About Mrs. Crab Cake

Pretty Packages

May 4th, 2009 @ 9:28 am by Mrs. Crab Cake

After the toasts have been made, the cake has been cut, and the garter has been tossed, the bride and groom make their way to the nuptial bed. I mean, wasn’t that the point? Okay, we obviously haven’t exactly saved ourselves for marriage*, but yeah, after the party is over, I’m guessing he’s going to expect a little party of our own, and probably wants his present wrapped in a pretty package.

The pretty package is causing some serious stress around here.

Why?

Well, despite all my efforts to disguise and hide them, my Double-Ds have a mind all of their own. They are front and center, present and accounted for. I’m not exactly tall, or particularly thin, but 34DD is a difficult size. I imagine there are girls out there in the hive with bigger burdens than mine, but 34DD is my burden, and it’s a heavy load.

The pretty package is extremely elusive.

A girlfriend of mine got me the most gorgeous baby doll, not too different from the one above. It was not my friend. The Girls were escaping! It was not pretty.

Now, I realize the point is not support or coverage, but seriously, it was gross.

The problem here is that I’m a petite DD. However, most companies assume that because a girl needs a large cup, then she must be proportional. By the time I get lingerie that’s big enough in the cup to even look right, the rest of the piece swallows me whole. It’s like a lingerie muumuu. The bust fits, but I could have a small party in the rest of the thing. Oh, and the matching panties? Well… we’ll just leave it at that. You get the idea.

In high hopes that Vicki would be able to help, my girlfriend and I ran over to the mall. I, of course, fell in love with a set that is just to die for.

Um, Yes please. Doesn’t it remind you of my rehearsal dinner dress (that isn’t my rehearsal dinner dress anymore… more on that later)? Lovely and eyelet-y. So, they didn’t have my size. I asked a sales girl.

“Oh, we don’t carry lingerie in that size, we only carry sizes up to 36C. “

Uh… what? Like, not in the store, but maybe I can order it off the website? No, Vicki’s doesn’t make lingerie in anything bigger than a 36C. That is so discriminatory. The sales girl suggested Fredrick’s of Hollywood.

Frustrated, we left. Later that evening, we curled up on the couch and browsed lingerie. I was not at all impressed with Frederick’s. Yeah, they have my size, but nothing was terribly cute. I went back to Vicki, with hopes that something might work.

I ended up ordering two different options.

I’m afraid neither will work, but I’ll let y’all know.

*BTW, the mister and I have decided to abstain until the wedding… We’ll see how that goes…

We always want what we don’t have! I’d kill for this problem… I have so little going on in the chest area, I too can hardly wear anthing.. most cups look like baggy pockets! I haven’t even started looking for my pretty package yet because it’s also quiet discouraging for me for the opposite reason! If only people like you could do a little redistributing, you know, help a sister out!! Haha. Your choices look great though, I hope they work for you!

My girls are also a large burden and I’m stressed about “dressing my package” too. I’ve had no luck with VS.

However, I found luck with Frederick’s of Hollywood and used their registery to ensure my girlfriends purchased “wrapping” that fit. I’ve also had luck with places like TJ Maxx.

Good luck!

I have trouble getting the bra tops on lingerie to fit me well too– have you thought about slips that don’t have cups…something like this might work:

I always have a similar problem when I’m looking for bras/lingerie. I’m 5′2″, a pretty petite frame, but my honkers are 32D! Few companies even MAKE that size!
:(
What’s the deal with “typical” bra sizes? Any girl knows that boobs can be anything but a typical size. (especially after pregnancy… I’m a little nervous to see what’s going to happen then!)

Have you tried a local independent lingerie store? My 32Ds dont like the big chains, or rather the chains dont like them.

Um, SO don’t have this issue — mine’s the complete other end of the spectrum…and soon, I’ll be pulling together a post explaining more, with specifics about how I’m coping (mainly with my wedding dress!).

