You Down With OOT?

May 12th, 2009 @ 3:15 pm by Mrs. Peep Toe

Since almost all of our guests are from out of town, we need some serious Out of Town (OOT) Bags. While I was watching my pennies spent on the OOT bags, I still wanted to make sure we put a little bit of SF and a little bit of ourselves into the bags.

First up, the perfect bag:

From the Target $1 bin, they’re reusable and the perfect size. Run, don’t walk to your nearest Target to get your own. They also come in blue and tan.

As for what to put in the bag, some of the Peeps’ favorite things, of course:

We both love Goldfish; Mr. Peep always buys Mentos when we are on a road trip; and I can’t live without Orbit’s Mojito Mint gum!! Plus, we scored some free SF Zagats from a family member—perfect for the foodies! And we bought some handy dandy ’Green Living for Dummies’ handbooks.

We also plan on adding these glass containers full of M&Ms and salted almonds:

Here are all the glass containers that we’ve been collecting:

And here are all the OOT Bags together.

Some other items that I am considering adding:

An Advil travel pack (my drug of choice):

Source

The new Colgate Wisp—it’s a disposable travel toothbrush and toothpaste all in one:

source

They run about a dollar a toothbrush, but I am afraid that if people do bring their own toothbrushes, then these will just go to waste.

And finally, something I always seem to need, but never have during a trip full of tears of joy:

So hive, what’s missing from our OOT bags? What would you appreciate as a wedding guest?

I’m intrigued by those new Wisps — have you tried them?

Just to add a little spice, you could do really festive and colorful tissue packs, they have them @ Michael’s for $1 a pack! I got them for my bridesmaids and think their adorable! :)

YEAH YOU KNOW ME!!!!…um, sorry, I HAD to! Your bags are super cute. I’m all over the bags (I might ask someone to pick one up for me) and loving the goodies inside. Now I’d really like some fruit flavored mentos…

I’m not sure how your guests will be getting around, but perhaps a simple street map or public transit map? Or suggestions of places to rent bikes? That might help them explore the area and find the delicious restaurants you mention while keeping with your “green” theme.

Love it! These are too cute. I always like getting a bottle of water…always good for the morning after the wedding if it’s a good reception :)

Maybe to go along with the Zagats, the business card(s) for one or more of your favorite spots?

@Miss D’orsay: Love it!! I’ve had the song in my head for days!!

@Miss Scarlet: You’re one step ahead of me!! Hopefully I’ll post on our map before too long.

@Miss Stiletto: Mr. Peeps wants to avoid adding extra plastic to the recycle bin. I am hoping the guests will be ok with a glass of water from the hotel room.

@Miss Gem: Great advice!!

I agree with Stiletto, The water is key (even if they are those litthe half bottles or pods.)

I am loving the Target bags!! Might have to have my stepmom go make a stop for me (unfortunately they are FAR and FEW between in NYC :P)

Cute idea with the reusable bags! And water is always a good thing (as much as I dislike water bottles)!

I really like the bags. I might have to run out and get some for my OOT bags too! I agree with the bottle of water.

I would sub water for the toothbrush. While it’s a good idea, everyone will be bringing one. The bags are great!

Instead of a disposable bottle of water, how about a reusable water bottle!

The wisps seem neat but kind of non-eco-friendly. I think the bag looks great as is! –or if you can spring for a reusable water bottle, I like that suggestion.

I’m loving the “green” theme… especially the repurposed jars! I’ve seen Nalgene-like bottles in the $1 bin at Target recently… those might be nice to add.

Love this idea, and when we’ve done hospitality bags for guests using the “green” method-they go wild and really appreciate the energy saved!

If you still want to use the wisps, I think it’s fine, even if they do bring their own toothbrush, they’ll get used at some point in the future I’m sure. I like the idea of a reusable water bottle.

What about a 3 day MUNI pass and map? That gets expensive, but maybe a map to the nearest station that sells them? Hand-drawn map to the nearest beach for normally landlocked guests?

A custom personalized Do Not Disturb sign might be cute. “Do Not Disturb - We’re either preparing for or recovering from the Peep Toe Nuptials”

If you want to risk sounding a little preachy, the Monterey Bay Aquarium has little wallet foldouts for which sushi to eat in restaurants to moderate damage to fish populations (and mercury intake). You might be able to get some sent to you in the mail.

I saw some great BPA free water bottles at Whole Foods not too long ago, and they were less than $5 each. It’s a shame that there’s not some “eco-friendlier” water bottles out there, because water is probably the most important thing in the bag next to Advil.

I love that you added teh Zagat guide! The only things I can think of are water and a welcome note.

In ours we are doing water, homemde cookies (my moms recipe, which she is known for), homemade chocolates, goldfish, maps, guides and a welcome note.

Those bags are so cute! I’d leave out the toothbrush cause I don’t think it falls in line with your “green” theme (why would you need a toothbrush that you can throw away after 1/a couple uses?)… those Zagats are a great score! Maybe I’d throw in a guide to the Ferry Building, since your guests are right across the street!

It may be nice to have an agenda of wedding events including location, time and if transportation is being provided where to meet and if not possibilities for public transport. I got one of these at a wedding and it was so helpful to keep the rehearsal dinner logistics in line since we were OOT but not in the wedding party and did not need to actually rehearse.

Maybe if you don’t want the plastic bottle you can get some reusable water bottles, if you buy in bulk you can usually get a good deal!

We got our bags at Old Navy, and they’re similar. I also noticed that Forever 21 had different ones for cheap, too.

I can see your concern with plastic to throw away. What are you going to do about people throwing the glass away afterward, if they don’t want to carry it back with them? Are you going to ask them to recycle it? I like the idea!

Parsing Nonsense

Have you thought about bottled water? I know it seems counterintuitive, what with the Green handbook and all, but bottled water is so expensive in hotels and a lot of people hate drinking from the tap.

Maybe you can do a customized label for the water bottles that admonishes your guests to recycle the bottles?

Quick question…how do OOT bags work? Is it one per couple or per person? Also, do kids get a bag or no? I’ve been meaning to get on these but haven’t actually thought through what I was going to put in or anything. Thanks for some of the great ideas!

Srsly. Run. I went to one Target on my drive home and grabbed all 13 bags I could find (the ones I got say “Green & Gorgeous” and “Love” with the recycling symbol for the “o”). I went to the other Target near my house and they didn’t have any. I called my mom in VA - they had one. I’m going to the other Target near work tomorrow.

I’ll check out the Old Navy and Forever 21 ones if I can’t get more of the same.

we’re doing an all-food welcome basket per apartment instead of per guest (renting condos for our overseas guests). yummmm.

Yay for Target! I got the purple ones that say Live Laugh Love and then the purple with brown stripe and handle. They are going to work out perfectly for my OOT I hope! Yours look great!

If your ceremony is outside or if you have some outside activities plan (or sightseeing) you could include a little travel size bottle of sunscreen!
