I keep lists for fun, am constantly daydreaming of my next international travel adventure (four continents down, three to go), debating sports (let’s Got Mets/Giants!) and dancing around my apartment to stay sane. About Mrs. Swan

The Honeymooners…

May 10th, 2009 @ 4:25 pm by Mrs. Swan

… may not be Mr. Swan and me. Yes… can you imagine that? Me, who takes pride in ticking off yet another country on my travel list, may not actually go on a honeymoon. Don’t get me wrong. We’ll take a trip eventually, but in my mind, it just won’t be a honeymoon. Here are some of the criteria that we have discussed, and for the most part, have agreed on for a honeymoon destination:

  1. We’d like to be in a place that has activities/sites AND be able to relax, preferably by a beach
  2. We’d like to go someplace we’ve never been before
  3. This is always important to me: I’d like to learn about a new culture and to get to experience some of that culture.

Picking a honeymoon is easy for most people, especially here in the U.S. Many people opt to spend a week on the beach in the Caribbean, Mexico, or Hawaii. Well, I have to admit that those options don’t really make Mr. Swan and I jump out of our seats very much.

First, I am from the Caribbean, and most of my family lives there to this day. Seriously, I can pick up my cell phone, call my family, and I’ll have a free place to stay for at least a week (and a few free meals) if I absolutely wanted to. Plus, I hope that the Caribbean one day will offer more/be known for more than just its great beaches and pretty darn good cricket players. There’s lots of interesting history, beauty and smart people there. These countries can and should offer more to the world.

Let’s put it this way: I would never go to Paris and never leave my hotel/resort. Period. I know the Carribean offers lovely, affordable options for an exotic getaway. I encourage anyone going to a Caribbean island (or anywhere else, for that matter) to get out and meet the locals and sample some local food and culture.

Anyway, the Caribbean is out of the question. Getting married during prime hurricane season doesn’t necessarily help either (I hear you, Miss Gloss). Secondly, Mr. Swan has this irrational :) disinterest in Hawaii, and lastly, I’ve been to Mexico.

Also, there is the little pesky issue of… ummm… MONEY. As you can tell from a previous post, budget is our new favorite word, and it’s forcing us to reconsider whether we’ll even have a honeymoon. For someone who has had a bank account dedicated solely to travel, and a mental checklist of trip possibilities, it’s like being LOST.

BUT, if we do have a honeymoon, where would yours truly want to go?

BALI!!!!

I’ve never been to Asia, and I feel like I can’t call myself a seasoned traveler without a trip there. Plus, who doesn’t want to go there? I know other bees have gone there or thought about a trip there, but check out these pictures below. Aren’t these pics reason enough?

While I love the idea of Bali, it is very far, and expensive to get to. A trip that is almost twenty-four hours long, coupled with a hefty price tag on the flight makes a sista kinda think a bit.

Maybe we could go somewhere a bit closer… like Greece!

Still, as much as it would not beas crazy of a plane trip, and even with the decline, the Euro is still kicking the U.S. dollar’s butt, even with the better exchange rate. I’m too old to stay in a hostel, so maybe I need to keep thinking.

The million dollar question will be whether or not we can find our characteristics I mentioned above at a price we might like. Maybe Mr. Swan will surprise me, and we will be able to go to one of my dream locations.

Stay tuned…

Money aside, where is your dream honeymoon locale?

Thanks for the PSA re: the Caribbean. I think it’s important to remind folks that there is more the these places than resorts.

Have you thought of pension stays or couch surfing in europe/greece? (www.couchsurfing.com)
It’s free lodging for travelers from people who live in the area - you get your own personal guide to the city, and new friends along the way!

We’re going to Greece and are SO excited about it! We’re getting a great deal because my parents just bought a worldwide timeshare membership. Sweeeeeet.

