Coconut Recap: DIY Photo Booth!

May 11th, 2009 @ 3:38 pm by Mrs. Coconut

I can’t remember if I told you about our DIY wedding photobooth. Nonetheless, here’s the scoop: photobooths are freaking expensive! For a fleeting moment, the husband thought he would build one himself. After reality settled in, I called our photographer and asked if we could set one up. I’d buy the fabric and props, and he’d bring the flash, umbrella, camera and tripod. There was a minimal rental fee, and I asked a few of our friends to take turns taking funny pictures. Many of our guy friends who “don’t do the dance thing” were happy to oblige.

{All pictures by Jason Angelini, with some Photoshop editing by yours truly.}

With conventional, freaking expensive photobooths, a group picture like this would be impossible.

@gardenpartygirl: Bought the fabric from JoAnn’s, it was whatever looked funky and was cheap!

@Miss Marshmallow: There were no prints made, we got a DVD of all the images, and I uploaded them to our Flickr account for everyone to download.

No Joke, I have a post it on my desk that says, “Photo Booth, $1400, no less than $900, MAKE IT WORK!”
I appreciate (and so will my FH) your cute, creative, DIY piece of artwork that will surely make an appearance at our wedding!
Thank you for the much needed inspiration and dose of reality I needed to rethink how plain silly I would have been to spend $1400 on a photo booth when we’re trying to keep things under $12000!
But then Mrs. Cupcakes last post was the reason I wrote my post it in the first place! I just love her photos and the photo strips her guests were able to take away with them!

I also love that you posted these photos. I was wondering how a DIY photobooth would turn out. I’m thinking of doing one as well. Good idea to ask your photog for borrowing equipment!

Your guests were pretty loose! Who is the man holding the coasters against his chest? I love that you captured these joyous and fun moments with your guests. Everyone seems to be having a great time!

Was the “photo booth” open all night for guests to take pictures as they pleased? I love the props.

I love your t-shirts! That’s a super cute idea… when did you guys change into them, or were they just over your attire for a quick shot?
Great color and design on the fabric backdrop!

@2sadie2: The photo booth opened up after dinner, and stayed pretty constant throughout the night. I suppose it’s the demand of the crowd that will dictate that.

@xLailax: We changed into them for a quick shot, we wore them the next day on our flight to Costa Rica.

@Miss Marine: So glad I could help, good luck!!

We’re doing a DIY “photobooth” as well. I think I’m getting a little obsessive about all the stuff I’m adding to it. We’ve worked out a way to get two instant prints of each shot, one for our guestbook, one to go into a favor for the guest. We’ve also got various silly props, including dry-erase cartoon speech bubbles and thought bubbles. I’ve got all the details here:

Where did you get the shirts made?
I NEED some with a similar feel.
They’re FABULOUS.
Especially since LSU and Florida are playing the night of my wedding and we could totally rock the look AND check out the game!

@Lish: Strange Cargo in Chicago, I got the idea from Mrs. Peacock. They ship and their shirts feel so amazing! I wear the “I Love Lynn” one to bed and it’s quite hilarious.

They’re fantastic!
It also helps me with a gift for my mom and dad!
I’ve been looking for a vendor that would do that form of lettering for AGES.

Thank you!

Your backdrop is fabulous!
How much fabric did you get for it? And most importantly, how did you hang it?

MsBG, I’ll leave it to the OP to say how she hung it. However, if you want a really simple and inexpensive stand for a backdrop, I’ve got instructions for making one at this link:

@MsBG: It was a year ago, but I believe I purchased 3-4 yards. It was a remnant, so I don’t really recall, but it will be obvious that this is enough. I didn’t hang it, my wedding coordinator did, but I can imagine it involved tacks. Hope that helps!
