Mrs. Swan's Picture
Mrs. Swan, New York City Age and Occupation: 31, Legislative Representative Fiance's Age and Occupation: 33, Finance Guy Engagement Date: August 9, 2008 Wedding Date: August 2009 Venue: Battery Gardens About Me: I am an un-crafty but resourceful, Caribbean-born but New York-raised woman who's been known to analyze "Dancing with the Stars" and “So You Think You Can Dance”, buy stinky cheese, and use way too many parentheses. I keep lists for fun, am constantly daydreaming of my next international travel adventure (four continents down, three to go), debating sports (let’s Got Mets/Giants!) and dancing around my apartment to stay sane. I am excited to share our wedding planning journey as I hope to plan a streamlined, personal, and fun wedding with the greatest life partner I could ever imagine, Mr. Swan.
About Mrs. Swan

Just In Case You Were Wondering

May 6th, 2009 @ 12:18 pm by Mrs. Swan

I’d like to introduce you to our venue, Battery Gardens. We’ll be having our ceremony outside (at least that’s the plan… please pray to the weather gods for us) at the restaurant facing the New York harbor. While I love the water view (Mr. Swan and I are really coastal people), it does not have the “Va Va Voom” view of that the River Cafe in Brooklyn does (we looked there too), but I think it’s pretty, nonetheless.

Above are some photos courtesy of Mrs. Firefly. (Thank you, Mrs. Firefly!!) If you look really hard in the photo on the bottom, you can see the Statue of Liberty.

In case of rain, we’ll have the ceremony upstairs. I’m still thinking nice dry warm thoughts. The upstairs portion of the restaurant will also serve as our reception space. Since we’re having a summer wedding, I wanted our guests to have the option to be able to have access to outdoor space to enjoy the sunshine, which they can enjoy on the lovely balcony. Here’s the reception area set up for Mrs. Firefly’s reception.

We ended up picking Battery Gardens for many reasons:

  1. We loved its sleek, modern look (Mr. Swan and I are definitely lovers of modern, clean lines).
  2. The easy to access (The Staten Island Ferry and two subway lines are right next door) and very pretty location.
  3. We didn’t need to look at multiple places for a ceremony and reception, and we didn’t need to look for a caterer (if you haven’t realized, I can be pretty lazy on the wedding planning front).
  4. We didn’t have to rent or bring in items (see above re: laziness).
  5. The size of the space was right for the price (although we did compromise by having a daytime wedding).

By the way, here are 2 other beautiful Battery Gardens weddings: 1, 2.

This is a gorgeous venue! My brother and his wife had their rehearsal dinner there and we all said that it could have also easily been an amazing wedding venue.

Oooo, does it come with chivari chairs, like in one of the above pictures! They add a classic elegance that contrasts so well with the sleek, modern nature of the venue!

Battery Gardens looks beautiful! And the Statue of Liberty…I didn’t even have to squint. That would be really neat to have in your pictures. :) But maybe I just say that because I’ve never even been to NYC…

I love the Battery Gardens..they didn’t have my date available but I would have soooo booked there! And congratulations Miss Swan! I am so happy that there is an African American Bee! I am an over 30 African American bride-to-be who has been lurking on this site for a year looking for ideas! I can’t wait til you talk hair—I have no idea how to do mine for the wedding!

it’s a lovely venue and i recognized it as mrs firefly from the get. lol, wow i’ve been reading a long time.

and i would say you’re “energy efficient” when it comes to wedding planning. that’s what i always say instead of lazy. unless i’m really just being lazy. lol

Love it, I don’t think you “settled” at all, that’s a gorgeous venue- who would complain with that view?!?!? :)

This is a beautiful place. I checked out the other sites and it looks like it would be beautiful even if you had to move it inside. Congrats! We’re having ours on the water too but also compromised with a daytime wedding…do you plan on keeping the party going through the night?

I loved Battery Gardens and very nearly booked it myself. It is beautiful, but ultimately a little to small for our party.

My fiance and I celebrate our dating anniversary every year at River Cafe. We love it, but holy crap, so expensive. We didn’t even think of trying to have our wedding there!

Regarding the hair thing: my plan for my hair is to just get it done so that it looks like my hair on any given day, just “done.” But I am not really going to have a style (no prom queen hair for me). I don’t have locks, but maybe that is something you could think about: not really having a style per se, but just doing it how you do it every day, just get someone else to arrange it so it is more “done” and maybe use an accessory like a flower or something to punch it up.

Just an idea.

We made the same type of decision!! We chose an outdoor venue with an available indoor reception area that does all the catering, alcohol, and even the cake! So much less to worry about!
