Final Floral Touches

May 11th, 2009 @ 6:18 pm by Mrs. Stiletto

I’ve finally started to wrap my head around florals and have a clear idea of what blooms and greens will be present on the day of the wedding. I feel… relieved, and excited about our decisions! I’ve set for us a very small floral budget, so we’ve worked to get the most out of what we’re spending, while trying to have unique and beautiful choices!

As you might recall from my earlier post about bouquets, I’m set on this great dahlia, ranunculus, sweet pea, gardenia and hydrangea bouquet. I may not get to have all of these blooms, but dahlias, ranunculus and hydrangeas are the three I would like to see, with a heavy presence of dahlias and ranunculuses. I was so fortunate to come across this picture, because not only did it provide great inspiration for my bouquet, but there is bridesmaid inspiration, as well! The bridesmaid bouquet features dahlias in a great way, so I’m using this is as a starting point with our florist.

And, of course, how can I forget the green?! I posted about getting some fabulous green integrated into the flowers, and hypericum berries completely fit the bill. All of the guys (with the exception of Mr. S) will wear boutonnieres of green hypericum berries, which make a nice modern lookin’ boutonniere (and are cheaper than other options I was looking at… woo hoo!). I’d also like to integrate these into the bridesmaids’ bouquets to add touches of greens to theirs, while mine will remain snowy white.

But what to do about Mr. S’s boutonniere? I was pretty much at a loss because it’s my understanding that it’s traditional to use a bloom from the bride’s bouquet for the groom’s boutonniere. Hmmm.

Fortunately, I came a across these great options (whew!). This white ranunculus boutonniere is probably my favorite, but I think that’s also because I’ve recently fallen head over heals for those silly little ranunculus blooms… they’re just too cute!

But then, of course, I found this great dahlia boutonniere (just imagine this in white… but isn’t this orange version with the tie fabulous?!). It’s so simple and cute, and I assume this bloom would hold up quite well during a day of hugging.

I thought seeing a “run down” of all of the flowers would help me make a decision… but I love both of these options! I am leaning toward one, but which would you choose?

I love the ranunculus! They look like beautiful cut off roses.

Hmmm, both are great — the ranunculus looks more “romantic” and the dahlia (especially with a funky colored tie, like the one pictured) looks more modern…which would fit your wedding vision better?

Mmmm decisions, decisions… I like the dahlia boutonniere the best.

@Miss Peep Toe: What did your florist say about the dahlia boutonnieres?

All the guys in my wedding had the green hypericum berries and some bluperium (sp). The groom had that as well as a rose that matched the ones in my bouquet. I loved the way the splash of green looked.

I turned to my FI to ask which bout he liked the best. He preferred the ranunculus. He said the dahlia looked “too big.” Personally, I LOVE the dahlia and told him that he’ll wear what I tell him to wear, damn it. Lol. I don’t think you can lose either way, you have great options. Also, we have the same colors and you’ve given ME inspiration with this post :) Thanks!

I think the dahlia bout goes better with what I’ve seen so far of your wedding. They’re both great choices, though.

@Miss French Bulldog: My florist said that Dahlia’s wilt too easily to be bouts (and in hair). And basically that they would be brown by the end of the night. BUT I have no real experience with this. Anyone else??

@Miss Peep Toe: I heard the same thing from our florist. I wanted pom-pom dahlias in my bouquet and one for my FI’s bout, but the florist mentioned the fact that they wilt easily and may break during the day because the heads are so much larger than the stems. It’s unfortunate because they’re incredibly cute.

Uuuuugh, I wanted ranunculus bouts VERY much, but the 2 florists I interviewed BOTH said they make terrible bouts.. the petals fall off and they wilt quickly. The hypercium berries look good and “manly” though ;)

I love the look of that orange dahlia, but based on what everyone else has said, neither those or the ranunculus are very good options… I guess since I know you don’t want dead or squished flowers, the hypercium berries it is!

This is a tough decision! I like the berries. I also like the ranunculus but it looks a little “heavy” to be pinned on. I also like the look of the dahlia, but I agree it could get smushed. They’re all great.

@Miss Peep Toe: Thanks for the heads up on the dahlia…boo!

@hollienoel: …and, thanks for the heads up on the ranunculus bout. Err…

Looks like I might be back to the drawing board on Mr. S’s bout! I definitely want it to be a white flower - the berries are for the groomsmen - any suggestions anyone? :)

I wanted a peony bout for my groom - a similiar look to the ranunculus - but the florist said the bloom is too large for man’s lapel and that a smaller flower works better.

Our men are wearing a rose or a tulip. A mini calla lilly is also a very classic look. A little too traditional for me, but may fit in perfectly with your vision of white!

I love the dahlia. It just looks so open and beautiful. The rananculus looks more coy. But they are both beautiful, so no matter what you go with your guests will be ooohing and aaahing!