We’re going to Greece, too! My mom gave us her British Airways miles, so the flight was a steal! What parts of Mexico have you been to? have you considered going to a city in Mexico you’ve never been to before? Or what about Central or South America? I am dying to go to Brazil or Argentina!

Ah, yes! The chance to learn about foreign cultures and to explore in general are this homebody’s only motivations for leaving the country.

Out of all my fiancé’s suggestions so far, I’m most interested in the Galápagos Islands. Lots of animals to see there.

We went to Phuket, which was AMAZING! It was almost an accident, since we nearly booked for Mozambique but discovered a cheaper trip to Thailand last-minute. Meanwhile, NOW I want to go to Italy! Soo, so badly!

If you’re looking for a thrifty way to travel, you should check out go-today.com. They have some crazy cheap travel packages to basically any location. My fiance’ and I are planning on using this site to book our Ireland honeymoon. Only $700 for round-trip flight+7 days of a rental car–it’s hard to beat!

Bali sounds awesome. We are seriously considering it. Mexico is still an option. Though I am from Mexico City, and traveled many parts of Mexico growing up as a young girl, I know that there is so much culture there that I have yet to experience. I would love to go to non-touristy real Mexico, and see all the history and variety of landscape, tradition, and culture it has to offer.

ooh. I think I would go to the almafi coast.
Ms. Swan - have you considered Thailand? Airfare is pricey, but once you are there you can find many beautiful places to stay on the cheap and the culture and people could not be better ! If you go off the beaten path ie: not phuket, you can find some great deals. Try Ko Samet or Ko Chang.

Ms. Swan, if you like the idea of Greece, you should think about southern Turkey! The dollar is much stronger against the YTL than against the Euro, and there are some amazing sights to see on the Agean and Mediterranean coasts of Turkey. Thailand is a great idea, too, or Vietnam!

My ideal honeymoon would be to take a year off and travel around the world — a safari in South Africa, some time in the winemaking regions of Europe, a visit to Croatia or the Czech Republic, a lot of time in Asia (I’ve never been either), especially Thailand, Vietnam, and Malaysia, down to Australia and New Zealand, island-hop across the Pacific over to South America and visit Peru, Argentina, Brazil, etc, then back to the US to see some places out west that I’ve never been (Yosemite, Grand Canyon). And whatever else could be fit in. Haha, though, THAT’S not going to happen anytime soon…but a girl can dream!

I went to Greece a few years ago with friends and had a FABULOUS time. The weather was gorgeous, the towns were pretty, the food was delicious and there was lots to see. I highly recommend it as a travel destination — honeymoon or otherwise.

My fiance and I are two weeks away from our wedding. We’re going to Belize for the honeymoon. I know that’s out for you since it’s Caribbean, but we’re super excited. It’s got a good mix of activities and things to see and do with downtime for us to relax by the ocean. Can’t wait!

My hubby and I would have loved to go to Greece too if it wasn’t so painfully expensive. He has family there and it would be an amazing adevnture. We really hope to go someday!

We would take at least a month off, and go to about 5 different places so we could spend a fair amount of time at each place

I have been to Greece and it is awesome! I’d go back in a heartbeat.

For a honeymoon though…my dream would either be Bali (good choice, Miss Swan!) or Bora Bora (like Mrs. Tiramisu).

These are beautiful pictures. And I like the three factors you have listed and feel like we also have thought about those as well. We def didnt want to go some place we have been to and we want some place that has things to do but also where we can relax. And those all inclusive places just werent for us. We thought about Hawaii but thought it was more of a non honeymoon type of trip. Ive always want to go to Italy…and some day we will! But for now its probably some place in Florida…and even though its in the US we can still learn about the history and culture…Florida has a lot of Spanish influence as well! Good luck on finding your honeymoon spot or your trip spot! :)

wow - bali was first on my list, too! i also think it would be neat to go gorilla trekking in rwanda, to explore marrakesh, to hike through bhutan. of course, knocking out all three in one honeymoon would be one major feat. =)
