About Mrs. Bruschetta

Garter-ian Angel

May 13th, 2009 @ 10:55 am by Mrs. Bruschetta

We’re putting a spin on the traditional bouquet and garter toss, looking to infuse humor and whimsy into our reception, and to stimulate some playful competition among our guests. And, of course, I’m hoping for some great pictures to capture these fun moments.

How are we shaking things up? Well, I’m going to wait to reveal all the details in a future post. For now, though, I need some help from the hive. Since I lack the sew-how some of the other bees so clearly possess, I turned to Etsy seeking a seller to craft the toss and keepsake garters.

I was instantly drawn to Peterene’s simple, satin designs — but she’s got some crazy, colorful styles as well. If pearls and lace are more your thing, Peterene’s still your girl, with some vintage materials to complement romantically-styled gowns. (All images courtesy of Peterene Design)

Now, the decision. As I said above, my favorite is the first picture — the tuxedo garter set, a variation on Peterene’s tailored set. But I’d really love to work in one or more of our wedding colors: orange, purple, red and light green. Should I select one accent color for the toss garter, and pair it with white, ivory or black? Would you opt for a vibrant keepsake garter, or keep it simple with a more bridal-colored design? Share your ideas below!

Are you putting a twist on the bouquet and garter toss? Where did you (or will you) purchase your garters?

Don’t worry about seeming bridal with your garter! Have fun with it, it’s a garter, it’ll be bridey anyway. :)

Have a garter custom made on etsy. It costs the same and you can dictate the colors

I’m excited to see where you are going with this “spin” of yours!

Since our friends are notorious for ditching the bouquet and garter tosses, my husband and I added a twist- there was money attached to each, and it was open to everyone, not just the single folks.

I don’t know if I’ll do a garter at all…but if we do, I can guarantee it will be crazy awesome colors!

It so hard to pick btw #1 & #2!! I like the simplicity of #1, but I like that #2 has color.
I haven’t found my toss garter yet, but I’m going to wear the garter my gradma and then my mom wore :)

Oo I like the money idea! I’m scared my friends will all stand there as the bouquet is thrown, so I’m going to see if my florist can create like five smaller bouquets that will all come apart as I throw it… so five people get it and can’t avoid it.

The garter and bouquet toss is huge where I am from!! And its going to be fun for sure.

My fh is a huge Toronto Maple Leafs (hockey) fan, so I purchased the garter from etsy and its awesome!! Everyone will love it.

i got my garter from peterene! i was in love with her vintage silk and lace, so mine is a little more like that last one. but i say if you like color (and from your choices, it sounds like you do) go for vibrant! it lets everyone know that you are having fun with the tradition.

My keepsake is along the lines of a more traditional “bridal” garter. However, my toss is deep purple (my main color). My mom is making them both.

Can’t wait to hear your spin. I love the fun garter and bouquet toss photos, but most of our guests are married- so I’d love something to be able to include everyone!!

the only twist we’re doing for the garter and bouquet tosses is we’re including Best Buy and Victoria’s Secret gift cards! Who wouldn’t fight for that?! :)

One of my garters is my FI’s fave sports team!

Since NO ONE (not one person!) at our wedding will be single, we are making the bouquet/garter toss more of a lottery. Whoever wins will get a gift certficate (we haven’t figured out where to yet!). We thought this would make for a fun time AND good pictures!

LOVE the first garter! Something about the tuxedo detail is just super hot. I think I will have to visit that Etsy seller’s store…

I don’t think I’m doing a garter… I’m thinking of doing a bouquet break-apart at the end of the night and disassembling my (uncomplicatedly made, because I’ll be making it) bouquet and giving a flower or two to all the women there (made possibly by my very small wedding size).

I know the bouquet toss is so traditional but we are breaking tradition and I’m not throwing it. Instead I am going to present the bouquet to the couple who has been married the longest (which I know is my fiance’s maternal grandparents- the only living set of grandparents between the 2 of us so there will be no hard feelings either…). My fiance still wants to toss the garter but he is going to put it around his favorite team’s baseball and throw it to the guys!

I will probably go with reds and oranges for my garter. Might as well choose one with some pop!

I think the first one is so classy! What great finds! I am sure whatever you choose will be great, but I really like the black and white classic look and think it goes well with your theme. As I type this though, I realize it will be under your gorgeous dress most of the time so a more fun look would be the colorful one…hmm…now I see the challenge :)
