MOB Dress Shopping…

May 11th, 2009 @ 12:27 pm by Mrs. Gloss

My mom was in town this weekend to help me with the invitations (a post is coming soon, I promise!) and to celebrate Mother’s Day, so we took advantage of our time together and decided to search for her wedding day dress! In my mind, my mom is wearing a short dress in some type of champagne-y color, or maybe a light taupe or oyster. We looked everywhere for something in a style like this:

A simple sheath dress with cute bolero… shouldn’t be too hard to find, right?

WRONG!

Some of our favorites were:

MOB Dress Shopping... : wedding dress Mob 2 image

Option #1: This little bridesmaid’s dress is from Ann Taylor, at almost $300. It’s a little more than we were looking to spend, but it’s still a contender. BTW, it looks way better on my mom (and the mannequin, for that matter) than it does on the model above.

Option #2: She tried on this dress at Banana Republic in navy, and I really didn’t think I would like it, but it was actually a nice mix of conservative mom in the front, and then sexy party in the back. It was really quite cute, but she didn’t think she should wear navy, since my bridesmaids are.

Option #3: We found this little sheath at Lord and Taylor, but they didn’t have the size we needed (of course). You can’t really tell from the picture, but there were threads of gold throughout, and an interesting texture/design. We liked that it was simple and classic.

Option #4: (the first image) is by Tahari, and they didn’t have this style at the two Nordstroms we visited.

Needless to say, we left empty handed. So, I have two questions for you:

  1. What color is your mom wearing?
  2. Where did you end up finding her dress?

Can you see about ordering the Tahari dress from Nordstrom? It’s very pretty, and so versatile with the great little jacket!

My Mom hasn’t completely figured it out yet, but she’s thinking she would like to wear some kind of bronze or dark purple. I’m having a fall wedding, with bridesmaids wearing brown. I also think something gold-ish might be nice. My Mom’s worried about starting this dress shopping process. Hopefully I can help her out next time I go home to visit!

Look at Talbots! My mom found an adorable soft blue dress with an adorable bolero like your first image. It was a lifesaver!

!! She is gonna be one stylin’ Mama LG! I love those dresses. :)
We found my mom’s dress at Ross. It is black chiffon with wide spaghetti straps, empire waist, v-neck, and it is tea length. It has some really pretty beadwork at the waist line. Our wedding party is wearing more cocktail party ish attire, and my ‘maids are wearing black cocktail dresses with teal shoes and jewelry. I also have little teal feather fascinators for the bm’s to wear, and mom might get one of those but a different style.

My mom is wearing EXACTLY what you described! Champagne colored short dress with a little jacket. Check Macys! http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=364302&CategoryID=22120 (search Calvin Klein evening dresses if that link doesn’t work)

My mother’s wearing green because it’s her favorite color and it’s also one of my wedding colors. We found her dress online at Nordstrom, but it was a long, hard search!

My mother wore a lavenderish/pewter dress that came with a matching lace bolero. It was so pretty on her. I found it on the clearance rack at Dillards. Sometimes good things show up in unexpected places. The problem with the clearance rack in department stores is that you can’t really search it online.

My mom is wearing either a fuschia cocktail dress from Ann Taylor, or a kelly green cocktail dress from ralph lauren. I honestly don’t care what the hell she wears– she’s got great style, classic, etc., and she’s wearing it not me. More power to her!

One of my wedding colors is pink, and my mom wore light pink - she actually got a pattern from JoAnn’s and made her jacket/long skirt combo herself out of silk - http://www.projectwedding.com/photo/list/kitty25kat25?photo_to_show=857526&thumbs_page=18

She also bought an alternative short beige dress from Tahari that she really liked, but she ended up going with the long dress. Tahari has a great selection!

my mom wanted to buy a bone colored lacy floor length dress with a jacket, but I asked her not to because it was so close to the color of my [very] ivory dress.

She ended buying a shimmery “stone” colored dress with a lighter jacket and no lace from Carson’s, after a VERY long and tiring search for MOB dresses!

My Mom has had the same struggle. She ended up with an Adrianna Papel Dress from Nordstroms. They had a dress that sounds like what you are looking for champagne with a jacket that my Mom liked. She ended up with a pale green dress though.

My mom struggled as well. She didn’t want something that looked, well, old. She ended up finding a cute dress at Nordstroms, that is blue underneath with a brown lace overlay. Its a beautiful dress.

My mom found a great chocolate and turquoise outfit at Chico’s. It wasn’t what I had originally envisioned but was gorgeous on her!

My mom finally found a short Tahari dress and bolero like the first one pictured. Hers is mint/kiwi green, which is our accent color. She’ll be glad to hear that lots of other moms are wearing dresses in a similar style because my grandma told her that it was too short! In an act of 55 year old rebellion, she kept the dress anyway.

My mom bought her dress from Chadwick’s about a month ago. It’s a little more casual than some that you had looked at, but with some great jewels and shoes, I love it! Depending on what sizes you might be looking for, they do have some great options that come from Petite 0 to a women’s 16 or 18.

The Tahari dress is available from Overstock.com at a large discount ($114 not $198). It looks a little different in their picture, but is exactly the same.
