Napkin Quilt

May 1st, 2009 @ 11:00 am by Mrs. Beagle

I love fabric, thread, and sewing… of course, you already know that from this post. And because of this, I follow quite a few sewing and fabric blogs. Several months ago, I came across this beauty:

Napkin Quilt : wedding diy reception Wedding030

Napkin Quilt : wedding diy reception Wedding031

source

Yum. The quilt is from a pattern in Joelle Hoverson’s book: Last Minute Patchwork & Quilted Gifts. It was created from cloth napkins Jen sewed for her beautiful outdoor wedding. If it looks familiar, her wedding was featured Winter ’09 issue of Martha Stewart Weddings (and it is blogged about here).

As soon as I saw this, I knew I wanted to use this in our wedding. As crazy as I may be for sewing 200+ napkins… I love this idea. If our guests don’t end up taking them home, I know they will be put to good use in our home as napkins (it’s eco-friendly) :) or re-purposed into a wedding quilt, like Jen’s. I am still debating on what pattern I want to use for the napkins (there are lots of tutorials out there, which I will be sure to post), so I haven’t started sewing them yet. I have already bought the fabric though… so you can be rest assured that part II of this post is soon to come!

Are you renting, buying, or making your napkins? Will they be eco-friendly?

Awww, love the sentimentality behind this idea. If I were a guest at your wedding, I’d TOTALLY take my napkin home — but it’s great that you’ll be able to reuse any that are left behind! Can’t wait to see what the fabric looks like! :-)

I love that quilt as well! I thought about it briefly, but decided I was crazy to take on any more big projects… I can’t wait to see what your napkins look like!

I thought about making our napkins too! Until I found out that the ones we are renting are only 10 cents each! I decided I’d probably go nuts sewing 325 napkins, and I should just pay the 32.50 and keep my sanity :) Good luck, I’m sure yours will look wonderful!

@Miss Mascara: I think I would rent ours if they it would be cheaper, but it’s not. :( ($0.10 is a great price, btw!)

You go girl. I’m still planning on trying this one day soon. Thanks to your help before! I just need to find fabric. I found out there is a Joanne’s near me though.

That’s a great idea!!! Especially since often renting linens is so pricey! You could even buy fabric to make napkins and have guests names and table numbers embroidered on them. If the guests wanted them, they could take them, and if they didn’t you’d be left with plenty of napkins with which to make the quilt! What a great post!

Ours were not $0.10 either! We are making them, and by ‘we’ I probably mean my mom!

Okay, Miss Beagle…though I love all of the fabric ideas…you are fueling a really bad fabric obsession for me, too!

And I don’t own a sewing machine of my own yet! I have a stockpile @ grandma’s house (where I used to live) and am going through withdrawals not being able to sew. Doesn’t stop me from making plans and buying oodles of fabric, though!

I would love to do this…I love making quilts and I think that would be a great memory project!

I’m in love with that whole wedding. The quilt is just amazing, and I loved how they tied so much fabric and textile art into it. I don’t think it’s crazy of you to try - and it would be awesome to have the special fabric afterwards!

*swoon* I LOVE this wedding! I am so excited your doing something similar :) I hope you make the quilt, what a special wedding project.
To answer your question, we’re renting… the cost of linens is included in our catering contract. We actually have a LOT of colors to choose from, it is a little overwhelming. You just have me the idea to see if we can to alternating colors for the napkins.

I LOVE patterned napkins! That is why I chose to purchase sale napkins from World Market and Crate and Barrel. I was able to get them all for around $1.00 a piece. It seems like a lot, now that I think about it, I should have made them but it was fun hunting for great patterns and great deals. I plan on giving them away to some of the women that helped make the wedding work after all is said and done, so I am not too sad about the price since they are pulling double duty!

We’re using the venue’s napkins, but I’m trying to buy overlays for the tables. Hopefully I could resell them later!

ditto crab cake’s response. I soooo wanted to do this, but I’ve just run out of steam (err…..I mean time). I CAN’T wait to see how your’s turn out just so I can live through your napkins and quilt ;)

I am SO glad you posted this! I really, really wanted to do napkins like that, but everyone I know thinks I’m crazy. I am also finding it difficult to find really fun fabric when I don’t live within 3 hours of a fabric store!

LOVE the idea!
