Mrs. D'orsay's Picture
Mrs. D'orsay, Baltimore/Lancaster UK Age and Occupation: 24, nonprofit communications Fiance's Age and Occupation: 29, Web site developer and designer; co-owner of men's skincare shop Engagement Date: August 10, 2008 Wedding Date: August, 2009 Venue: Oakland Manor About Me: I'm a Maryland raised environmental policy wonk/activist/organizer and communications aficionado. In the past year I've lived in Baltimore, MD, Tucson, AZ, Miami, FL and Lancaster, England. In my not so spare time I enjoy planning trips with Mr. D' Orsay, visiting friends and family and crafting like a mo-fo. I also enjoy modern dance classes, rugby and soccer but have been banned by my mother, MOHs, and Mr. D' Orsay from playing till after the wedding. I have an unnatural addiction to cheese and shoes, but love Mr. D' Orsay more than either and can't wait to become Mrs. D' Orsay!

Fontalicious

May 12th, 2009 @ 4:59 pm by Mrs. D'orsay

Once I figured out how to download a font, it came time for Mr. D and me to choose a font to address the invites with. Here are the fontalicious contenders; I made the last names the names of the fonts, in case you’re wondering which ones they are.

We could really use your help on this decision, but there are 2 key points to consider:

  1. Is it readable? Post codes are very important (especially in the UK) and we need to make sure they can be delivered. For example, in the Snell Roundhand font the post code is LA5 9QQ…those don’t look like Qs to me…
  2. Will I be able to trace it? I’m not the kind of girl who loooooves paper goods. I see them, and appreciate their aesthetic - but really, I just don’t want to use labels, and I can’t just print on the envelopes (they’re a dark chocolate brown).

Essentially, will I be able to trace the font without developing the desire to strangle anything?

First up - Adine Kirnberg and English (please ignore the cursor by the zip code *doh!*):

Next is Chopin and Ecolier:

We also tried Snell Roundhand and Edwardian Script:

And last, but not least - Savoey LET:

Which font should I use?

I voted for English, but I think Snell Roundhand might also be easy to trace over.

I think the last one is pretty and most legible. How FUN is playing with fonts?! Why can’t we always be getting married and sending out invites…le sigh.

I would print out all these in grayscale like you’re going to on the envelopes and try tracing a line or two of all of them. I am doing the same thing (got the idea from you–thanks!) and found that some fonts were MUCH harder to trace and make look good than others. For instance, Chopin looks beautiful, but it was super hard for me to trace. Unless you’re good with a calligraphy pen, it’s hard to do the smaller and bigger parts, if that makes sense.
So I’d choose the one that looks the best after tracing and is easiest for you!

I voted for Savoey! That was my favorite one and I didn’t have to strain my eyes too bad. Don’t you just love playing with fonts? =)

Have you thought of using a different font for the actual address part?
I recently did something like this - I used a swirly pretty font for the names, and an easily readable font (like papyrus) for the actual address.

The Qs in Snell Roundhand are just cursive capital Qs, but do you want to risk whether your postal carrier remembers that from third grade?

I prefer English or Savoy. It would be one thing if you were able to print the fonts directly onto your envelopes. Then I would go with the more intricate fonts. But I don’t think I could get through one address in Chopin without going nuts!

I voted for the English, but I also like the Savoey - although I think the English looks “fancier” without being too fussy.

And I agree with you, the Q’s in Snell Roundhand don’t look like Q’s at all . . . I’da thought they were 2’s.

I voted for “English,” even though I like “Edwardian Script” best, because I think it will be the easiest to trace over and is the most easily readable.

English and Savoey are both great! They’re both easy to read too.

I absolutely love the look of Chopin and hope to use it for my envelopes! It does look a little challenging to trace though.

I think the English font is most legible and also it’s just so pretty! I totally hear you on the postal codes, too. I used a font that looked a lot like caligraphy and I think that’s why 2 of my international invitations never made it to their destinations.

I voted for Ecolier based solely on how easy it would be to trace. BUT I love Ms. Rye Bread’s idea of using a scripty font for the names, then using a block font for the actual address.

ps - I also discovered that you can combine fonts and it will look fine-for instance, if you want to use Snell but those Q’s will give the postman fits, use another font that kinda looks similar but is more legible just for the Q’s!

If the envelopes are dark brown, I’d say you should go with labels (look up the Martha Stewart wraparounds). The reason being, it will be much easier for the postal workers to read, especially since you are sending some to international addresses.

I picked English because it’s very easy to read and it looks like it would be easy to trace as well.

I liked the Savoey. Easy to read, but still fancy!
