About Mrs. Swan

I Got Schooled

May 7th, 2009 @ 5:11 pm by Mrs. Swan

I have a confession to make: I’m not as enlightened about weddings as I like to think I am. Let me explain.

I had a major problem with dress shopping. Everything I saw was either too expensive, had just come out in the designers’ most recent collection and was unavailable in stores, or was a bit over-the-top for me. I am not into the princess look, nor am I really attracted to a lot of beading or crystals (although I think many women look beautiful in these looks). I did not really look forward to the dress shopping process, and had been putting it off slowly, which in turn, made me hate it even more.

Also, I should let you know that as much as I like style and nice clothing, I won’t pay for it. I don’t own a pair of Jimmy Choos or Louboutins; I can’t recognize last season’s Prada. With NYC mortgage payments, student loans, and a major love of travel and food, expensive clothes just don’t make the top of the list of priorities for me. I find a way to still find great styles for less. People who compliment me on my clothing are surprised when I tell them it’s H&M or Zara! :)

Now, about this whole wedding dress shopping thing. Why did I not initially adopt this same M.O. for that? I coveted dresses that were way above my budget, and felt this sense of hopelessness that I wouldn’t find THE ONE (if there even is a ONE dress out there for me).

Enter David’s Bridal.

I will admit that even though it’s a great place to find a dress, I did not take it seriously as a place to shop. It was the first place I visited to try on dresses, since I knew I would I would find a dress in my budget range for sure. My first visit was pretty uneventful, and I had a great consultant who was helpful and sweet. BUT, I still thought that David’s was, well, “the Old Navy of bridal shops”.  Plus, I had read about so many negative experiences from brides who shopped there on various bride message boards. Yet, David’s is a great source for many women who want their dream dress, but can’t afford the designer prices… like me.

Then, right around Christmastime, I saw it online: the dress that I thought may just be it. I went, I tried it on, and I loved it (minus some of the beading on it). I had yet another positive experience at David’s. Then, I thought about my previous attitude towards this store. Was I believing what too many bridal magazines and bridal TV shows love to tell brides? That more expensive is automatically better, regardless of who you are? The more expensive the dress, flowers, or invites are, the better they are? I was a little disappointed in myself. Even if it is the “Old Navy of bridal shops”, perhaps David’s Bridal would have my wedding dress.

I’ve realized that I can’t count anything out during this process, as it may be exactly what I am looking for. The local floral shop, home-based business, or Etsy shop, may just be exactly what I want and need for this wedding, and you know what? That’s okay. Sometimes you know these things, and you have to let your experiences teach you over and over again.

Anyway, thank you, David’s Bridal, for schooling me.
(By the way, I ended up with the David’s dress… I’ll definitely blog more about it. Also, I know that there are many less expensive stores and designers out there that are not at David’s Bridal. I encourage everyone to look high and low for what truly fits them and their budget.)
Were you originally searching for dresses that were way out of your price range?  What finally convinced you to look in a store that you originally overlooked?

You’re right — I think in everything in life there is this emphasis on the expensive, that it is better. And especially so with weddings. But everything is totally inflated and distorted with weddings anyhow. It is impossible to know. I think your experience at David’s Bridal is great — probably character-building and helped you learn some things. And you got a dress! There are a couple Bees on this site who got awesome DB dresses. And who doesn’t love Old Navy?

I’ve been to about three dress shops (and will be visiting a fourth this weekend). I’ve tried on dresses of all shapes and all prices, but my top choices so far are ones that are within my budget. I did try a few more expensive one’s on, didn’t think about the price, but just was not in love with them. I love the two that are at the top of my list now and they are priced great.

And kudos to you for liking simple gowns. I am not one for beading or lace, I like modern and classic. Although some girls look great in those styles, my petite frame does not warrant the use of them on a gown.

Great post. I had the exact same experience. I don’t know why, but I had some sort of preconceived notion that I would never find a dress I liked at a place like David’s (I’m all about a good bargain - I just never thought I would find a style I liked there since I’m not the poofy sequined dress type). And, guess what, I found my dream dress! Great lesson to never rule *anything* out when it comes to wedding planning.

