About Mrs. Swan

Hair Here?

May 12th, 2009 @ 12:22 pm by Mrs. Swan

So I’m finally going to talk about one of the biggest challenges for me in terms of planning. It’s been even harder than my dress, I think. It’s my HAIR. As I’ve alluded to earlier, I have locs. I don’t call them dreadlocks or dreads because to be honest, there is nothing to “dread” about them. :) I think people have many ill-conceived ideas about people like me, simply because we choose to wear our hair this way. Common misconceptions include:

  1. We are dirty individuals - I bathe every day. I like to look good, and I think I smell pretty good, too. I take care of my hair. I’m at a salon almost every four to six weeks. I take pride in my appearance.
  2. We can’t get jobs - I have had multiple, very good jobs at some point in my life already. I am now in a job that requires representing important individuals, so I think I have pretty job prospects. I will admit that this has never always been true. Thank God for living in 2009.
  3. We are counter-cultural/trying to make a statement - This one might be a fair assumption. Although I have to admit, for me and many Black women I know who choose to wear their hair this way, it’s because we like the way it looks, as well as the opportunity to wear our hair without chemical and/or heat straightening. Also, it requires little to no daily upkeep, which is great for a lazy person like me. ;)
  4. We all smoke drugs of some form - I never have, and never will… moving on…
  5. We are adherents to Rastafarianism - I grew up going to church in a denomination very similar to the Lutheran/Presbyterian church. I would now consider myself a nondenominational Christian. Obviously, none of that is Rastafarian related. Having done research into Rastafarianism, I think it’s a pretty interesting religion/cultural expression. Some recommended reading on Rastafarianism: “Rasta and Resistance” by Horace Campbell.

April marked five years that I’ve been wearing my hair this way. I love it, and at this point, I have no plans to  change my hair (yes, Mama Swan, I’m not changing it). As the wedding approaches and my hair keeps growing, I’ve been trying to figure out some ways to style my hair and to possibly do hair trials.

I say possibly do hair trials, because I am contemplating how to. I can’t curl my hair with a curling iron. Usually curling my locs that requires my hair to be roller-set when it’s wet, and then sitting under the dryer for about an hour! One of the burdens of my hair, I guess, is that as it grows, my hair appointments grow longer. Usually they take between 2.5 to 3 hours on a good day. I think this means that I’ll need to stagger out my hair trials? Hmm…

I think my plan will be to at least start figuring out what I like, and what I don’t like for a style. I’m also thinking about possibly cheating on my hairstylist, but that’s another post.

Here’s what I think I want:

A soft, basic, but pretty updo

(source)

I think this will look great with my dress. Also, it would get my very long hair off my neck in the middle of the August heat.

I also like when my hair has texture, e.g., when it’s curled with a roller set or when two or three individuals locs are twisted or braided together and loosened to produce a “crimp” look like this:

(source)

Sorry for the picture of the hardcore looking dude, but it’s a good representation of crimped locs. He looks pretty mean, doesn’t he? I would mostly likely wear my hair half-up if I chose something like this. I’ve been wearing my hair like this a lot lately.

As I said before I also really enjoy wearing my hair curly. I think this is a fun look that can be pinned up to add some drama. I’m not sure what kind of style I would want, but here’s a good example:

(source)

I have choices, but I think the journey of trying to figure out how I’ll wear my hair will be an interesting one. Stay tuned for this one, as well.

Looking forward to hearing more! It’s a shame for the dude in the picture, but to me, the middle one really looks like a great bridal style! ;-)

Love you swan! I wear my hair in its natural state and have gotten some job flack (never from the job, but from people asking if they think its professional). There are so many assumptions tied up in black hair. I am glad to see that you are talking about your experience. Love your inspiration photos.

I really like the first option! And I love your locs!

The hardcore locs guy cracked me up, I had to show it to a coworker and she snorted her coffee. I mean really, what is so serious dude? Lighten up, life isn’t so mean.

Wow! I really love the up-do in the first picture! It’s amazingly beautiful, and makes me sooo wish I could have “locs” too!

Oh, how contradictory–I like how #1 is so simple and sets off the texture but I like how #3 is so romantic, like a BBC production. ^_^

I am so glad that you are a Bee!
It is really nice to have such diversity on here. I would have never thought about this issue of trying to figure out your wedding hair when you have “locks”. :-) I am really glad you are on here

I love the first and third options for a wedding. However, it all is based on the dress and the time of day. The 2nd option seems more for a casual day time wedding with a simple and casual dress. I like them all (sans the guy mad dogging the photo). So glad to see you on here. I have followed your blog over the past couple of months. :-)

I know lots of brides drastically change themselves for their wedding day. I must say it’s nice to see that you are trying to keep as much of yourself as you can :)

I think up with some of the curl is going to be great especially to avoid heat. I cannot imagine a 2-3 hr hair appt. Your trial is also going to have to be about timing how long it all takes.

Thanks for sharing the misconceptions about your hair. I had no idea that locks could be curled and I am all for a hairstyle where it means little daily work.

