About Mrs. Cheese

On the Lighter Side…

May 4th, 2009 @ 4:52 pm by Mrs. Cheese

Mr. Cheese and I took a break from the heavy stuff to peruse the web for program ideas. Turns out he has champagne tastes in paper (I had to say, “No custom laser cutting for us, honey”) but we did come across a fun idea - a “get to know us better” crossword puzzle!

cheesecrossword

I used Eclipse Crossword to generate a custom crossword with little fun facts about us. After debating whether to deal with printing on newsprint, I discovered that cheap 4×6 note cards from the dollar store have the same texture. Voila!

We’ll either set these babies on the ceremony seats to keep people occupied while waiting for us to get our sh*t together start the ceremony, or put one at each dinner setting to spruce things up and act as icebreakers. Neat!

What do you think - ceremony or reception?

I love these! My vote is for the Reception. I have been to so many weddings that I wish would have something like this to keep me busy! :)

miss cheese!

i have thought about doing this in the future also…but thought that getting it printed on newsprint would be too much money…did you explore that option at all? i’d be interested in what you found out…my email address is ericak.weaver@gmail.com.

thanks!

I vote reception too! Great for the people who blaze through their meals! You should also have custom pencils!

What a fun idea and I agree with August15bride I think at the reception to give them a little something to do if you need to spend a little extra time with photos, decompressing after the ceremony, or just generally getting your shiznik together :)

My vote would be for the reception - you don’t want people whispering ‘Whats the answer to 4 down?’ while you are saying your vows!

This is so cute! I vote reception. Some people might not pay attention to your vows if they are tempted by your crossword puzzle. :)

very cute! i’ve seen trivia sheets but never a crossword puzzle. i love the idea.
i would say reception would be the best time to use them, since its’ usually a little less formal than the start of the ceremony.

Why don’t you make two different ‘games’ a crossword puzzle & one of those word searches. That way you have one for the reception for people to doodle on… and one for the reception to doodle on between activities?

Ah! What a coincidence - this weekend my FI and I came up with crossword facts about us, and now I was just looking for a place where I can make it! I love this idea so much. We’re going to have them on the seats for people to fill out during our cocktail hour (cocktail hour and reception are in the same room). I figure it’ll be a good ice breaker, because his family/friends will have to talk to my family/friends to get the correct answers! So my vote is for the receptoin!

What a great idea! (And like others commenting above, I think I’m just going to have to steal it.) My vote is for putting them out at the reception–people should at least pretend to be paying attention to your vows! That’s the important part! :)

We’re doing this. We’re going to have the puzzle printed on the last page of the ceremony program. So cute.

So clever! I really likey! Since you’re using a puzzle for either the ceremony or reception why don’t you create a different type of puzzle for the other functions? Like a Sodoku puzzle for the night before, or take a funny pic with Mr. Cheese and change some things around in a photo editor and make it one of those “Find the differences” games like in the sunday comics!

Reception! I think having little things like this to entertain guests with really make a wedding special. People will remember how fun it was!

This is a great idea Cheese! Now I want to know all the questions and answers you are using! I think ceremony is great because people get there early and it occupies time. But I also think it is a fun icebreaker. In other words I am no help.

everyone seems to think reception - but i would go with ceremony definitely! when i go to a wedding - i’m usually sitting around waiting at the ceremony and it’s not conducive to socializing with others, you just sit in your seat waiting for things to start, so a crossword is perfect! at the reception, there’s an open bar, appetizers and lots of other people to socialize with while you wait for the bride and groom to show up. who wants to sit and do a crossword then? seems anti-social to me.

We also did a crossword! We had it at the reception. It was a great activity while people waited for dinner and to jump start the conversation.

I vote reception. That way people can discuss you as the answers!

We’re doing trivia too, and for a minute I considered borrowing your crossword idea, but I think I like the fun of the wrong multiple choice answers.

We’ll draw it on a huge chalkboard, so people can play together and shout out the answers! :)

@erica: Emailed ya — newsprint was cheap… under 5 bucks for a booklet of 100 8×11 sheets.

@Miss Gloss: LOL. We didn’t think of this until you mentioned it!

@Miss Perfume: Steal away. In my industry we call that “best practice sharing.” :)

Questions:
2. Month Miss Cheese & Mr. Cheese met (June)
5. The first movie Miss Cheese & Mr. Cheese watched together (Indiana Jones - also the name of our dog)
7. The newest dog’s name (Beau)
10. The best cat ever (Frank)
11. Mr. Cheese’s hobby (cars)
1. Number of pets Miss Cheese & Mr. Cheese own (seven)
3. Miss Cheese’s height (fivefoot… fivefeet works too)
4. Mr. Cheese’s middle name (~redacted~)
6. The only female pet in the house (Snickers or Skittles — both fit)
8. Where Miss Cheese & Mr. Cheese met (BAR)
9. Miss Cheese’s middle name (~redacted~)

Thanks for the great tip! I’m going to make one for our OOT Bags! Love the idea. I suggest you have them at your reception so they don’t distract people during the ceremony.

we put ours in the newsletter that was in the out-of-town bags…the extras were displayed at the wedding reception, but I doubt anyone went up and got one.

The answers were all in the newsletter somewhere…for instance, the puzzle asked where we were working when we met…which was discussed in the Fun-Facts-About-Miriam-&-Davis section. Even with all the information IN the newsletter, we still got comments that the crossword was too hard!! Guess people didn’t think it was too fun to have to ’study’ in order to get the answers :)

Our crossword puzzle was in the program; we also offered custom-printed pencils. I think most people worked on it later in the reception.

We also used the NYT puzzles from our birth dates at the morning-after brunch the parents hosted. As one of the groomsmen later commented on his blog, “puzzles from the 70s were kind of hard!”

Hey Cheese how did you customize the puzzle? I’m trying to use our fonts and add our “logo” but I’m scratching my head at this one.

@Sarah: How did you find the NY Times puzzles from your birth days? What a neat idea!

@MissCamera: Twas a pain. I exported to PDF, screen printed and cropped in Word, then copied the clues into Word and changed fonts there.
