The Silk Taffeta Trial

May 1st, 2009 @ 1:38 pm by Mrs. Cowboy Boot

Well, hive. After getting my lil’ heart set on J.Crew’s barely peach fall color, I ordered in a couple of their silk taffeta styles to try them on. My favorites were the Lorelei and the strapless Sangle, so I just picked whichever colors weren’t back-ordered and went for it. If I loved these dresses, I realized I’d be even more confused than I was before I posted about my three final bridesmaid dress options. If I hated them, well, then at least I could nix number one.

J. Crew’s new silk taffeta color for fall

Here were the results.

The Sangle dress was adorable from the front. This champagne color would actually make a good, short wedding dress option. The pockets made it really comfortable and the detail on the neckline was cute too.

Can we say mushroom butt? I mean, the high waist makes it look like your arse starts really high and bulges out. Hmmm….

I feel like I’m wearing a modern version of a big, 19th century French dress with the bum that sticks up and out really high.

Then onto the Lorelei. Again, cute from the front. Although, it doesn’t have a layer of netting under the silk taffeta like the Sangle, so it lies a little flatter (less mushroom butt!). But, I’m not really a fan of how shiny the silk taffeta photographs.

If you have your hands in your pockets, you get this little bubble above your bum where the pleats are.

See? Even my dog Rio thinks my butt looks weird!

I guess that means silk taffeta is nixed, which is already the case if I decide to go with the different dress option, since the fabric is so different from my other options. Thanks for listening to my J.Crew woes.

Were you disappointed about the fit of a bridesmaid dress you liked on the internet?

LOL at Rio!

Yes! I love the Jim Hjelm line, but NONE of them looked good on my girls — seven very different body types, so you think one would have work out! :-)

Miss CB, even though our weddings are pretty much total opposites (mine is a spring wedding in the city) but our taste is so similar and your posts are always inspiring to me! I’ve considered almost all of the same JCrew BM dresses, and I can’t wait to see what you finally choose! (I’m still searching hopelessly)

I think you should go for the chiffon-y materials because of the style of your dress!!!

Rio is so adorable!

A word of caution about the J. Crew strapless taffeta dresses — my FI’s sister wore one in a wedding last year, and by the end of the night, she and the other ‘maids had bruises from the incredibly uncomfortable boning! She was a bit nervous when I picked a J. Crew dress for my bridesmaids, but luckily the Sophia is very comfy :-)

Miss CB, I must have ordered 50 bridesmaid dresses from J Crew and I was disappointed in every fabric but the silk chiffon. Everything else looked pouffy in the wrong places. Good luck with the search!

I don’t think they look that bad! I picked a dress from Simple Silhouettes - Aster. A little on the expensive time but I obsessed about my girls being able to wear them again. I wanted to do light blue to match my colors better but opted for Navy silk shantung (less shiny) so they could wear them again. Here’s the address to my dresses in the right color too: http://www.simpledress.com/collection.php?page=aster.

That picture with your dog is hilarious! It’s like he/she knows what you’re thinking!! I don’t think these dresses look that bad either, but I prefer the Lorelei. I think you have to be really skinny (like you or the models on the J.Crew website) to pull off this kind of “bubble butt” dress.

Mushroom butt, indeed! I think Rio likes it, though. I really like both dresses. With the green one, the problem of the poofy pleats is unlikely because, well, would they really be walking around with their hands in their pockets?

Rio is too cute!
My girls never really got to try on the dresses I found online b/c we found others in a store… but I was disappointed at how wedding dresses I fell in love with looked on my in person.

My BM dress color is olive. I was so excited when J Crew had that color for spring (the color of the Lorelai you tried on). I ordered a couple to see, same as you did. Well trying them on was a disaster. The top was always too small and the bottoms too big–just like you are finding. I knew it wouldn’t work given I some of my girls are more chesty than me.

I had the same problem! I loved the Watters & Watters silk dupioni slate blue color, and this gorgeous dress with a lace halter. But we went to go try them on, and the dress (which was $320) had no lining and the halter part was a way-too-deep V :( Even though I liked some of the other styles that came in the same fabric, but ultimately could not stand the idea of making my sisters pay over $300 for a dress that just didn’t seem that well made!
