About Mrs. Deviled Egg

I just learned that Filene’s Basement has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and is going to sell some of its stores. My first thought was: Is this the end of Running of the Brides?

While I haven’t really shared it with the hive yet, my wedding gown is from a Filene’s sale that took place in Washington, DC, in August of 2008. To keep my gown a secret from Mr. Deviled Egg, an occasional Weddingbee reader, I’m going to wait until after the wedding to share my experience with the sale.

Overall though, my experience was so much fun. Getting a dress that day at an amazing price was icing on the cake. I really enjoyed the experience I shared with my mom, sister and Mr. DE’s sister. The “Running” will probably go down as my most memorable activity during my wedding planning process.

With so many brides sharing a similar experience with Filene’s, it’s kind of sad that this opportunity may be coming to an end. The sale is such a tradition!

If the Running of the Brides comes to an end with Filene’s, I hope some other outfit takes on this type of sale. It’s something that you really can’t believe until you experience it for yourself and I’m sure that there are several brides out there who would enjoy taking part in this kind of event.

What are your thoughts on the fate of the famous Running of the Brides sale?

i never experienced the infamous running of the brides, but our local Filene’s Basement close a couple of months ago.

I might have tried it, but the store was closed by the time I’d heard of it!

I didn’t get my dress at Running of the Brides, but my sister found two, we were hoping to go to the Boston one in August. I hope they or soemone else still does it.

Got mine there! I was thinking about doing a post on this just last night!! I’ve *heard* that another company has bought them out - so maybe they’ll let us keep running? Future dates are still listed on the running of the brides website (including the Boston one in August).

I got mine at the one in DC last month, I thought it was a great experience and really hope that things don’t change. Its a wonderful option for those brides on a limited budget

I’ve never even considered “running” more so because there isn’t one nearby.

Another note… filling for bankruptcy protection doesn’t mean the store(s) are closing or that a company is going out of business.

We don’t have any Filene’s stores in our area anymore, they’ve all switched over to Macy’s.

It seems like a fun tradition, can’t another bridal store pick it up? Or is it copyrighted?

The news I heard yesterday was that a buyer was interested in about 3/4 of their existing stores and might make an offer. All of the DC stores were on the list of the ones to remain open but the ones in Rockville, MD and Baltimore were not.

(That’s OK, the DC ones are the best anyway!) :-)

I hope, whoever the new buyer(s) end up being, they continue to keep the bridal sale running.

I went to RoTB this year, even though I was still at least 16 months away from my wedding because I knew they were on the verge of filing and I wanted to go to RoTB. Like you, I thought it was a really great experience - I had so much more fun than I have with any other aspect of dress shopping, and I loved that there were no pushy salespeople and that everything was within budget.
I am like 90% in love with my dress, so I’m hoping to go next year and see if I can find a dress I’m 100% in love with, but if the new owners don’t keep the sale going, I’m wearing the dress I have because I would never have found that for the same price.

I really don’t know what to make of the RoTB. We don’t have anything like that in the city I live, but it could be fun!

A bankruptcy doesn’t necessarily mean they’re going out of business. Maybe they just need to reorganize.

I experienced the ROTBs and even got a dress for free (I won a contest leading up to it). But I didn’t come close to finding THE dress. I’m selling the one I got for free to help pay for the one I want.

I think the ROTBs is purely for the experience because (at least at the ATL one), MANY brides left very disappointed.
