A Tale of Two Dresses: Part I

May 4th, 2009 @ 4:26 pm by Mrs. Beagle

I had not really thought about what my wedding dress would look like until I got engaged. At that point, I envisioned a dress that was not too form fitting, but not too “poofy”. With this in mind, I began casually browsing through dress sites online. I guess I should also add that the thought of dress shopping scared the living daylights out of me. I really don’t like attention brought to me. at. all. So, the vision of somebody waiting on me hand and foot while I dressed and undressed, and then proceeding to stand in front of a mirror in front of other shoppers, made me a tad uncomfortable.

Finally, after my mom, sister, FMIL, and I attended a bridal show in September, I bit the bullet and made an appointment here. So when the day of my appointment arrived, I expected only the worse. However, I was actually pleasantly surprised that it really was not so bad to go shopping for a dress. My mom, sister/MOH, and I had an appointment on a Friday afternoon, so there wasn’t anyone else in the store at the time, and the woman who helped me (Amy) was the sweetest person ever. I highly recommend her to anyone shopping at the south Austin location.

I think I tried on about 12 dresses that afternoon—which took a total of three hours (I can’t believe it took this long, so FYI to all future brides who are about to dress shop: make sure you have lots of time!). There was one dress that everyone agreed on. I liked it best out of all that I had tried on, and since I hadn’t planned on shopping elsewhere, I thought it was “the one”.

(Mr. Beagle, close your browser, NOW)

I liked that it was simple, and satisfied my “vintage desire” with buttons flowing down the back. I wasn’t too thrilled that it required a crinoline, and it was a little more “poofy” than I had originally envisioned, but it seemed like a wedding was the only day I could get away with wearing a “princess-style” dress, so I didn’t think it was something I would worry over too much. I didn’t get that “this is the one” feeling, but since I hadn’t expected to feel that, I wasn’t disappointed.

A few weeks later, I found out they were having a sale, so I joined my mom and sister/MOH to try the dress on one more time and decided to order it. For your pleasure, a sneaky peeky:

Who knew buying a dress could be so easy… right?

How long did it take for you to find your dress?

I’m not usually a fan of a-line dresses or dresses with much volume, but I must say that this dress is definitely an exception. So beautiful! I love the buttons. Even if this isn’t your dress (the title ain’t foolin’ me either!) it’s gorgeous.

This is a really pretty dress but I’d like to hear the rest of the story, like the part where you decide on a different one :)

Mine was the 3rd one I tried on. When you know, you know!
Now, if all the rest of planning could be that easy…

pretty! it took me about 6 months to find my dress. the first three months were full of loose browsing, and the last 3 months were more focused. i went to many stores and had some not-so-great experiences with some not-so-nice sales ladies, but when i found my dress it met all my expectations.

im glad you found yours!

Pretty! I love the buttons down the back.

Quite stereotypically, I bought the first dress I tried on. I tried on some others, but the one I bought was very similar to one I had been drooling over in the bridal mags (and cost about 50 percent less), and looked good on me — it’s a trumpet-style and shows off my shapely badonkadonk :-)

In a way, i kind of wish I had shopped around more, but I still love the dress. Plus, my mom and I live in separate states, and she was there with me that day, which was really important to me.

Can’t wait to see your next post!

I bought a dress, then switched to another. After looking at myself in photos, I can’t believe I even considered the first dress! (No wonder they don’t allow photo taking!)

I’m very happy to see that I’m not the only one who has a tale of two dresses…not a problem I expected to encounter!

oooh I love when there’s a “part 1″ because that means there’s a follow up and a “part 2″ in store! The dress is BEAUTIFUL~ I love those buttons… but I don’t think you’re sold on it. it doesn’t sound like you’re in love with your dress. You should be in love with your dress- I mean, not as much as you love the Mr…. but when you put on THE dress I think you’ll get that “aha!” feeling.

Beautiful!

I think I have found the dress, I am just torn between two that I really like….so I have recruited the help of my MOH and another BM to offer insight!

I LOVE that dress. I am kind of sad that it isn’t “the one” or is it?!

i love alfred angelo too! i only have good things to say about them after visiting them twice to try the same dress.

ultimately i couldn’t buy that gorgeous dress because we change our venue from a large museum space to a tiny restaurant, but i’m still very very impressed by the service, large fitting rooms and non-pushyness!

How funny, Miss Beagle. It seems that you and I both shopped for our dress at the same store, and Amy helped both of us! She IS the sweetest person ever, but I just thought that I’d let you know that she’s no longer with Alfred Angelo.
I was amazed at the customer service that that particular Alfred Angelo store offered on my two visits there before buying my dress, and I have to highly recommend that chain to anyone else shopping at the moment.
Two of my BM actually live in Dallas, and AA had NO problem what-so-ever with me crashing into two seperate stores in the Dallas area to “try on” the dress that I’d already bought so that the ladies could see it in person.
I think that your dress is beautiful, and can’t wait for Part 2!

My dress has buttons like that too! They go all the way down the train. I can’t tell if the ones on ur dress do. Anyways, it’s very pretty. Can’t wait to see the other dress ;)

@Bean: The dress is Alfred Angelo style 1114. If anyone likes this dress, I encourage you to try it on in the store because the picture shown on their website and catalogs is horrible. :)
