Mrs. Yorkie's Picture
Mrs. Yorkie, Miami Age and Occupation: 30, Graduate Admissions Coordinator Fiance's Age and Occupation: 41, Asst. Professor Engagement Date: July 3, 2008 Wedding Date: June 2009 Venue: Red Fish Grill About Me: I’m an East Coast girl with a crafty streak who loves traveling, photography and being outdoors (barefoot, if possible). When I do have to wear shoes, I prefer Mizunos, and have worn out a few pairs running marathons. I have a thing for chai, crossword puzzles, Apples to Apples, The Office and my real-life Yorkie, Bella. My West Coast transplant, Mr. Yorkie, roots for the Buckeyes, loves baseball, and climbs mountains for fun. We’re planning a fun little seaside wedding filled with handmade details and vintage charm. I can hardly wait!
About Mrs. Yorkie

There’s no doubt that our wedding is going to be a kid-friendly event. With eight little ones ranging from the ages of 3 to 10 in the wedding party, how can’t it be?

Mr Yorkie’s three nieces and my cousins’ combined three daughters and two sons will form the petite parade that will lead us down the aisle, setting a light-hearted and joyous tone for our beach-side ceremony.

In hopes of keeping these special little guests happy (and out of trouble) during the reception, I’ve been collecting ideas for fun activities to provide at their table. One of the things that I’m planning to do is to make custom coloring books out of digital photos of Mr Yorkie and me with our family and friends. I’m sure that the kids will get a kick out of seeing themselves in a coloring book. Heck, I’m excited about it, and I’m almost 31!

On a recent trip to Target, a single pink enameled pail on a shelf in the $1 Spot caught my eye. Immediately, I knew that this lonely little bucket was going to serve a purpose in my wedding… housing colored pencils, of course! Because the shade of pink doesn’t quite match the fuchsia color that has become prominent in our details, I came up with the idea of helping it fit in by decorating the pail with what has become our “official logo”.

With a few supplies that I already had on hand, I was able to complete this simple DIY project in under 15 minutes! All it took was a print out of our digital silhouettes scaled to size, a small piece of black adhesive-backed vinyl (I used ProvoCraft’s Cuttables for the Cricut), a craft knife with a new blade, and some tape. Here’s how it all came together…

All it needs now is a fun grosgrain ribbon to dress it up a little more. Polka dots, perhaps? :)

Will you be welcoming children to your wedding? If so, what kinds of activities are you planning for your youngest guests?

Great idea. I hadn’t thought about entertaining the children, since they’ll be seated at their own table, I think. Or is that a bad idea?

So cute! I found coloring books for the kiddos in the $1 Spot at Target!

Score on the bucket! Great find! We’re aren’t having young children @ our wedding, but for a friend’s wedding I made coloring books and gave them pipe-cleaners. The pipe-cleaners were a BIG hit, they made hats and bracelets :)

OMG! I’ve seen this on one of your posts before but I didn’t realize this pail is from Target! That is so funny, I got some of the blue ones for use with the kids stuff, too!

We crafties think alike!

I’m making a crossword, and some color pages too. When I’m done I’ll PM you and show you what I came up with. :)

Oh, and I vote polka dots! Maybe even some of the ribbon that looks like chains of hearts. :)

WAY cute. :) We’re not inviting children (there is only one little kid in my *extended* family, and he is an infant and will be of perfect screaming toddler age by the time of the wedding), but if we had friends with young kids I would totally be stealing your coloring book idea. ;)

Cute idea! We’ll have 25 kids out of the 100 total. I am hesitant to use markers/crayons/etc. in case someone draws on the walls. I definitely want to include glow necklaces. Those are cool. :-)

That is too cute! We plan on having around 20-30 kids running around our wedding so we will definitely keep them busy. I have not bought then yet, but I’m keeping my eye out for some cheap coloring books…I’m waiting for back to school to get some cheap crayons….and I plan on including a bottle of bubbles for them as well. I am not sure if the parents will be too happy about that, but there is a lot of open area for them to roam outside so I think they will love it!

That’s awesome. I just like the bucket! We just found out we’re having 3 kids, they’re all siblings, so hopefully their momma is bringing them something to do…

Depending on your venue, a good friend of mine used the coat closet for a playroom. It gave the kids their own space, they brought legos, blocks, barbies, etc.

I actually just bought my kids’ boxes stuff tonight. I got them Colorworks markers and pages so the markers only work on the paper, not the table cloth. I also got them glow bracelets (15 for $1 at Michael’s!) and those little capsules that expand when you put them in water. I would suggest Michaels because they have a lot of cheap kids stuff that is perfect.

I love this! And that’s so fun that you’re having 8 kids in your bridal party! I thought our 5 under the age of 12 was a lot! :)

Such an adorable idea! We are not having kids at the wedding…my family is so large that to include them would add 50 to the guest list. However, if we were having kids, this is such a fun idea for them!

What a cute idea Miss Yorkie! I can’t wait to see what the color books look like. I love making myself into a coloring book or cartoon on my Kodak program on my computer! I wish we were having more kids at our wedding…but then again I just picture those kids running around knocking stuff down and not listening to their parents…these are the kids I know! But the kids/teens that will be coming are well behaved and are my future step kids…and I think they will be dancing with me on the floor all night! The flower girl however is only 2…but Im sure her mom will bring toys and stuff for her to play with…it wont be so bad for her since its an afternoon wedding…nap time will probably be on time when all is said and done! I always love your crafts Miss Yorkie! Great way of thinking of the kids.

I’m still trying to come up with ideas, I’m a littler wary of colouring as I’ve known an instance where the kids kindly re-decorated the venue with their colouring.

Thanks for all of the additional ideas, ladies! Pipe cleaners and glow necklaces might just make an appearance! Our kiddie table will be safely located outdoors and the walls in the venue are unplastered limestone, so I think we’re good with the pencils. Definitely something to consider, though!

I love the silohuettes! Very cute!
Our reception has to be kid friendly. I myself have two little girls, both high maintenance (and my eight year old is autistic, so she’s really a handful), plus a ton of neices and nephews running around. I’m having an area for kids with activities and snacks and a dress up trunk. I am also having three babysitters there for the reception to keep the kiddos occupied, and to keep an eye on the kids. I have been to so many parties or events where kids are just roaming around with no supervision bc the parents assume someone else they know will occupy their kids, and the kids get bored, so they turn into brats. I feel pretty strongly about this! LOL! I’m always the mom who ends up sitting at the kids table though, emptying out my purse to find activities for all the little kids at parties to do bc no one else thought to do anything for them! Who carries Legos in her purse? Oh yeah, that’s me! So anyway, while I love my friends and family I know what will happen once the cocktails start, and as much as I say I would like all the kids out of the reception by 9pm, people always think their kids are excluded from that rule. Whatever, I don’t want to worry about it! I will be paying those girls in the kids area very well to keep my stress level low. I also changed my daughters flower girl dresses from $170 gorgeous, twinkly numbers to something from Target for like $25, because I don’t want to worry about it.
I love the pipe cleaners!! They can make favors to give to Grandmas and stuff like that!
@Shay, I love the wedding cake idea!! Is TwinkleKids a website?

We’re still not sure if we want kids there, but I’ll definitely be keeping this idea in the back of my mind if we do decide to have them! =) I’d probably take a break to do some colouring, too — it’s one of my favourite things to do! ;)
