Computer Challenged

May 1st, 2009 @ 6:20 pm by Mrs. D'orsay

So… maybe it’s because I blog, or because I bought a Mac, or perhaps because both of my parents and Mr. D work with computers, that people tend to think I know my way around a computer. The reality? Not so much. Mr. D, web guru that he is, runs circles around me with his computer, and he and my parents laugh at me for my lack of computer savvy when I cry for help.

We’re getting ready to mail out the UK invitations, and thus have been researching fonts to address the envelopes with. Using With this Ring’s (aka Almost Anderson) fabulous faux-ligraphy idea, we plan to address these ourselves.

After visiting Dafont.com, UrbanFonts, and the like, I began to download a few fonts. If you, like me, don’t fully understand how to get from point A (see font/like font) to point B (effectively use the font), then this post is for you.

Basically, I had Mr. D show me several times how to use a font, and then I took a screen shot of the process. (Why yes, I did have to Google how to take a screen shot.)

After you download the font, you should double click the zip file to open (unzip) it. Then, open “Font Book”. If what you unzipped becomes a file, you should open the file and drag only the ttf (true type font), not the txt (text file) to Font Book. If it becomes an icon with the letter ‘A’ on it, then all you have to do is drag it into Font Book in the folder you’d like (in our case, “scripts”).

What font did we choose? Well… we haven’t chosen one yet, but we could certainly use your suggestions!

What are your favorite script fonts?

Monterey, which looks like “Feel Script” but is free! I used it on all our menus and table listings.

CAC pinafore is very cute and girly. Probably better for shower invitations, but still very cute!

Mac Junkie chiming in…I’ve found that the easiest way to install fonts, given that they sometimes come in “packages” of multiple files, is to use the “add fonts” option in the File Menu of Font Book. All you have to do is select the folder the font is in, or the font itself if there is no folder, and Font Book will install it for ya! This helps if there are, in fact, multiple font files.

you can also install fonts by ctrl-clicking (right click) on them and selecting “open with Font Book.” It will then give you the option to install.

Oh my…I just went through this headache at work a few weeks ago…not on a Mac though. Making fliers for events at work…I was totally not satisfied with our font selection…perfectionist me…

They all think I’m computer savvy, too.

I’d give a font preference, but I have a new one every day. I use Pea Weanie a lot on fliers…but only because the name makes me laugh. Totally not elegant at all.

I crush majorly on the free font that’s very similar to Feel Script — can’t remember its name right now — but want to go a slightly different route for our invites.

Oh, and I’m still not 100% sure how to take a screen shot and turn it into a jpeg for use in a blog post…so I hear ya on the quasi-tech-know-ledgey-ness ;-)

THANK YOU for posting this. I downloaded a font the other day and then was all, “what do I do now?” and I felt like a moron.

Favorite script-y/handwriting fonts:
Windsong
Zapfino
Unnamed Melody
Tracey
Susie’s Hand
Quilline Script
More Enchanted Prarie Dog
LanieDaySH
Freebooter Script

I don’t remember where they’re all from. I remember downloading a couple of font packets a few months ago when I was searching for a script for my invites. We ended up using Windsong.

The only script I 100% despise is Scriptina. Big Fat NO.

French Script MT is what I’m using on everything for my wedding. And it is also super cool because it is the font that my parents used on their wedding invites too!

we used bickham fancy for our script! Really elegant and lots of swirls. Looks like it’s from the 18th century, actually.

I used JoeHand2! For any Twilight fans, it was Alice Cullens handwriting!
