My Something… Homemade

May 11th, 2009 @ 5:08 pm by Mrs. Deviled Egg

Something old? I don’t have anything right now. New? I guess everything––the dress, shoes, jewelry, etc. Something borrowed? I have no clue what I’ll be using. Blue? Again… nada.

But, I am very lucky to have something homemade by my mom. For the last few weeks she’s been making this:

What is it?

It’s lace trim to go around a wedding hankie. She’s almost done, because the side she’s working on is the 4th side of the square. Once she’s finished, she’ll tack it onto a hankie and it will be ready for me to carry down the aisle.

The method of her lace-making is bobbin lace. The bobbins are crossed over one another in a pattern, weaving the threads to make the shape of the lace. Some of the bobbins are wooden, and others are glass. The beads give them weight, and somehow it all comes into play in creating the finished product.

My mom made hankies for my oldest sister’s wedding, and she made lace to trim my other sister’s wedding veil. I feel really fortunate that my mom is making me such an awesome keepsake. This picture is a little blurry, but here’s a close-up of the lace in progress:

I’ve watched her move the bobbins and follow the pattern, but I’m still a little clueless as to how she actually makes lace this way. I’m super impressed by it, and maybe someday I’ll have her teach me how to do it. She taught herself how to do this without ever having taken a lesson.

I’ll be sure to get some photos of the finished product to share with all of you. Even though the hankie isn’t a surprise, I’m guessing I won’t get it until the wedding day.

Whatspecial keepsake items will you have with you on your wedding day? Are any homemade?

It is absolutely gorgeous. But can I make a suggestion? You say someday. I suggest that when all this wedding stuff is behind you, you learn to do it as soon as possible. There were so many things that I swore I was going to have me mother teach me. Recipes, crafts… and I never got the chance. We always think there will be time, but sometimes things happen before we get the chance. Sorry to be a downer, and I don’t mean to be. It’s just that this is such a special and beautiful thing that she is doing. You know something you will have forever, and I am sure that you would love to do it for your daughter some day. Take it from me when I say, make it a priority. Again, it is so gorgeous, you mom is very talented.

What a beautiful gift and a lovely family heirloom this will be. I second lobstergirls suggestion to have your mom show you how to do this ASAP. Time with your parents is prescious, and if they can show you how to do something it’s a gift. Lace making is not common these days and would be a great craft to learn if you have the desire and patients to. I’ve thought about learning but haven’t anyone to teach me. I’ve seen a few posts on craft forums on bobbin lace around the web. Now I’ll have to check up on this again for my things to learn.
My mom is actually growing trees for me in her garden I plan to use as decorations for the wedding and after to plant on property of our own when we get some. She has always loved to garden. It’s a past time she shared with my grand parents on both sides. Her family have been farmers for generations and my fathers father won awards at fairs for his peonies and loved to garden. If we were getting married in the spring I’d definately use his flowers in my boquets. I plan to make the tables for the reception and will have my dad help me stain the table tops. After the wedding we’ll use the wood to make smaller tables and stools for the garden area.

How amazing! What a priceless keepsake! When you described you watching her make it, I created a perfect picture of a Daughter leaning over her Mother’s shoulder. Too bad there wasn’t a photographer present!

That lace is soo pretty! I would love to be able to do that! My fiance’s grandma embroidered a hankerchief for me to carry down the aisle. It is a tradition in their family. I am also carrying a hankerchief that belonged to my grandpa. He passed away and it is my way of having him with me on my wedding day.
