New Email on Retainer…

May 6th, 2009 @ 5:22 pm by Mrs. Gloss

Image

After Bruschetta’s post a few days ago about ’we-mailing’ I realized that my email address has the initial of what will soon be my maiden name. Although I think it’s perfectly acceptable to keep using this email, a little part of me is really excited to use my new last name.

So I created a new email address to embrace my married last name. It may be a little premature, and I swear I won’t start using it until after the wedding, since it’s probably ’bad luck’, but I wanted to reserve it ASAP. It’s a little like practicing signing your married name before you are officially married - who hasn’t done that, right?

Will you change your email to reflect your new name?

I’ve reserved my new gmail address as well for when I get married. I don’t someone else having it!

Plus it’s kind of fun…

Yeah, I got a Gmail account with his last name months before we got engaged ;). I’ll probably forward all emails (old name and new name) to one account and send from there with my married name as the “from” info, so I’ll never need to correct anyone.

I plan on it (okay, so I did the same thing and went ahead and reserved my “married” e-mail address so no one would take it)!

Great idea—I hadn’t really tought about this either, but my current email also uses my last initial which will no longer be once we are married. I’m still a ways away from the wedding—but probably a few months before I will change my adress also.

I wish I was changing my email address and my name. My new name would be super boring. Mr. Joey and his whole family thinks I should keep my name.

I started a new email registration but chickened out. I just didn’t feel right, yet. Luckily if I change it, it’ll be a really uncommon name so no worries about losing it.

I got my new gmail a couple of weeks ago, even though I won’t be using it for a year!! I didn’t want anyone else to take it before then though!

My “official” e-mail address actually is first letter of my first name followed by my whole last name, so I definitely needed to get a new address, but my name-to-be is very common, so no amount of playing around with it yielded an available address… So I had to add two letters at the end that indicate my professional field.

Aww I didnt even think of reserving a new email address. I have only changed my email once before and its because I wanted to have a more “grown up” address.

Thats it I am going to reserve one right now…lol!!!

Yes I have my new gmail saved and ready to go! I think someone mentioned it on the boards a while back and it spurred me to reserve it early.

I created a gmail address with what will be my married name too. His last name is much more common than mine, and when he had trouble setting up a gmail account because all variations of his name were already taken, I figured I better set mine up before someone else snagged it!

Like @snake, my name-to-be is very, very common. I can’t find any gmail combos that are still available…I think i will just keep my old one. oh well….we’ll see if i can find anything that’s actually creative.

Anyone know how hard it is to port gmail docs/feeds/etc from one account to another?

I definitely reserved a gmail account with my new last name as well… but when we’d only been together for 6 weeks! He found out much later, though still before we were officially engaged, and we had a really good laugh…

I’m so excited to do this very thing! I’m tempted to do it already but part of me wants to wait a bit. My new last name is very uncommon, so I am not worried about someone else snapping it up at least.

I didn’t think about changing my personal email. I work for a big corporation, so it is going to be complicated enough to get that one changed! Too many changes!!

I took forever so had to get lastname.firstname@gmail.com my new last name is pretty uncommon, but still someone has it I guess! This gave me an idea and I just also reserved a We-mail of Hisfirst.Myfirst.Lastname@gmail.com

I started using my married initials in my email addresses last year…. we’ve been engaged forever, so I felt pretty comfy doing it prematurely.

Ohhhhh, you bring up a point that I haven’t even thought of yet. Because I haven’t even arranged for a name change. Must do that.

I’m going to change my email since it’s basically my name. Just another “change the name” on that crazy list we brides must do!

I’m not worried about not being able to reserve my email, but I am a little hesitant to give up my hotmail account. I’ve literally had it since I was 12. All friends and family know this email, so it’s going to be a huge transition to the new one. Is there some mail forwarding service out there? lol

@JennyBryde: Depending on which email service you use, click on “Settings” or “Options” (different for each one) and in there, you should see a tab for “Forwarding and POP.” I just checked my yahoo account and now it says you have to upgrade (pay) to forward. Hopefully you don’t have yahoo! I don’t think Gmail charges to forward to a new address though. Not sure about hotmail.

he he, I was planning on registering elissa.hislastname on gmail. I don’t have to worry about it being snatched up, no one in the world has that name.

hopefully that’ll free me of the wedding spam too, lol

I had a lot of reasons no to change my name, but to annoy people, this is the reason I give: “It’d be WAY too hard to change my email address!”

Oh, they get so upset! :D

Hahaha…I’m laughing because I have really been thinking about this lately! I too thought it might be a little premature, but I mean, Cruz is a very popular hispanic last name, right? I don’t want someone to take it! You’ve convinced me it’s something I must “reserve” immediately!

I created mine not long after we got engaged, and I use it now to collect all my wedding related feeds in Google reader. Once we’re married, I’ll make the transition.
