We’re Breaking Up

May 7th, 2009 @ 12:50 pm by Mrs. Mary Jane

It’s been a good 2.5 years. Every relationship needs to consist of great listening skills, and both people need to be on the same page. We’ve been a great pair, but soon it’s going to be over.

My hairstylist is breaking up with me.

Actually, she’s moving across the country. About 6 weeks before my wedding. Crap. I found out this information from a friend just a few days ago; she uses the same stylist.

I was NOT planning on having my hair professionally styled for the wedding, but I did want to get it cut a couple of weeks prior. And I wanted to have that done by someone I trust. Damn it!

I need two more haircuts before my wedding. One probably in early June, and another in late August. My stylist is moving in late July. So, here are my issues.

I feel like maybe I should go to a new stylist for my June appointment to make sure that I like her (or him) before my pre-wedding cut. But on the other hand, my current stylist will still be around in June, so I’d rather have HER do it than someone new.

Perhaps she can recommend one of her co-workers - I know that one of them cuts her hair. I even considered having her do my wedding cut right before she moves. But I really don’t think my hair will look its best, given that my wedding will still be six weeks from that point.

What would you do?

I would definitely ask for her recommendation! Even if she can’t point you to a colleague or friend (seems unlikely), she can explain your haircut in stylist lingo, so if you do need to find someone new on your own, you can at least give them clear directions on how you want it cut. Good luck!

I say, find a new stylist NOW! That way, in case you’re not crazy about the cut you have some time for it to grow out a bit. I’m a little peeved that your stylist didn’t call to tell you herself that she’s leaving. That’s poor business. I had a stylist once that left and never even called to tell me, and when I showed up at my appointment the receptionist looked at me as if I were crazy. A good hair dresser will keep you informed and also recommend another stylist that can take her place.

My hair stylist broke up with me, JUST for the wedding. :( I was lucky enough to find seven (!!) appointments for all of us with a month out, but am nervous about my trial. We’ll see how it goes!

I think you should ask for a recommendation from your stylist and try them first at your next hair cut.

Agreed - You should ask for a recommendation now and use that person for your interim cut. Hope it works out well for the wedding!

You may want to be ready to be extra-descriptive about what you like, but part of me also thinks another person can do just as good of a job unless your hair is really tough to wrangle.

Ask your stylist for a recommendation now and try him/her for your next cut. I agree with srismi-have your stylist give you an explanation of what you like.

Good luck!

Do they not know how important wedding hair is!?! Some nerve of her for moving before your wedding! Lol, really though, it does suck a lot, but maybe you can ask her who she would recommend and try them out now and if they don’t work out, you at least have one more hair cut to get before your wedding so it won’t be too tragic if it sucks.

I recently just found my perfect stylist who I love and I will be heartbroken if she ever leaves me. So I feel your pain.
Does she work at a salon? Because if she does, what you should do is have her do your June haircut, and have the person who is going to be your new stylist watch/learn.
Otherwise, take a million pictures and get specifics from her on exactly what you should ask for in hairdresserese (I don’t speak it and I was getting the wrong cut for years!). Then get the rec. from her and just put it out of your mind.
You could also get the rec. from her before she leaves, go to the new person, and if you hate it, have her fix it.

At least you don’t have my sister’s problem - she did a hair trial a week before her wedding, and the day before the wedding the stylist quit and didn’t call her.

I would definitely ask your hairdresser to recommend someone and have the new person do your next trim. That way, if you like the new person, you don’t have to stress about it, and if you don’t, then you have time to find someone else.
I’d be devastated if I lost my hairdresser, we’ve been together almost 3 yrs…I totally found her by accident and she is amazing. I always tell her that if we hit the lottery I’m giong to hire her as my full-time stylist so my hair can look fabulous every day LOL!

@Miss Marine: It’s possible she hasn’t gotten around to calling yet. She just found out pretty recently. I see what you mean though ;)

I would ask your hairstylist for an honest recommendation (don’t ask the salon), and then see if the new stylist can observe your next haircut with your current stylist. They should make a special exception for you, since it is for your wedding!

I was worried my hairstylist of 8+ years would move before my wedding, but thankfully, he’ll be able to give me my last pre-wedding cut and highlight. However, he won’t be styling my hair day-of (I love his cuts and highlights, but I’m not crazy about his updos). He’ll actually be attending the wedding - even better! :)

i would ask her for a recommendation now, instead of waiting till June. maybe if she recommends the other person in the shop, she can also show/tell this person exactly how she normally cuts your hair.

I would definitely ask for a rec. now. Especially with short hair as you have… you don’t want someone to mess it up!

Like everyone else said, ask her to recommend another stylist for you and go to that person for the June and late August cut. I say June so that they can get to know your hair before cutting it right before the wedding.

I have a hairstylist I go to ALL the time and I have about 5-6 cuts before the wedding in November. If she moved, I’d absolutely die!

A similar thing happened to me. My stylist had a baby and decided not to return to work. I’m still in limbo seven months later … but used a girl at my wedding venue (3 hours away) who did a GREAT job last weekend on my wedding day (I had a trial three weeks before).

I wouldn’t stress. I’ve only had two bad haircuts in my life–the first was when I was in high school. I went to a super cheap place the the stylist was heading directly to Disney World as soon as she finished my hair. Her brain was already hundreds of miles away.

The second haircut was spent listening to the stylist talk about how she is sick and tired of hair and wanted to shave her head. y e a h. If something like this happens, just cut the appointment short, if you know what I mean…Yikes!

I’m sure you’ll be fine–and look beautiful!

I guess it depends on your hair. My hair is curly in some places and wavy in others and super fine but appears thick which means I need a hairstylist who understands all of this and knows how to cut it wet while considering the difference once it dries and curls. Once in the past my hairstylist left and I had several terrible haircuts (including one from another stylist at the same salon I now frequent) before settling on my current stylist. That being said, I would suggest going to your stylist in June, getting a hair cut you love and taking several photos. If she has a recommendation, maybe try talking to that person first and/or bring photos of how you like your hair to look. Additionally, you wait until July and get the cut you want with the possibility of a simple trim from a new stylist 3 weeks before and put off finding a new stylist until after the wedding.
