Mrs. Swan's Picture
Mrs. Swan, New York City Age and Occupation: 31, Legislative Representative Fiance's Age and Occupation: 33, Finance Guy Engagement Date: August 9, 2008 Wedding Date: August 2009 Venue: Battery Gardens About Me: I am an un-crafty but resourceful, Caribbean-born but New York-raised woman who's been known to analyze "Dancing with the Stars" and “So You Think You Can Dance”, buy stinky cheese, and use way too many parentheses. I keep lists for fun, am constantly daydreaming of my next international travel adventure (four continents down, three to go), debating sports (let’s Got Mets/Giants!) and dancing around my apartment to stay sane. I am excited to share our wedding planning journey as I hope to plan a streamlined, personal, and fun wedding with the greatest life partner I could ever imagine, Mr. Swan.
About Mrs. Swan

It’s the most dreaded word in wedding planning: BUDGET. The word is sometimes used to describe weddings that are not as expensive as others, as well as a financial plan for the wedding. In the wedding world, you often hear of planning “on a budget” or of “budget” weddings. Our wedding is somewhere in between. :)

Honestly, do you know anyone who can just spend without consequences? I don’t. So aren’t we all really on a budget, to some extent? I am sure that there are many people who do not have to worry about prices, but I would venture to say that most of us are NOT included in that group.

Sadly, I did not luck out in the “I’m going to have an inexpensive wedding” lottery because:

  1. I live in New York City. You know, the whole bride’s hometown thing, right? Well unfortunately, my hometown is one of the most expensive cities in the United States (if not THE most expensive). For a variety of reasons, we are having the wedding here. Yes, I know we can have a destination wedding, but New York has a place in our hearts, and for many reasons it’s also a practical place for us to have the wedding (ease of travel for many guests, many of whom are international, and because it’s easier to live and plan in the same place. And, well, we like it here). I know it’s expensive. Please don’t remind me. Sigh…
  2. As much as I’d like this to be the case, I don’t really have any friends to hook me up with free services. I am amazed at blog posts about how people who have friends who are designers, caterers, photographers, tailors, etc. I love my friends, but they don’t have skills like that. :) Also I am not sure I would want them to do some of the things related to the wedding. I just want them to show up and enjoy the day with me. Maybe a few will help me get ready.
  3. DIY - As you read in my introductory post, I just don’t craft. Like for real… I was always one of the worst kids in arts and crafts class. I can’t even draw a proper circle. Craft projects freak me out. I am amazed at all of you who are making your own pocketfold invitations, charms, special favors, and stuff. I tip my hat to you. I don’t have the interest, patience, or the creativity, much less the time. I have a travel-intensive job, and Mr. Swan is gone for at least two nights per week for six months out of the year. At my last job, I was lucky if I left before 7PM! The little time I have at home is filled with errands, blogging, planning, cleaning, and making a feeble attempt at enjoying some free time (what is that concept, by the way?). In my pre-blog days, I even inspired a blog post about my DIY ambivalence.

Am I being bitter? Probably, but I am not a slave to the Wedding Industrial Complex (boo!) and to be honest, our wedding is STILL not coming cheap.

Mr. Swan and I have gone about our budget in the most practical way possible. If we don’t think it’s worth it, we won’t have it. Period. I think Manolo for the Brides took a great approach to thinking about wedding budgets. We’ve picked what was most important to us and emphasized them in how much we’ve spent so far: venue, food, open bar, and photography (at one point, my dress was part of it, but that’s changed). We started with our venue/food, and built our budget around that. I didn’t feel the need to have the best of everything in every category, much less have certain things at all. Favors? So far, not planned. A guestbook? Possibly. If we weren’t feeding people, I think our wedding expenses actually wouldn’t be that bad. ;) I LOVE food, so a meal had to be involved in our wedding experience. Oh well!

Even within those important budget line items of venue, food, and photography, we’ve made sure that we have gotten the most bang for our buck. How? A daytime wedding and a great photog with really fair pricing. Let’s hope we keep on the right track.

Even after writing all of this, I am pretty jealous of this woman. A $5K wedding in NYC… I ain’t mad at ya, girl!

What approach have you taken towards developing your budget?

hah. I completely relate… I started off trying to have a small budget wedding, but that proved to be nearly impossible. Budgets are HARD to stick to! Also, I’m not a very crafty friend with tons of designer friends. I say, if you have the money, just have someone else do it. Nothing to be ashamed of!

