Mrs. Gloss's Picture
Mrs. Gloss, Boston/Maine Age and Occupation: 24, Designer/soon-to-be Architect Fiance's Age and Occupation: 26, Systems Engineer Engagement Date: May 23, 2008 Wedding Date: August 2009 Venue: SS Katahdin/Lakeside Tent About Me: I don't like nickels or the skin that forms on pudding when it's in the fridge for too long. I couldn't live without Pantone markers, fountain soda (3/4 diet, ¼ regular Coke), run-on sentences, or ridiculously oversized sunglasses. I will try to DIY almost anything and am just OCD enough to make most of it work. I am truly excited about having all my family and friends together, becoming Mrs. Gloss, and having amazing photos to prove it!
About Mrs. Gloss

Mr. Gloss is not going to be wearing a tux when our big day rolls around. It’s going to hot, and he does not deal well with heat. Plus he HATES, haaaates ’dressing up’. *Sidenote: He told me he would wear one and be happy in it if I wanted him to wear at tux… awww.* But it’s just as much his day as it is mine, and I want him to feel comfortable! We toyed with the idea of having him and the groomsmen wear suits for a while, but ultimately decided to have them wear navy blazers and khakis.

Garments for the Glossy Guys... : wedding menswear Boys
Casual, nautical and totally re-wearable! I think every guy should own a navy blazer. It’s like a perfect ‘Little Black Dress’ for boys.

Mr. Gloss was a little nervous at first, as he didn’t want it to look too “sailor-y”, as he called it. But, we found blazers with pewter colored buttons instead of the typical gold buttons, and he feels much better about it now (or, at least he says he does!).

Similar to the picture above, we bought navy ties for the guys. The groomsman tie is from Brooks Brothers and is pictured on left. We were going to have all the guys wear the same ties (including Mr. Gloss), but then I found the tie on the right at J.Crew, and started to think that maybe Mr. Gloss would want to have a different tie to stand out a little bit.

So, what should he wear??

Maybe see if Brooks Brothers has a variation of that tie perhaps with a slightly different accent color so that he stands out, yet looks like he belongs with the rest of the guys. As an aside I bought my honey that Brooks Brothers tie recently.

We’re doing this too! Yay for khakis and navy jackets!

The photographer in me would want some more color in the ties. To be fun, I’d suggest each guy pick out a tie that reflects his personal taste or personality. For more continuity, the original suggestion is best, all groomsmen with a single tie and the groom with a slightly different style.

Although I love Brooks Brothers, the J. Crew tie is my my style.

We’re going for suits over tuxes as well! I would just be hesitant to have everybody in horizontal stripes. For ours, all the ties are in the same color family, but the guys get an all-over pattern while my groom gets the diagonal stripes.

I have a question about this look- do you 1) just ask the guys if they have a navy jacket and khakis and have them wear what they have; 2) Make them buy matching jkts and pants so that they are all similar; or 3) Some other combo?
I think it looks great, but am curious about the etiquette.

@Krista: Fortunately none of the guys already owned a navy blazer (we wanted them to match match). I hunted for the perfect blazer and we snatched up IZOD blazers for only $80 ea after coupons. We are also going to ask them to buy pants (they regularly go on sale at JCrew for like $20-$30). I’ve never rented a tux before but I’m assuming they go for around $125 - and since we are keeping the cost under that I feel like they can’t really complain. Plus, they get to keep the clothes!

At least he’s willing to wear a blazer. FI is convinced that wearing bright Hawaiian shirts is the only acceptable attire for a beach wedding. (no offense to anyone doing this…but God help me…)

@FlipFlopBride: Oh man! Maybe you can suggest a nice light tan linen suit? (with a hawaiian shirt underneath if he won’t give up?)

I’d be happy if he just wore a simple guayabera and khakis. We have a year to talk it out. He’ll break eventually. I compromised just by accepting the beach idea!

Thanks Miss Gloss! We’re in the pre-engagement phase, so I just like to bookmark pages with cute ideas and kept seeing this. When you think about it, it costs as much as the tux, and then they have something afterwards. Good luck with the planning!

My guy doesn’t have a lot of preferences, but he definitely wants to stand out from the groomsmen! I think most guys probably feel this way.

Oh, I agree on the navy-blazer-as-dude’s-LBD — and it fits your nautical theme so well!

Maybe have Mr. Gloss wear a solid-colored tie? That would DEFINITELY stand out from the GMs stripes — especially if it’s yellow ;-) or something similar!

And love the last survey question…definitely giggled at that when I read that!

@Miss Bruschetta: I was thinking of something more yellow, but got nervous he would freak out if I asked him to wear yellow - turns out he doesn’t hate it as much as I thought he would!

We just got married last weekend and we had the guys wear khakis and navy blazers. We went with one tie for the groomsmen and another for my husband. They all looked great!

I love that j.crew tie, and I’m a big fan of doing something just a little different for the groom!

I like the statement that a good suit for a guy is like a little black dress for a girl! I’m gonna use that one!
