About Mrs. Stiletto

Why, you ask, will the Stilettos be doing some middle school dancing? This Stiletto isn’t so much of a dancer, sadly. It seems fitting, really, considering the scope of our relationship. Mr. S and I actually have a definite role reversal in many aspects of our relationship. He’s a fanatical cleaner (seriously, I’ve never cleaned the bathroom since we’ve lived together), a great cook, and always seems to know when we’re running low on the essentials like toilet paper and hand soap. If it were left to me, we’d be running to the store in a panic as each of these items ran out. I’m a much more laid back member of the household, and tend to be the one leaving shoes out and not seeing the reason for making the bed in the morning (seriously, aren’t we just going to mess it up again?!).

Anyway, where was I? Oh yes - dancing. The stereotype seems to be that women are usually better dancers and the guys struggle with no rhythm and generally avoid the dance floor. I, sadly, am the wallflower of our duo. Mr. S has natural confidence on the dance floor and is just so darn cute. In recent years, I’ve finally started going out onto the dance floor, but I need a good dose of vodka tonic to really get me going. And, let’s be honest, I probably look like a ridiculous fool… but I’ve had to make my peace with that.

So, for the first dance, I’m not anticipating any fancy twirls or big dips. I’m thinking more along the lines of my hands on his shoulders, his hands on my hips, and some awkward swaying back and forth.

Did I also mention that I absolutely hate being the center of attention, and the thought of our wedding day could easily bring on a cold, panicky sweat? So, when Mr. S and I are out there swaying to the music, I want it to be a great song that is personal and emotional… and us, of course! We’ve finally narrowed it down to three “swaying” songs.

Song #1: Jason Mraz featuring Colbie Caillat “Lucky”

This is a song that wasn’t particularly personal for us. I happened to hear it on the radio and just thought it would be perfect (and, I’ve also had a bit of a crush on Jason Mraz). I really love the line, “Lucky I’m in love with my best friend.” Aww. Mr. S is completely my best friend. Hands down.

Song #2: The Decemberists “Crane Wife 3″

Sorry for the sub-par version of this - I always want to make sure whatever YouTube video I post won’t be taken down for any reason. Anyway, if you don’t know this song, you should. It’s beautiful, and always makes me think of Mr. S. However, it also makes me think of a couple of his friends, for whom he shot engagement pictures for last year. He used this song for the slide show he created, so I always associate it with that. But, I love the song!

Song #3: Iron and Wine “Resurrection Fern”

Mr. S had suggested this song a little while back. I listened to it, and immediately said no. I listened to it later while driving home from a wedding… and fell in love. It’s gorgeous. But, they’re not the most wedding-ish lyrics, are they? I was looking online for the meaning of the song, and it definitely doesn’t seem to be a love song. But, does that really matter?

Okay, so this is the moment of truth. Do you have thoughts on songs #1, #2 or #3? I have my favorite of the three. What’s yours?

The Decemberists! I love those guys! Take the song back and make it your own. ;-)

Oh I really like “lucky” but I think that you should pick the song that has the most sentimental meaning to you! I also think that the Iron and Wine song is a little hard to dance to…..

i love crane wife, but do you know the story it’s based on? seems quite a sad song for a wedding.

I like pick #2, I’ve actually never heard it before your post, and I really like it. I like #3 too, but the Decemberists would be my first pick… do let us know what you decide on!

I love the Jason Mraz song but think it better fits a beach wedding for some reason.
So my vote is #3, I think it’s a beautiful song and would be easy to dance to! :)

“Lucky” is one of our choices, but it’s a song close to our hearts. I think the Decemberists sounds like a great choice for you

FH and I are using Lucky for our San Diego wedding. He and I were friends long before we ever dated (5 years to be exact), plus having moved from San Diego, we long to move back. I really like #3 as well. I agree miss marine about picking the song most meaningful to you.

I really like “Resurrection Fern,” but I think your first reaction may be right. The resurrection fern gets its name from its ability to survive long droughts by drying out and then “coming back to life” when it rains. It lives on larger trees, especially oaks, so it’s a beautiful image of an intimate relationship between lovers. Even with these images, I can’t figure out the song’s meaning either. I deeply suspect its about a couple recovering, “coming back to life,” after some sort of physical or emotional loss.

It’s a gorgeous song, but the phrase, “And the falling house across the way, it’ll keep everything: the baby’s breath, our bravery wasted and our shame” probably doesn’t belong in a first dance.

Uh, the Decemberists wrote an amazing song, but considering it’s based on a story about a guy who killed his wife… I’d say it’s completely inappropriate for a first dance.

Well, the crane wife legend isn’t exactly about a guy killing his wife… In most tellings, she flies away because he becomes greedy and peeks in on her weaving. So it is still a sad song, but not necessarily as inappropriate as one about killing your wife :)

That being said, the first dance is the one tune you know people will be paying attention to. While I dearly love Mr. Meloy and Co., you may want to consider a more positive love song.

I was just going to comment almost the exact same thing as ladyjane.
I suppose it could be sad, or it could be opened up as your own interpretation of the song. If I heard the song at a wedding, I would see it as a tender moment with the couple promising to trust and honor and appreciate each other, because the worst thing that could happen would be losing the other person for whatever reason. It is a heart wrenching song. I absolutely love it. Not for us for a first dance, but I would want to hang out with the couple that would use it.
BTW, I think we’re using “fade Into You” by Mazzy Star or “Pistol” by Dustin Kensrue.

I am pretty heavily biased toward Iron & Wine (love, love, love him!), and actually pretty biased against Jason Mraz. It’s a fun song, and I like it, but it seems like his songs are so popular for weddings at the moment, and I’d rather do something a bit more unexpected.

Thanks all for your feedback :) I guess what we have to weigh out is how much the lyrics really matter vs. what the song means to us!

Oh and when I was talking to Mr. S about this post, he was like “I wasn’t thinking about The Decemberists” for our first dance. Ha! So I guess that one is out ;)
