…reception.

Well, not a reception, actually. More of an after-party. Well, not really an after-party… more of a barbecue/picnic.

I’ve written before about the reasons surrounding our decision not to have a large wedding or reception. In short, the reasons for this include:

  • Introversion/shyness (personal preference)
  • Cost
  • A heavily one-sided guest list (80%+ in-laws)
  • Travel (We really didn’t want to ask people to spend their hard-earned vacation time in North Dakota.)

We were met with support when we announced to our families that we did not plan to have a wedding. However, we were also “warned” that Mr. Mary Jane’s family would not let this joyous occasion go by uncelebrated. Basically, if we weren’t going to do anything, someone else would.

That someone else recently came to me in the form of my wonderful FMIL. She sent me an email that essentially said that she and FFIL would like to throw a party in celebration of our marriage, about three days after our ceremony. (Mr. MJ and I had half-expected a party, but not so soon!) We were both extremely touched by FMIL’s offer, so of course, we agreed!

FMIL and FFIL plan to host this fun and casual get-together on their rural property in Minnesota. They’ll set up food (salads, fruit, desserts, etc) in their garage, and they plan to do some barbecuing (possibly a pig-roast). I don’t know exactly who they are planning to invite, but FMIL described it to me as a “gathering of family, neighbors and friends”. The party will start in the early evening and FMIL hopes to be able to have a small fireworks show after dark (small because we have to finish it up before the sheriff shows up!).

So, how does this fit in to our original concerns about a reception? That doesn’t matter. This event has graciously been offered to us, and we’ll accept it with much humility and appreciation regardless of whether it meshes with our original “plans” or “theme”. But the fact is that we’re very excited about it! Still, I’ll touch on those bullet points I listed above. Cost is a no-brainer. It’s not our party: we’re not paying for it. (But of course, we plan to offer to contribute, even if it inflates our budget.) As for our shyness, we’ll just have to deal with it. In this type of setting, we’ll be mingling and hanging out, in casual clothes. There probably won’t be toasts, a cake-cutting, a bouquet-toss, a first-dance, or other moments that make humble folks like ourselves jittery with discomfort. As far as travel is concerned, people probably won’t need to drive for more than an hour to attend this picnic. This will end up feeling a lot like a reunion of Mr. Mary Jane’s family, but since it’s his family throwing the party, that’s to be expected. We hope my parents will be able to make it (they will, if they stay in town a few days before flying home). We’ll also invite a few of our local friends.

We’re touched and excited that FMIL and FFIL want to do this for us. I feel very lucky to have been welcomed in to their family with open arms; it’s like I’m one of them already. I’m looking forward to seeing how it all comes together. (And of course, I’ll share it all with you guys.) And I’ve been itching to satisfy my DIY craving, so I’m psyched that I get to help with the invitations, too!

Has someone surprised you by offering to throw you a party (engagement, shower, bachelorette, hometown reception, etc.) you weren’t expecting?

How sweet of them. I bet you are more than excited. I was hoping to have an engagement party, but looks like both sides think it’s a silly idea. But I cannot complain, as both of our parents have graciously agreed to foot the bill for the wedding and I could not be more thankful and humbled.

That’s so nice to hear! Especially since we often hear about negativism of our FILs! :)

Sounds like fun! I’m glad you’re going for it … it sounds a lot less stressful than planning the shindig yourselves!

Aww! Sometimes in-laws surprise you and I’m glad to hear a wonderful in-law story as I have been welcomed with open arms into my fiance’s family. My fiance told me that his sisters wanted to make sure someone was throwing me a bridal shower and he told them that my mom and MOH will probably help with them. But its such a nice thing to hear that they asked!

I love that it might be a fusion reception/reunion, and can’t wait to hear more about the plans as they fall into place — especially the food! ;-)

This would be a great opportunity to rock your $14 extra sundress! It is totally picnic appropriate!

We did a pig roast for our engagement/4th of July party and our friends loved it! Mr. Gloss especially loved it so much so that he wanted to do it again for our reception!!

Our good friends threw us a welcome bbq, three days before our wedding… seriously it was one of the best events of the wedding. It was both casual and relaxing, and planned by our family friends which means stress free! I had so much fun this night and so glad we had it, since the rest of the wedding days were such a whirlwind!

we had the wedding, then the reception and the next day invited guests invaded my parents backyard for a southern bbq complete with real bbq from NC..and it was calmer and easier to talk and mingle

Your wedding/reception sound a lot like what most people do in my area of the country, so I’ve read your “nontraditional” wedding details with interest. Very few vendors are used - we make use of friends and family who have talents they can share to make our wedding possible on a tiny budget. It’s nice to see our type of “wedding” on WeddingBee, even if it is considered nontraditional by the masses. It certainly is traditional for us!

This is so sweet and perfect, and the pressure of planning it is all off of you (that is the best present of all in my opinion!!!) What a nice warm way to kick off married life!

Even though I don’t know your family, I think you should anticipate a few toasts :)

It sounds like a casual comfortable sorta wedding, you get to do the fun wedding things without all the stress and worry that it’s not what you want or will cost too much.

I love to see how people really step away and make a day that they want without feeling the urge to spend too much or do something that they won’t enjoy.

We have a low budget in the wedding world (1ok) and I have never felt squeezed…I keep wondering, why couldn’t I do something just as lovely for 5k?? Or why didn’t we just opt for a casual bbq??

We were offered a day-after brunch that was such a great idea we couldn’t refuse, and a bridal shower that was such a bad idea I couldn’t accept. It’s nice when people know you well enough to fit what they want/expect from a capital-W Wedding with what you want/expect.
