About Mrs. Crab Cake

A Costumed Event

May 11th, 2009 @ 11:51 am by Mrs. Crab Cake

It’s hard to explain to people outside our social circle how much we like to turn everyday events into costume parties. Seriously, people’s birthday celebrations turn into costumed events. So, when Mr. CC wanted to costume our rehearsal dinner, I wasn’t terribly surprised, but I was a little dismayed by the idea of asking our families to dress in costume. A friend of ours suggested a costumed engagement party of sorts, and offered to host it.

The theme was Love Throughout the Ages, and everyone was asked to dress as a famous romantic couple.

Mr. CC and I, given our propensity for military history, dressed in ’40s era attire.

1

Yuck, why is my face so super duper shiny?

Mr. CC’s attire is completely original. I’m wearing the Avian dress from Trashydiva.com

Our friends hosted the party in her parents’ historic home in Uptown.

2

They looked great in the Madam and Monsieur Curie costumes! I especially loved their “radioactive” beers.

Speaking of beers, they were a-plenty. I should have taken a picture of the awesome spread my friend and her mom prepared for the event. There was so much food! Mr. CC and I skipped dinner (I know, not a terribly smart idea) so we’d have room to enjoy all the yummy appetizers!

My family showed too.

3

My sister/MOH, Mother, Mom’s Boyfriend, my Viking sized brother, and his girlfriend.

Their costumes were a surprise (no one would tell me what they were dressing as) and my mom and sister made all of them in the two days preceding the party! They looked great!

Some of the other couples that showed up:

4

Brad and Angelina. They left some of the babies at home.

5

Miami Vice and Cyndi Lauper. Actually, he kinda reminded me of Glen from The Wedding Singer… only in looks though, as he’s a really nice guy. Oh, and her shoes were ROCKIN’!

6

Poseidon and Medusa!

And here I am much, much later in the evening, and several beers in, with Vanessa Minnillo (her husband was dressed as Nick Lachey, but he was lost at the moment).

7

Attack of the shiny face again…sorry!

We really had a great time!

Have you attended a themed engagement party? What was the theme?

This is amazing! You look straight out of a Gil Elvgren piece!

How fun!

We would either be jim and pam from the office, Adam and eve, or Buddy Holly and Mary Tyler Moore. (Big weezer fan here!)

What a cute idea!
P.S. I loved that blue dress so much (when it was almost your rehearsal dinner dress) that I bought one for myself.

Theme engagement party for my FSIL was Western because they got engaged just weeks before moving to Texas (was kinda a going away party as well)… then her bridal shower is on halloween this year (she is getting married in december) so it will obviously be a costume party…

I love themed parties but haven’t been successful at throwing one since college. My friends claim to have “outgrown” them. Boo!

You & all your fellow partiers look amazing!

You look gorgeous! You have just done a dangerous thing, showing me more places where I can find 1940s fashion online—my husband and I are dancers and dabble in the fashion of that era. It is hard to find at a good price though. Got any other cool sources up your (adorable) sleeves?

You look super cute! There really are not enough costume parties. I’m glad the Crabcakes are keeping them alive and well. You’ve mentioned before that you fashion all of your own reenactment dresses. Have you ever posted photos of those ensembles?

Oh my gosh, what a totally fun idea. We threw a theme-to the extreme 50’s shower for my best friend last summer and it was so fun to dress up!

I was confused for a second because it says “themed rehearsal dinner” at the top and I was like “Miss CC’s wedding was this weekend?!?”. lol

I LOVE theme parties. One of the reasons I joined a sorority was for all the theme socials. Sad, huh?

You all look super cute (and no, your face isn’t nearly as shiny as mine in a lot of my photos!). My FSIL & her hubby, Mr. Lab & I, and two more of our friends went as the Flintstones last Halloween!

we are getting married and having a HALLOWEDDING!! couldnt help it, military dictated the dates and wedding hall dictated availability so there you have it. We initially did not want to have people dress up…but our families love the idea and are already planning on it…whether we are into it or not! but really we will prob surprise them ourselves! gonna be a great time, ill post picks in the gallery afterwards (sometime in November)
But Ms CC-loveeeeeee the costumes! youre adorable!

Love the idea of a engagement costume party! I’ve been had a business reproducing historic costumes for years and everyone is always shocked that we’re NOT having a costume/period wedding. This could be a great way to still have some fun with all the friends & family in funny clothes… and then keep them looking presentable at the wedding ;o)

@One Silk Dress: People always want to know if we’re having a period wedding too! I can’t even imagine having to pull that off!

Your dress reminds me so much of Lorelei’s dress in that ep of Gilmore Girls where they dress up all 40s. Love it!