I just have to say, I heard my own voice when I read your post! I love how honest you are,
most of all, how honest you are with yourself!

I haven’t been to David’s yet, but I will. I, too, thought of it as Old Navy for brides, but as a BM a few years ago, I saw differently.

ditto… my experience was not the best. How how i thought it would be. DB was the place were I thought I would just try on styles to see what I like. That day, I came home with THE DRESS and only spent $200, it was on clearance. Looking at the dress you would never guess it was that cheap. I think its hit or miss there. Some of the dresses looked and felt cheap, others were super pretty and did not look like the price tag.

Miss Swan, I completely understand. I didn’t even give DB the credit of Old Navy; I thought of it more as the Walmart of wedding dresses! But I am so glad I gave Davids Bridal a chance. I found an amazing gown for a very decent price & it was perfect!

My dress ended up being $200 below my budget (*score*), and was the very last dress I tried on during my appointment because I had overlooked it for the entire hour.

I absolutely know what you mean about the beading! I saw so many dresses that looked they would fit right in at PROM; I couldn’t imagine wearing something at my wedding that I would have mooned over at 18. I will definitely not be wearing a tiara!

I was also very hesitant about DB. But, it turned out my perfect dress was there! I think it’s definitely worth a look!!

I never went dress shopping. Not once. I think I was scared by what I read about the experience and got a custom-made gown from the web. I’m glad you had good experiences!

Kudos for writing this post. I also purchased my dress from David’s: I love my dress, I had a great experiance, and I only paid $250. There have been quite a few posts on the boards ragging on David’s, even some that say the dresses are poor quality. I completely disagree and it was pretty hurtful to hear someone say they thing your dress is poor qulaity.

I went to David’s with an open mind and a small budget. My cousin got a gorgeous gown there for quite a steal, and I figured I could do the same. Unfortunately, the service was abysmal and none of the dresses I was granted permission to try on were anywhere near my budget or my liking. That being said, there are a bazillion DB locations and employees, and different circumstances on different days, so my experience certainly can’t be the end-all, be-all of DB shopping experiences.

Happily, I wound up finding my dress for $150 at a consignment shop, where I got OUTSTANDING service and a great shopping experience in general.

I had originally planned to spend maybe 1500 bucks on my dress and I refused to go to the local David Bridal due to a past experience…so I went to a couple trunk shows and finallly went to a local bridal salon that I had heard rave reviews about and fell in love with an amazing dress and it was double what I planned to spend…but I was in love how could I have said no

my dream dress while I was planning was from Priscilla of Boston, Vineyard Collection (the Piper). Can you tell I’m still coveting it? It’s about $2000. So i started saving money.
After we started seriously looking at our budget, I knew it wasn’t meant to be & so I never even tried it on. I went to DB & found a dress that I LOVE and couldn’t be happier! I have a great experience too (although I’ve never watched “trying on dresses” shows on TV, so maybe other places are fancier?)
I think that you’re right & you don’t need to spend a lot of money to have an amazing wedding. I read the magazines & watch some of the tv shows, but keep in mind that that’s not reality (and most of the people spending that kind of cash are probably going to end up in debt from it).

I know my DB post started a DB rant, but I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of many of the gowns I tried on… and their BM options. DB schooled me, even if I didn’t end up with a dress from DB :)

DB bride over here! My dress, BM dresses, and the flower dresses are all from there. I’ve had nothing but positive experiences with them, even when I had to exchange my dress. I guess the bad experiences is all about management in the store you’re at. And you know there are expensive things that I covet, but most of the time I can be just as happy and learn to love my less expensive stuff even more. I don’t think I’ve paid full price for anything since I started wedding shopping…except my cake topper but it will be well worth it!

I had gone to a David’s Bridal near me to look for a bridesmaid dress for my sister for another friend’s wedding. When I went, I was horrified by the lack of customer service from the employees. I couldn’t return. It was just that HORRID. I’m sure that others have had better experiences elsewhere, but it just really left a sour taste in my mouth. I couldn’t do it.