I’d definitely suggest staggering the hair trials. I love reading your stuff SO much. I’m not just a Black bride, I’m a natural bride. It’s like I don’t exist on the internet. :(

Ironically I’m going to be starting a set of locs in August about two months after my wedding. (I’m getting micros and yeah…..gonna get my money’s worth out of them:D)

I look forward to pics!!

I’m thinking of cutting my locks after the wedding. It will be 10 years, so I think 2010 will be a new decade of hair for me.

I think the style will depend on your dress.

I wanted to wear mine like your boy Jerome in the picture :). However, with a halter I think it looks best up, closer to picture number 3.

Thanks for this post.

i will say that there is a major difference between your locs and most other unkempt locs that warrent those misconceptions. obviously you didn’t just stop combing your hair one day, you know? lol.

and that dude looks pretty comma mean. hehehe. but i do like the crimping in his hair. maybe you can do a half up-half down with crimping? i think that would look nice!

Interesting post! I really like the “crimped” look. I think it would be so pretty for a wedding, but I totally get wanting to keep it off your neck. Maybe some combination of the crimped look and an updo? Btw, I think that guy is trying to look tough to make up for the fact that his hair is so soft and pretty. :)

I love the crimped look of dreadlocks, I wish my hair could do that… I probably could do without the 3 hr hair appts though ;)

I like your idea of doing crimped with half up, I think it would look great, and since you said you’ve been wearing your hair like that, it would be an accurate representation of “you” and your style. I can’t wait to see what you choose.

I like the first one. I also agree w/ what tea said — your locs look markedly different than some I’ve seen on others that I must admit do sometimes make me fall into thinking of some of those misconception (namely, the “dirty” one). You, on the other hand, look very fresh, locs included! I’m sure no one will think less on your wedding day — the styles above would all be stunners.

I love the first one. The contrast between the soft form of the style and the texture of the locs is just fantastic. I’ve always wanted dreadlocks, but I’ve never seen an example of blonde locs that don’t look dirty and weird. :P

I can’t believe those stereotypes still exist. I grew up and continue to live in a very culturally diverse part of the country, so I guess that’s why it surprises me. I feel like I see a lot of business women wearing their hair like yours- it happens so frequently I probably couldn’t give you an estimate, plus its not something I mentally catalog, lol

I actually love the third one, myself, I think the high up-do creates a really fantastic shape!

@heather25 - Word. I’ve gotten flak but more from my Mom and not job related. What can you do? She loves me anyway. There is so much wrapped up in hair choices (that’s probably a whole other blog!)

@kusinera - Aww, thanks!

@yogigal - WOW! Ten years! I’m actually looking forward to the day when I will cut mine completely. I am thinking of doing a post-wedding trim.

@maryalice - I tend to wear my hair down, although it also gets thrown back in a ponytail when it gets closer to the time for a visit to the salon!

@alwayschasing…- thanks for reading. :) There are more hair posts coming.

@denise- Oh yeah. I’ve definitely heard of Renaissance Hairtopia. There are quite a few great styles on their site. I’ll be doing more hair posts in the future.

@sacredangel- I hear you, hun! I went natural 8 years before I locked my hair and even then it was a struggle. There were very resources out there. I’ll be doing more hair posts (including one non-loced one), I promise.

@Mrs. Corn/Sakoro - Our friend in the pic probably knew this would happen at some point. :) I bet he would wear something frilly down the aisle with some Timberlands :)

@arobb81 - No one really bats an eyelash at me, but in general I try to make sure that I am professionally dressed or at least don’t look dumpy. Ultimately, people are going to judge you for what you have to say and how you treat them. At least, that’s what I’d like to think.

Wow. I have been gone from WB for a while now, and I must say that I’m so glad that you’re here. Lack of diversity is why I left the website to begin with, which was disappointing to me because I think this is such a great website/resource. Your hair post is awesome because you don’t have a “traditional” hair style, so you have to come up with other ways to wear your hair on your wedding day. Personally, I think the first style or something similar to it would be gourgeous. My aunt has locks and she gets them twisted into an updo, sometimes with shells attached and it looks really beautiful. I know I’m on the late freight, but since I’ve been gone a while, I just want to say again how happy I am to see you on WB!

my best friend does these pin curls with her locks. I have no idea how but they are not like spiral when she lets them out they more just curl on the end and frame her face. They look beautiful and very bridal.

Love the post (and am I the only one who, while recognizing his mean-muggin’, thought the Middle Man was kinda hott?)! I’d go for number 1 also, though I agree with someone else upthread that half up would be beautiful as well (if the weather turned out to be not-so-hot).

I like all 3, but I cannot stop laughing at the dude in the middle!!! I am wearing my hair half up in (the end of) June, so here comes the frizz & sweat! You should choose what you love best–it’s your big day. Perhaps a convertible style–one that can easily be pulled up after the bulk of the photos? And you mean to tell me that you have a job and don’t do drugs?!? HAHAHA!
