About Mrs. Mary Jane

[If you like, revisit: Part I; Part 2; Part 3; Part 4.]

Let’s face it. This dress thing is never going to end. I’m fairly confident that by the time my wedding day rolls around, I’ll have at least 6 or 7 cheap-but-pretty dresses hanging in my closet demanding that I make a choice.

I feel like I’m really jerking everyone around. Myself, mom, FMIL, and all of you. I find a dress, I say, “HEY GUYS, I FOUND MY DRESS!” Then a day, a week, a month later, I find another dress. I hope you’ll bear with me. This on-going process has really helped me to think about what kind of wedding day garb I like and want.

So without further delay, on to the “meat” of this post. I like my white eyelet dress a lot. It’s fun, flirty, flowy, comfy, and at $14, it is definitely budget-friendly. Here it is again (I took better pictures).

Finding a (Non)Wedding Dress: Part 5 (Yep.) : wedding wedding dress Newdres

As a reminder, this is an American Living dress. It’s from JCPenney. It retails at $100, but the website has it for $75, and it was even cheaper in the store.

I was perfectly happy with this dress… until I was chatting with my mom one day.

She said, “Do you still have that old white sundress?” And the memory came back. (Am I the only girl who can’t remember what’s in her closet? :) ) Years ago, I bought a white sundress. I loved the thing, but where do you wear a white sundress? Pretty much the only place I’d wear a sundress at all would be to a wedding, and white is generally not the recommended guest apparel color. I think it’s very flattering though, so I kept it. And kept it. And kept it. And dug it out of the closet at my mom’s suggestion. Now check it out.

Finding a (Non)Wedding Dress: Part 5 (Yep.) : wedding wedding dress Olddres

This is a Bisou Bisou dress from JCPenney. I bought it three or four years ago, so unfortunately I can’t give you a current store source. What do we think of this dress, hive?

Finding a (Non)Wedding Dress: Part 5 (Yep.) : wedding wedding dress Bothdre

I really have no need to have a brand new outfit. While I wouldn’t want to wear “just any old thing” from my closet, I think this dress is something special. I bought it because I liked it, but I’ve had scant opportunity to wear it. And though I’ve moved three times since the purchase, I haven’t been able to bring myself to donate it (as I do with most clothes that have gone unworn for extended periods). Perhaps I didn’t know it yet, but it was waiting to be my wedding dress. (Or, perhaps I just thought I looked pretty hot in it, so I kept it. LOL.)

While I still can’t put definite closure on my dress-hunt (I am way too indecisive for that), this dress is now my front-runner. I think it looks great, my mom and FMIL think so too, and Mr. Mary Jane agrees. I am keeping the American Living dress, too. It was cheap, it’s forgiving (I tend to gain/lose a few pounds pretty frequently) and it could come in handy for our after-party (I’ll talk about this soon, promise!) or another event.

I see/read about a lot of brides buying new outfits for various events related to their weddings. A new shower dress, new rehearsal dress, and of course, a new wedding dress. Let’s pretend for a minute that you already had a great wedding dress in your closet. You’ve had it for years and have barely worn it, and it’s perfect for the bridal look you’re envisioning. But a wedding is one of the few times in your life where no one judges you for spending hundreds or thousands on a brand new, wear-it-once dress. Would you be willing to “miss out” on that experience? Or would you still feel compelled to go out and buy something new?

Miss MJ - the strapless dress is perfect! Just look how different your smile is when you have that dress on! While, sure it’s great to buy something new, I think you’ve already got the perfect dress in your closet!

You look happier in your “old” sundress! It shows in your face and your posture. Would you consider buying a cute piece of jewelry — or fun new underthings — to go with a dress you already own?

I think you look adorable in both dresses, but I love the first dress best! I think the neckline and straps are really flattering on you, and I like the slight V in the back. But maybe I’m biased, because eyelet is a theme in my wedding!

I love the strapless dress. And by the looks of the picture, you feel more confident and pretty in it! I think it doesn’t matter if the dress is new or old. Whatever makes you look and feel your best is what you should wear. I personally wanted a new dress because I never went to any of my school dances/proms so it was important for me to have a new, pretty, fancy dress. But if I were having a court house wedding and I had a super fab dress hanging in my closet that made me feel beautiful, that’s what I would wear!

The strapless dress is definitely more flattering. But, either way you go, the accessories are what is going to make the outfit! We need pictures with shoes! and jewelry!

I love the strapless sundress! I like how it shows of your neckline and shoulders. I think I would definately wear something I already owned if it fit the bridal look.

I like the sundress 100X better. I think it’s way more flattering through your waist- especially from the side.

Hi! I’ve been following your dress posts, and I think so far I like the dress witht the straps best for this occasion! I feel that its a bit more formal but not too formal, the sundress is definately cute but i don’t think for your nuptuls. Also i say keep looking until you are 100% sure its what you want to wear! Don’t just settle, i know you don’t want a super dressy dress, but it’s still your big day no matter the size of the event and you deserve to look and most importantly FEEL your best!!
If you want to keep searching keep on searching in my opinion!
For my weddign i literaly drove all my family/friends/co-works bonkers over my hair dilemma and until i got it right i just kept going, looking back i’m so happy I did! Can’t wait to see which one you end up going with!!

They’re both adorable! I personally like the first one in a side-by-side comparison, but I agree that your smile is definitely bigger in the strapless number.

Remember, too, that for other people’s weddings you could throw on a bright colored cardigan/jacket/shawl over either of these without seeming like you’re wearing white to someone’s wedding.

I think your face in that last set of pictures says it all. The old sundress is so cute on you and I think that it fits you better and makes you look better than the “new” sundress. Go for it!! Maybe you can find a cute necklace or earrings to go with it, or a cardigan and a cute veil. You will look really amazing!

The strapless dress fits you perfectly! You could dress it up with a fun necklace and cute shoes.

I LOVE THE OLD DRESS!! The details are finer and you look exceptionally hot in it. I see nothing wrong with wearing what you have. I wore an old white sundress for my shower!!! Looking good is the experience you want (more so than spending a sick amount of money, IMHO<–why did I just do text-speak like a 14 year old girl?).

Miss MJ - I had to laugh when I read the “Yep.” in the title of your post. You are too cute!

While the $14 dress looks great on you, I have to agree that the strapless sundress is a much better choice for a wedding. I love it on you!

You look beautiful in both, but the sundress is the better choice. The look on your face and the way you are standing in it, make it clear that you are much happier in that one. With a cute pair of shoes and a (maybe) a flower in your hair you would have an amazing bridal outfit. Who knew you had an awesome outfit sitting in your closet??

I think I could do without the expensive dress, as long as I got the chance to try a few on. Though sadly, I do not own a white dress of any kind.
