This is, by far, the most difficult relationship I’ve ever been in. I’m okay with that. I’ve failed at relationships because I didn’t try hard enough, so I accept that getting along with someone — especially when you have my strong personality and he’s no doormat — is sometimes going to be frustrating and exhausting.
But boy, I didn’t realize it would be this hard. Nor did I realize that fighting well is definitely a skill, one in which I am still a struggling amateur. After a small thing turned into a very large blow-up last night, I had time to myself — alone in bed with the company of two dogs and a cat — to think about my fighting style.

I left off in Part 1 with me in dreamland, skipping down a yellow-brick road, a big binder overflowing with pictures in tow. Images of pink and white fluffy flowers (peonies, ranunculus, garden roses, oh my!) floated in my head as I headed off to my floral vendor meetings. I arrived, sat down and opened up my binder to reveal my inspirational pictures and organized list. I sat back and waited for my gold star when instead, I was given a swift kick, and just like that, I was thrown out of dreamland and into (sigh) reality.
Reality #1: Our chosen wedding date is after “pretty flower season”. And by pretty flowers, I mean peonies, ranunculus and garden roses. NOOOO! I knew that our early July wedding would be cutting it close, but c’mon people! We figured out a way to get a man on the moon… why can’t we figure out how to grow peonies in NYC in July!
Reality #2: Apparently we can. But they’re expensive. And by expensive, I mean way-out-of-the-budget-that-there’s-no-hiding-it-from-Mr. Latte expensive. So out the window go my beautiful pink peony and ranunculus bouquets, centerpieces and boutonnieres….and my broken heart.
Reality #3: The flowers that are in season and therefore much more affordable? Calla lilies, hydrangeas and roses. Now, I know that most brides would be jumping up and down at this point conjuring up new dreams of modern calla lily bouquets and poofy hydrangea centerpieces, but I guess I’m the anti-bride, because I’m not a big fan of… you guessed it, calla lilies, hydrangeas and roses. I know, I know… and I call myself a bride.
The look of shock, horror and disappointment must not have gone unnoticed because florist #1 told me that she may be able to get peonies for my bouquet, and my bouquet only.

While trying to be mindful of the Bruschetta budget, I’m also hoping to share custom letterpress invitations with our guests. Although these designs come with a heftier price tag than we’re willing to pay, I’m swooning nonetheless:

Back to the search for a honeymoon location without torrential downpours, because I don’t want to be like this bride:
So, after we nixed most of the faraway/exotic locations, we turned our search back around to find a place a little closer to home, so we wouldn’t have to spend a day (or two) on travel alone. We found a few islands that are reportedly outside of the ‘hurricane zone’.
Option #1: The ABC Islands –
… so I bought silver shoes for the wedding. Last July. And apparently, I don’t like silver sandals, either.
I liked them at first, but after trying them on with my dress again over the weekend, I just wasn’t crazy about them. Maybe it’s the toe thing? I’m not sure. Luckily, I ordered them from Zappos and have 365 days to return them.
There is just something about white and silver sandals that don’t agree with me. Especially those fitting into a very particular demographic:

You may have heard of groomstyle, but this is motherofthebridestyle…
I hate to brag, but my mom is a pretty cute little lady. She is short (like 5’1″) and skinny, and I have always been jealous of her for that (somehow, I got stuck with the taller and wider genes…no fair!). That being said, my mom is way too young, hip, and beautiful to be stuck in one of those stereotypical mother-of-the-bride dresses!

While she and my sisters were in town a while back, she tried on this dress from David’s Bridal and we all agreed that it was a contender for her wedding day attire.

I met Mary when she was temping at the non-profit I was working at in DC. She was really friendly, funny, and patient. When I was asked to coordinate a new program, the first thing I did was tell my boss he had to go upstairs and insist that the reception temp, Mary, apply for my old job. He did, and she did, and the rest is history. Mary and I worked with high school students for the Republics of the former Soviet Union. I managed 40 smart, but mischievous high schoolers, and she managed high school exchanges. We spent a lot of time together (we were a department of two), bounced ideas off each other, and had a few laughs. My students got themselves into plenty of trouble.
Although Mary was great at shuffling kids around and managing teachers from an array of countries, her true talents lay in the kitchen. I can’t tell you how nice it was to come in on Monday to Mary’s delicious weekend creations. The strawberry pies, the various curds, and oh, the beer and cheese bread! She always said she wanted to own a bakery. She doesn’t own one yet, but she’s working at a fabulous (a signature word of hers) one now. I’m so happy she’s getting to do what she loves. How many of us are that lucky?
When Mr. Joey first got engaged, one of the first things we knew was that we didn’t want cake. Mr. Joey doesn’t like cake and I don’t like it enough to make a case for it. Our original idea was to serve pies. Mr. Joey is a huge pie lover. He’ll eat any kind but pecan. Pie? Who makes pies better than Mary? So I asked her if she’d make us wedding pie, and she said YES!
I know what you’re thinking: aren’t we doing cream puffs?

So, I know that a fair amount of wedding attire is focused on the bride, but let’s give the grooms some credit here. Mr. D is tall and lean, which makes it surprisingly hard to find a well-fitting suit. We were entertaining the possibility of a bespoke suit, when we stumbled upon this website.
I can’t personally vouch for the fabrics and quality, since we haven’t been able to go in for Mr. D to be measured, or to feel the fabrics. What I can say however, is that this site is a lot of fun to play around with!
The choices are endless! Lucky for us, Mr. D and I seem to have similar suit tastes. You can customize practically anything. A Suit That Fits gives you tons of options to play with, such as the 2 or 3 piece suit, colored linings, vests, buttons, pockets - the list goes on!

The criteria for our wedding colors were that they were to be 1) earth tones, and 2) fall-ish. Now I know most people think reds and oranges, but I interpreted that to mean cool colors in the dark spectrum:
And I now present the colour palette: (Yes, that’s colour not color)
Yesterday marked a momentous occasion – we procured the marriage license! Mr. L picked me up on my lunch break and we headed over to the Travis Co. clerk’s office. I’ve noticed that some of y’all have county offices housed in beautiful historic buildings. The Travis Co. office? Not so much. It’s in an ugly strip mall next to a furniture store with a minuscule parking lot. No matter, 20 minutes and $71 in cash later we walked out with our official license. It’s good for 30 days (with a 3 day waiting period) so we are good to go.
Now that we’ve finally picked out wedding colors, I can start thinking about color details. I absolutely love the emerging trend of wedding shoes in the same hue as one of the wedding’s accent colors. Because deep red is one of our colors, I will be shopping for shoes similar to these:

Have you ever noticed that all my DIY posts are really about my mom DIY-ing? They should actually be called MDI (mom did it).
The latest project was the ring pillow. I actually helped a little this time. I wanted something like Martha’s (oh-so-ubiquitous) flower pillow (above), and played around with making the blossom.
When Mr. Cookie and I were in the throes of our long distance relationship — I was living in D.C. and Mr. Cookie was living in Denver — we would send each other mixed tapes. As I walked home from the Metro every evening, I always had my mixed tape playlist blaring on my iPod. One song that I listened to over and over again was Nora Jones’, “Come Away With Me”. There was something about the lyrics that really spoke to our relationship, and when Mr. Cookie and I were compiling our wedding playlist, we thought it would be the perfect song for our last dance. But more, the lyrics of the song summed up our wedding day.
