pass on theirs to you? How much do you think bridal magazines change from one year to the next?
I shared with you my adventures in the world of Not Biting One’s Nails…
Next up, let’s talk about acne.
It started when I was about 12. Everyone said, “Ooo, you’re becoming a woman! Don’t worry, it’ll pass.” So we bought the Oxy, the Stridex, the Clearasil, the Clean ’n’ Clear, the Proactiv… you get the picture. I tried toothpaste. Baking soda. Salt… basically any acne “miracle cure” touted by the latest issue of Seventeen. (I must say: A paste of Baking Soda and water on your blackheads does work, by the way. Do it for a week and you’ll see!) To top it off, I was a swimmer from 5th until 12th grade, so I even had chlorine supposedly working in my favor. Still, the zits persevered.
Remember the gorgeous green heels I (sadly) left in the Nordstrom shoe department? Well, as soon as I returned home from my failed shopping excursion, I clicked over the Nordstrom website, and searched.
A promising option appeared that I hadn’t seen in the store: “Devon”, by Glint, a peep toe slingback, in a variety of color options, including black, burnt orange, champagne, and silver. I decided on the champagne, but when I tried to select this color, it wasn’t available in the drop-down box.
Since I’d heard wonderful things about the customer service at Nordstrom, I visited the store to ask about the elusive shoes. With the help of an attentive salesman, I learned that… the internet was out of these champagne heels. Um, what?!
