Making Progress

May 6th, 2009 @ 4:05 pm by Mrs. Mascara

The invites are coming along. They’re not finished, but I’m happy (for the most part) with how they’re turning out so far. As a little teaser, here’s the map I came up with that will be on one of the inserts.

Sadly, even the icon of the reception venue is hideous.

I tried my hardest to make it look good from the outside, and even added a flag for some visual interest. It’s just not a pretty building. You win some, you lose some, I guess. On a positive note, check out how cute the church icon is! It’s even close to the real thing.

Are you designing a custom map for your wedding?

Looking good! I like the colors, like the simplicity and love that you’re using scriptina. I’ve also toyed around with that lovely font but my ts always get messed up and put a big space in my words. I’ve tried to convince myself this is a detail I don’t care about and to let it go, but yours are perfect, if you have a trick to fix it I’d love to hear

Cute! ^_^ I was toying with the idea of doing the exact same thing, with little doodles of the church, site. And your church is adorable enough to make up for a bland reception icon! ^_^

CUTE! I am making custom maps. I made it in Microsoft Word by tracing over a map, removing the original map, then filling it in woth color. Then I printed that, drew some icons, and scanned the whole thing in. Problem with mine is that its an awkward size (something I didnt think of until AFTER..) so Im playing with getting it printed on a 5×7 when its really a decent amount larger… Frustrating

Your map is very cute. Looks similar to mine. I like how you incorporated the little buildings. Where did you find those?

So cute! Could you use an amory symbol or two glasses clinking to denote the amory icon?

After seeing so many diy tutorials on Weddingbee, I’m seriously considering it. It also helps that ours would be easy to make since the reception site and ceremony site are pretty much a straight toad and one turn away.

your’s is turning out grea,t I love how much the icon matches the actual venue!

Haha, your poor little armory. I like that it looks like the actual building (I assume?). Even if the building isn’t exactly winning any awards for architecture. The church icon (and the church itself) are SUPER cute!!

I have to design a custom map… the address provided by the reception venue doesn’t correlate to its actual location! Hopefully it will prevent a lot of misdirected Googlers…

I worked for days on my custom map, but in the end I scrapped the project. I googled a map for the area and found a MUCH better version that I photoshopped into our colors! After all that work, I was so ticked that I could have just googled it!

Awesome! I’ve put a little thought into ours but not much work. May I ask how you did this (software, etc.?)? I found some info online but haven’t read it too closely yet.

@BenJerrysBride: I couldn’t handle the uneven spacing in the font either, so I adjusted the kerning between the letters that had problems manually in Illustrator.

@WorstTwinEver15: For the buildings, I just traced the major elements of the picture of the church, and drew up the hotel based on a picture of one of the hotels I found online. The armory I just sort of made up based on how I remember it looking from the outside, but I think I’m going to change that icon to be some little clinking glasses or something since it’s kind of ugly.

@Miss D’orsay: Thanks for the idea D’orsay…I’m probably going to do this instead now!

@TheEditrix: I used Adobe Illustrator, took some screen shots of google maps of the area, and traced over the relevant streets to get my own custom map. Then I drew up little icons for the places of interest and added the street names.

All in all, your map looks really good! I traced a map for my invitations but it was showing almost the entire state of Kentucky because our wedding is in a small town and all our guests will be traveling. I put directions on the back of the sheet for the precise ceremony location.

Maybe a silly question, but how did you get all the colors like that? I can’t change the color of my Interstate and Route icons….
By the way, it looks great!! :)

I am also designing a custom map. Actually the whole invitation and inserts. I have been using Microsoft Word and the drawing tools to make the map.

@Miss Joey: The process is scaring me too :-/

@Miss Mascara: I love your map! I was going to say the Amory was not hideous and then I realized I was confusing it with something else :-/ Sorry… I really like Miss D’orsay’s idea :)

I did! And then didn’t use it!
I love the font you chose (not the scriptina one)

I am having a professional help me design our map. I’m like you in that I want it to be personalized with icons that resemble the actual places, so it’s been a struggle!