Le Mystere, I’ve found has some very nice things for slightly mis-proportioned girls such as ourselves(hey, it’s compliment, apparently people pay lots of money to have what we have - although I can’t really think of a good reason why). Introducing: figleaves.com. pricey(depending on your definition of pricy) but totally worth it as they carry some styles up to ridiculous sizes such as 28J! Hang in there, it’s tough but you can definitely find something! As a 32G/H I totally feel for you!

I feel for ya.
I haven’t tackled this issue yet, so hopefully the readers have some great suggestions so I don’t get equally frustrated!

I TOTALLY feel ya! I have found (if you can get over your insecurities…) that *tailoring* helps a lot. Sure, you don’t want anyone else seeing you in that little number. But if you can find a female tailor who is willing, you can get the large size and then bring the rest down to scale. I’m telling you, you’ve never felt so sexy as when the item is made to fit! (And you can wear jeans to the fitting BTW.)

I work at Vickys and it is certainly frustrating when we cannot properly fit a customer.

Perhaps you could try going up in the band size, which should (somewhat) allow for the reduction in cup size? I know at a 34 D, I can fit into a 36 C also.

CC- totally their with ya!!!! I received a ton of Vicki’s stuff at my shower and it all had to be returned. I have yet to order anything else. Seriously ridiculous that they don’t carry above a C!!

A few suggestions- Gap Body- I swear by that place. Not extremely sexy, but great for the girls. Nordies or Macy’s. And finally, I just bought the best little number from Anthropologie- for the wedding night!!!

@Rina-roo: Thanks for the recommendation of Figleaves.com… I’ve never heard of that and they bathing suits too!

Ok… I totally relate to you. I’m a 32F and I’ve completely given up on VS. What I do suggest is http://www.barenecessities.com or http://www.figleaves.com . They cover every size imaginable for bras, figleaves carries swimwear, and I’m sure they probably have some great sets in appropriate sizing for both top and bottom. My only advice would be to make sure that the size you’re looking for matches up with their sizing (check to make sure whether it’s US, UK, or European because it makes a difference). I hope this helps :)

I’m only a single D, but I hear you loud and clear! I wouldn’t trade my girls for anything, but they’re quite a challenge to dress. Everything’s push-up padded (like I need any help!), or boring, basic colors. I have this problem with regular clothes, too, and have to be careful to try things on before I buy from certain stores - Target, for instance, does not design for thin-but-well-endowed women.

Luckily, I’ve also found that the guys I’ve dated (including my dear husband) don’t really care for the lingerie so much as what’s underneath it… so I can feel better thinking of all the money I’m saving by not finding anything that fits me.

I wear a 34G (that’s four Ds, grr) and I have all but given up on fancy underthings. I wear t-shirts and pants/shorts to bed. I am off to check out some of these stores. I’ve heard of figleaves (they had a crazy 90% off sale this past Christmas) but didn’t think to look there. Thanks for the idea!

I have the exact same problem! Petite, but curvy. Have you tried figleaves.com? I just ordered a bikini from them that it actually my size!

Figleaves is great, I am 34DD (although very much “proportional”, much to my dismay =) and only recently had a “bra-revelation” when I found the fantasie line.

Their sales can’t be beat.

Ugh. I feel your pain. I’m a 34dd too, and with the rest of me being a size four I can never find cute lingerie that isn’t way too small in the chest or way too big in the rest. Maybe try Frederick’s of Hollywood? You have to be selective - I think some of their stuff is a little too over the top - but they do have more sizes.

I’m a 32 DD, or even a 30D sometimes.. and it’s a pain!

Elle MacPherson has really pretty, really sexy bras and lingerie. It’s a bit more expensive, but the quality is great and it really lasts. I usually go to Bloomingdales or Neiman Marcus (if you have one near you). You didn’t mention bathing suits, but check out http://www.ozeresort.com.au.. there’s a brand called Jets by Jessika Allen that sells tops and bottoms separately, and even has DD tops (that are CUTE, not granny).

Hope that helps! VS is the worst.