I totally know what you are going through. My fiance and I live in NYC (I’m from Long Island and his family is in PA) and we just couldn’t afford to do a wedding in the city. The cost of food and drinks would be prohibitive plus we knew it would cost way too much money for people to find hotels in the city for a few nights. I am so envious of brides who have weddings in less expensive places! As a compromise, we’re getting married at a ski resort in PA - everyone will have to travel a bit, but it’s manageable and the cost of the hotel at the resort is super cheap. However, the food/beverage cost isn’t cheap even though we’re getting married outside of NY. Everything in the Northeast is expensive!!

i feel you on all of this. i am not craft-inclined (i tried to DIY some stuff and failed miserably), nor do i have any friends that are designers of any sort (all my friends are either accountants like me or teachers!). we did a smiliar thing to you - picked what we really wanted to spend our money on, and what we didn’t so much care about, we didn’t spend much on. it worked out for us, worked out quite well in fact. people are STILL talking about the wedding, which was almost 8 months ago, and we couldn’t be happier! best of luck to you :)

side note - i personally know the photographer from the $5k wedding, and his sister told me that he was a little “annoyed” that the couple disclosed how much they paid him. he shot the wedding as a favor to them, as a present of sorts. i think its great that he did them a favor, and great that they had their wedding so affordably, but i think that sometimes, those stories sometimes instill a bit of false hope?

I am so glad you are a bee…it is refreshing to see a fellow bride who lacks the DIY gene!! I’m so jealous of all of the brides on here who can put together a gorgeous DIY ceremony program with one hand tied behind their back. I look forward to reading about your ideas and the ways you get creative on a budget without having to resort to getting crafty.

Oh, I feel you. My original plan for a small-budget wedding was totally blown, and I can’t craft to save my life. C’est la vie. Glad you’re part of the Hive! : )

I’m totally hit and miss with the crafting — but most of the time, I feel inept. :-( And I too am envious of bloggers with crazy design/photography/etc. skills…or friends that pitch in and help them out!

NYC is so expensive! It’s making me tear my hair out at this very moment.

But if you are having a wedding under 175 guests there are some really great locations that are “budget.” For instance the Foundry, the Alger House, and a couple others. New York Magazine’s weddings section actually has a pretty good listing. I even found a place on a barge in Brooklyn.

Totally relate in that you prioritize the things that are most important to you. You don’t have to have the best of everything in every category! Wise words!

We joke that sometimes the “budget police” have to give us a little beat down, granted we are the budget police. It’s kinda like you said, we picked the things that we cared the most about and they will be our “best” areas.

I’m on the flip side of the DIY thing, I and my mother are well known in our circle for our “craftyness” so I feel like we HAVE to do DIY things because our friends/family will expect b/c that we can that we should. So I struggle with stressing out about DIY things that I’d much rather just buy on Etsy or the such.

I’m so happy to have you be a part of the Hive, Miss Swan. I’m a fellow NYC bride trying to make a wedding reasonable in a city that’s not always so! The D.I.Y makes me want to D.I.E sometimes, and I don’t have any friends who are particularly wedding services-inclined either :) I’m looking forward to reading more from you!

Hi Miss Swan! I hear ya on the NYC budget problem! I live here too but am having my wedding on Long Island (which I really don’t think is much cheaper) ;-) Quick question - could you share the name of your photog? I have one in mind but am looking for other great suggestions!

Yay Miss Swan! I’m glad to hear from somebody who isn’t a DIY queen. I am pretty crafty, but I don’t know how much I’ll do for our celebration. We don’t have a budget, but I’m spending as little as I can. :) I’m thinking and comparing vendors, cutting out things that are over the top and doing a little DIY. It’s a little different for us, since it’s a vow renewal. Everything is really not a must, kwim? But, it’s important to us and if I think it’s going to be fantastic.

So nice to have you here! We are also working within a budget in a pricey area (DC). We’ve opted for a daytime wedding and reception too. I’m a little nervous about how it’s going to go since many of our friends are big partiers and everyone is used to evening receptions, but I’m optimistic. I’m looking forward to hearing more about your planning!

So nice to have a fellow NYC-er talking about how ridiculously expensive it is to have a wedding here!

I had my heart SET on having our wedding in Manhattan and we have what would be a generous budget anywhere else, but what is proving to be chump change here in NYC! With a bit of creativity and a lot of Ebay, Etsy and Craigslist, we’re making it work!

I LOVE crafting, but a lot of times it ends up costing me about the same money to make something as it would have to just buy it off of Etsy or Ebay, especially with the premium prices you pay at any craft store in Midtown (where we live!).

I’m looking forward to hearing about your adventures!

I’m in NYC, too. While our wedding is below budget for being an NYC wedding, it’s still a lot of money to us. I saw that article about the 5k wedding–not happening here, we’re spending about $9,000 on the food. And our venue is a bed and breakfast Brooklyn (where I grew up). I did get lucky, I’ve got a lot of professional artists as friends so the ceremony music, band, and photography are all free.

Great to have you here–another August bride with locks!

Another NYC, August, park-wedding girl here! Just want to say that I love the perspective you are bringing to this site, Miss Swan! Any other August NYC brides want to swap DOC services or something, let me know…or anyone getting married in September in NYC who needs lanterns, we are happy to share/sell. Anything to make those crazy NYC prices more bearable!

Yeah, my wedding mirrors yours in a lot of ways. We started with venue & food, and everything else just followed. We’re adding on at the end to what we can, but we’re still trying to stick to our guns about certain things. I think it’s easier since we’re having such a small gathering.

We had the same approach as you. We picked our venue and because of location it was a huge splurge, then we just kind of worked everythign else around it.
