About Mrs. Mascara

Motherofthegroomstyle

May 5th, 2009 @ 4:45 pm by Mrs. Mascara

We’ve talked about my mother’s attire for the wedding, and now it’s time to discuss what the mister’s mother will be wearing!

My future-mother-in-law had the same limitations as my own mother when it came to shopping for her dress; the major limiting factor being that there are essentially zero places to shop for dresses in our hometown. While Mama Mascara chose the internet shopping route (with me by her virtual side), FMIL took a more hands-on approach. She came down to visit and we went shopping for her dress together, in person, at the mall.

On her first trip down, after an unsuccessful stop at Macy’s, we decided to try Ann Taylor. She tried on one dress (which is actually very similar to the one my own mother purchased in the end) that I thought looked really good on her. She liked it enough, but didn’t think it was anything spectacular, so we moved on.

Our next stop was Lord & Taylor, and after trying on several dresses without finding “the one”, we were on our way out the door when she came upon a beautiful Anne Klein dress. It was gray and shimmery, with a cap-sleeve and some gathering at the waist. While somewhat casual, it could easily be dressed up with a pretty brooch. The only problem? Of course, it wasn’t available in her size. We brought it up to the counter to ask if any other stores had it in stock, and as our luck would have it, they did not. This ended our first dress shopping excursion, as the mall was closing! After searching online when we got home (without the style number… a lost cause for sure), all we could come up with was a sold out listing on Overstock, and we gave up on finding the lovely Anne Klein.

A month or so later, FMIL came back down to visit again. After round two of not finding anything at Macy’s or Ann Taylor, we went back to Lord & Taylor. Again, there was no Anne Klein, but she did find a pretty purple Adrianna Papell. She tried it on, and we both decided it had serious potential. She was concerned about the dress being a tad to small, and decided she didn’t want to risk it. Dress trip number two had failed!

A week or so after she got back to Michigan, she called to tell me she was having second thoughts about the Adrianna Papell dress. Since the one she had tried on was the last dress in all of Illinois (and on clearance!), I did not have high hopes of it still being at the store, but I told her I would check. I went back to the store a few days later, and sure enough, the dress was still on the rack! I bought it and took it to Michigan with me the last time we went home.

She tried it on again and still worried it was a bit too tight, but said she was going to keep it anyway. Not one to give up easily, she called another Lord & Taylor store just to make sure they didn’t have the dress in her size, and as luck would have it, they did! They shipped the dress in her size to her last week, and it fit perfectly! I’ll be returning the other one soon.

While it was somewhat of a difficult process to find her dress, it was all worth it in the end! She loves the dress (and I do too), and she’ll be looking beautiful as her only son gets married this September!

Did you help your FMIL pick out her dress for your wedding day?

I’m sure I will help her once we get to that point. She has already started to ask what my mom is wearing. I told her we will cross that bridge when we get there. For now, I want to work on finding my dress and my BM dresses!

That dress is so cute! Your FMIL will look fabulous :) As for my FMIL, she actually mentioned to me a few days ago that she saw a dress that made her start thinking about what she was going to wear for our wedding. I’m glad she’s excited and I definitely want to go shopping with her (we’re close). My mom will be the problem child in this equation though, I just know it.

My mom is having a hard time finding a dress…I feel like I picked impossible colors, because she really can’t find anything in them. Are YELLOW and GREEN really that hard to find in a cute MOB style??

I took my FMIL shopping. Poor thing she must have tried on 20 dresses of every style we could think of. The wedding was very formal and she is an older woman (late 60’s) with an apple shape.

In the end we ended up getting a dress that neither of us thought would work. It as teal satin (very bright), strapless (although it did have a jacket) and it had sequins. She tried it on and it just looked amazing on her. We both were in awe at first and then laughed happy tears. It was a great experience overall.

@MightySapphire: @MightySapphire:

My mom had a pretty pale yellow dress for my sister’s wedding in 2006. It was from Boscov’s.

I’m going with my MIL to pick out something for her to wear…I’m afraid she’d show up in some oversized sweater with tights, hooker heels and a cape or something. She has weird fashion sense.

Nope….her 28-year-old daughter went with her. She did invite me along, but it was bad timing for me. She has good taste so I wasn’t really worried, but I don’t know that I would have really wanted to like, go dress shopping with her. Whew, what a stressful event! It was hard enough to go with my own mom!

that color is beautiful!! Unfortuneately my MIL is a fashion disaster (although a very sweet woman :) ) and would not let me help her one bit, she ended up looking like a train wreck, at first i was super upset about the whole thing but then let it go. I offered to help and she declined what more could I do? Looking back its something we chuckle about and was really no big deal.

I am so jealous that you are able to do that with your FMIL. Mine is a nightmare and is one of the most difficult people to deal with. She found a dress she loved, which was the same dress my mother wanted to wear, but was inappropriate for both of them. I went with my mother to find her dress, and my FMIL bought the inappropriate dress anyways because it was the only dress that she found anywhere that she liked. When I say inappropriate, I mean- thin spaghetti straps, low cut, slit up the side almost to her you-know-what area, and she’s incredibly over-weight. My FI said she shouldn’t buy it- but it’s what she wants. We shall see how it progresses- she has until July.
Again, you are very fortunate to be able to do this shopping experience with her. I am jealous!

my FMIL sent me some pictures of the dresses she looked at but with 2,200 miles between us and me not seeing her from feb-june (the wedding!) I wasn’t really able to help her shop. She didn’t necessarily pick out a dress I would’ve wanted, but I’m sure she knew what she wanted.

I had hoped to help both my mom and my FMIL shop for their dresses. However, when I was out of town for two weeks, the two of them joined forces at the King of Prussia mall where they shopped for and purchased both of their dresses!

I guess I’m happy they did it together but for a minute there I sure felt left out of the loop!
